Connector systems for structures
A releasable coupling device for connecting two members to one another where a collet type fastener has normally retracted latching fingers insertable into a latching recess and a longitudinally movable expander for activating the fastener is described. The longitudinal movement is retained with a paraffin actuated system which can reset. The longitudinal movement of the expander in one direction is through a one way threaded ratchet system which provides an automatic locking action and the expander is movable in either direction by an independently operated threaded action
On the classical capacity of quantum Gaussian channels
The set of quantum Gaussian channels acting on one bosonic mode can be
classified according to the action of the group of Gaussian unitaries. We look
for bounds on the classical capacity for channels belonging to such a
classification. Lower bounds can be efficiently calculated by restricting to
Gaussian encodings, for which we provide analytical expressions.Comment: 10 pages, IOP style. v2: minor corrections, close to the published

Quantum state transfer in a q-deformed chain
We investigate the quantum state transfer in a chain of particles satisfying
q-deformed oscillators algebra. This general algebraic setting includes the
spin chain and the bosonic chain as limiting cases. We study conditions for
perfect state transfer depending on the number of sites and excitations on the
chain. They are formulated by means of irreducible representations of a quantum
algebra realized through Jordan-Schwinger maps. Playing with deformation
parameters, we can study the effects of nonlinear perturbations or interpolate
between the spin and bosonic chain.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Tuning morphology and magnetism in epitaxial L10-FePt films
In this work, well-ordered epitaxial FePt thin Âżlms have been grown by RF sputtering on two different substrates (MgO (100) and SrTiO3 (100)) and the effect of different lattice parameters between the substrate and FePt Âżlm on morphology and magnetic behavior has been considered. Growth conditions have been optimized to obtain different morphologies and magnetic behaviors
Robustness against parametric noise of non ideal holonomic gates
Holonomic gates for quantum computation are commonly considered to be robust
against certain kinds of parametric noise, the very motivation of this
robustness being the geometric character of the transformation achieved in the
adiabatic limit. On the other hand, the effects of decoherence are expected to
become more and more relevant when the adiabatic limit is approached. Starting
from the system described by Florio et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 022327 (2006)],
here we discuss the behavior of non ideal holonomic gates at finite operational
time, i.e., far before the adiabatic limit is reached. We have considered
several models of parametric noise and studied the robustness of finite time
gates. The obtained results suggest that the finite time gates present some
effects of cancellation of the perturbations introduced by the noise which
mimic the geometrical cancellation effect of standard holonomic gates.
Nevertheless, a careful analysis of the results leads to the conclusion that
these effects are related to a dynamical instead of geometrical feature.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, several changes made, accepted for publication on

Bell's inequalities in the tomographic representation
The tomographic approach to quantum mechanics is revisited as a direct tool
to investigate violation of Bell-like inequalities. Since quantum tomograms are
well defined probability distributions, the tomographic approach is emphasized
to be the most natural one to compare the predictions of classical and quantum
theory. Examples of inequalities for two qubits an two qutrits are considered
in the tomographic probability representation of spin states.Comment: 11 pages, comments and references adde
Review of Evidence For Environmental Causes of Uveal Coloboma
Uveal coloboma is a condition defined by missing ocular tissues and is a significant cause of childhood blindness. It occurs from a failure of the optic fissure to close during embryonic development and may lead to missing parts of the iris, ciliary body, retina, choroid, and optic nerve. Because there is no treatment for coloboma, efforts have focused on prevention. While several genetic causes of coloboma have been identified, little definitive research exists regarding the environmental causes of this condition. We review the current literature on environmental factors associated with coloboma in an effort to guide future research and preventative counseling related to this condition
Quantumness tests and witnesses in the tomographic-probability representation
In view of the tomographic-probability representation of quantum states, we
reconsider the approach to quantumness tests of a single system developed in
[Alicki and Van Ryn 2008 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41 062001]. For qubits we
introduce a general family of quantumness witnesses which are operators
depending on an extra parameter. Spin tomogram and dual spin tomographic
symbols are used to study qubit examples and the test inequalities which are
shown to satisfy simple relations within the framework of the standard
probability theory.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, LaTex file, submitted to Physica Script
Inverse spin-s portrait and representation of qudit states by single probability vectors
Using the tomographic probability representation of qudit states and the
inverse spin-portrait method, we suggest a bijective map of the qudit density
operator onto a single probability distribution. Within the framework of the
approach proposed, any quantum spin-j state is associated with the
(2j+1)(4j+1)-dimensional probability vector whose components are labeled by
spin projections and points on the sphere. Such a vector has a clear physical
meaning and can be relatively easily measured. Quantum states form a convex
subset of the 2j(4j+3) simplex, with the boundary being illustrated for qubits
(j=1/2) and qutrits (j=1). A relation to the (2j+1)^2- and
(2j+1)(2j+2)-dimensional probability vectors is established in terms of spin-s
portraits. We also address an auxiliary problem of the optimum reconstruction
of qudit states, where the optimality implies a minimum relative error of the
density matrix due to the errors in measured probabilities.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, PDF LaTeX, submitted to the Journal of Russian
