    Predicting Blast-Induced Ground Vibrations in Some Indian Tunnels: a Comparison of Decision Tree, Artificial Neural Network and Multivariate Regression Methods

    The present study compares three different techniques (decision tree, artificial neural network and multivariate regression analysis) for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations in some Indian tunnelling projects. The performance of these models was also compared to site-specific conventional predictor equations. A database consisting of 137 vibration records was randomly divided into training and testing sets for model generation. Eight input parameters (total charge, tunnel cross-section, maximum charge per delay, number of holes, hole diameter, distance from blasting face, hole depth and charge per hole) were selected for model development using bivariate correlation analysis. Results indicated that the decision tree is best suited for predicting vibrations. The decision tree further suggested that the intensity of near-field ground vibrations is mainly affected by total charge fired in a round, whereas the intensity of far-field vibrations is governed by maximum charge per delay and charge per hole. Conventional ground vibration predictors and machine learning techniques such as neural networks do not depict the relationship between input and output parameters. However, the present study substantiates that the decision tree can be a good tool for precise prediction of ground vibrations.     Implementation of Navigation Target Seeker Mobile Robot Based on Pattern Recognition with Fuzzy Kohonen Network (FKN) Methods

    Navigation is a technique for determining the position and direction of travel in the actual environment. This navigation system can be implemented on a mobile robot to accomplish a specific task, in this paper is used in order to navigate the robot can move toward a specific target while avoiding obstacles exist. One of the control techniques used in mobile robot navigation is based on pattern recognition techniques. With a pattern that has been previously implanted in the “brains” of the robot, the mobile robot can take action in accordance with the movement of the pattern. This paper used method of Fuzzy Kohonen Network (FKN) in order to be able to navigate a mobile robot to recognize patterns in the environment. The target used is a specific point designated position using a camera support (GPS Ad-hoc). Based on test results using this method, the obtained results are satisfactory, precisely to the targets and fast search time target

    Anti-malarial activities of Andrographis paniculata and Hedyotis corymbosa extracts and their combination with curcumin

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Herbal extracts of <it>Andrographis paniculata </it>(AP) and <it>Hedyotis corymbosa </it>(HC) are known as hepato-protective and fever-reducing drugs since ancient time and they have been used regularly by the people in the south Asian sub-continent. Methanolic extracts of these two plants were tested in vitro on choloroquine sensitive (MRC-pf-20) and resistant (MRC-pf-303) strains of <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>for their anti-malarial activity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Growth inhibition was determined using different concentrations of these plant extracts on synchronized <it>P. falciparum </it>cultures at the ring stage. The interactions between these two plant extracts and individually with curcumin were studied in vitro. The performance of these two herbal extracts in isolation and combination were further evaluated in vivo on Balb/c mice infected with <it>Plasmodium berghei </it>ANKA and their efficacy was compared with that of curcumin. The in vivo toxicity of the plant derived compounds as well as their parasite stage-specificity was studied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC<sub>50</sub>) of AP (7.2 μg/ml) was found better than HC (10.8 μg/ml). Combination of these two herbal drugs showed substantial enhancement in their anti-malarial activity. Combinatorial effect of each of these with curcumin also revealed anti-malarial effect. Additive interaction between the plant extracts (AP + HC) and their individual synergism with curcumin (AP+CUR, HC+CUR) were evident from this study. Increased in vivo potency was also observed with the combination of plant extracts over the individual extracts and curcumin. Both the plant extracts were found to inhibit the ring stage of the parasite and did not show any in vivo toxicity, whether used in isolation or in combination.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Both these two plant extracts in combination with curcumin could be an effective, alternative source of herbal anti-malarial drugs.</p

    Figure of eight suturing technique with fiber wire for patella fracture: a novel approach

    Modified tension band wiring (TBW) is the most commonly used technique for the management of patella fractures. However, all patella fractures are not-amenable to TBW. Tension band wiring, inter-fragmentary screw fixation, and the combination of cerclage wiring and screw fixation are used for internal fixation of these fractures. Surgical treatment is recommended for fractures that either disrupt the extensor mechanism or have greater than 2 to 3 mm of step-off and greater than 1 to 4 mm of displacement. In this series, we present ten cases managed with open reduction and internal fixation with figure of eight suturing technique using fiber wire. This series included ten patients with fractured patella and managed with open reduction and internal fixation with Tension band wiring with fiber wire. Patient demographics, fracture type, time to union, functional outcome, and complications were recorded. Patients were followed up for minimum of 6 months. All fractures went on to unite with average fracture healing time of 13.8 weeks. Mean Lysholm score and Bostman score were 85 and 27 respectively. Nine patients had excellent to good outcomes. One patient had poor outcome because of knee stiffness. Open reduction and internal fixation with figure of eight suturing technique using fiber wire are an efficient method for the management of severely comminuted and multi-fragmentary patella fractures with minimum complications

    Reversible Logic Circuit Synthesis

    Reversible or information-lossless circuits have applications in digital signal processing, communication, computer graphics and cryptography. They are also a fundamental requirement in the emerging field of quantum computation. We investigate the synthesis of reversible circuits that employ a minimum number of gates and contain no redundant input-output line-pairs (temporary storage channels). We prove constructively that every even permutation can be implemented without temporary storage using NOT, CNOT and TOFFOLI gates. We describe an algorithm for the synthesis of optimal circuits and study the reversible functions on three wires, reporting distributions of circuit sizes. We study circuit decompositions of reversible circuits where gates of the same type are next to each other. Finally, in an application important to quantum computing, we synthesize oracle circuits for Grover's search algorithm, and show a significant improvement over a previously proposed synthesis algorithm.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figs+tables.
