AdS_3 Partition Functions Reconstructed
For pure gravity in AdS_3, Witten has given a recipe for the construction of
holomorphically factorizable partition functions of pure gravity theories with
central charge c=24k. The partition function was found to be a polynomial in
the modular invariant j-function. We show that the partition function can be
obtained instead as a modular sum which has a more physical interpretation as a
sum over geometries. We express both the j-function and its derivative in terms
of such a sum.Comment: 9 page
Modular differential equations for characters of RCFT
We discuss methods, based on the theory of vector-valued modular forms, to
determine all modular differential equations satisfied by the conformal
characters of RCFT; these modular equations are related to the null vector
relations of the operator algebra. Besides describing effective algorithmic
procedures, we illustrate our methods on an explicit example.Comment: 13 page
Absence of bound states for waveguides in 2D periodic structures
We study a Helmholtz-type spectral problem in a two-dimensional medium
consisting of a fully periodic background structure and a perturbation in form
of a line defect. The defect is aligned along one of the coordinate axes,
periodic in that direction (with the same periodicity as the background), and
bounded in the other direction. This setting models a so-called "soft-wall"
waveguide problem. We show that there are no bound states, i.e., the spectrum
of the operator under study contains no point spectrum.Comment: This is an updated version of our paper (in slightly different form
in Journal of Mathematical Physics). An anonymous reviewer kindly made us
aware that ref. 10 is not applicable in our situation. An application of the
theorem in ref. 10 would have proved the absence of singular continuous
spectrum also. Our result on the absence of point spectrum is not affected by

Inelastic Neutron scattering in CeSi_{2-x}Ga_x ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compounds
Inelastic neutron scattering investigation on ferromagnetic Kondo lattice
compounds belonging to CeSi_{2-x}Ga_{x}, x = 0.7, 1.0 and 1.3, system is
reported. The thermal evolution of the quasielastic response shows that the
Kondo interactions dominate over the RKKY interactions with increase in Ga
concentration from 0.7 to 1.3. This is related to the increase in k-f
hybridization with increasing Ga concentration. The high energy response
indicates the ground state to be split by crystal field in all three compounds.
Using the experimental results we have calculated the crystal field parameters
in all three compounds studied here.Comment: 12 Pages Revtex, 2 eps figures
Discontinuous Molecular Dynamics for Semi-Flexible and Rigid Bodies
A general framework for performing event-driven simulations of systems with
semi-flexible or rigid bodies interacting under impulsive torques and forces is
outlined. Two different approaches are presented. In the first, the dynamics
and interaction rules are derived from Lagrangian mechanics in the presence of
constraints. This approach is most suitable when the body is composed of
relatively few point masses or is semi-flexible. In the second method, the
equations of rigid bodies are used to derive explicit analytical expressions
for the free evolution of arbitrary rigid molecules and to construct a simple
scheme for computing interaction rules. Efficient algorithms for the search for
the times of interaction events are designed in this context, and the handling
of missed interaction events is discussed.Comment: 16 pages, double column revte

Divergence of the Grueneisen Ratio at Quantum Critical Points in Heavy Fermion Metals
We present low-temperature volume thermal expansion, , and specific
heat, , measurements on high-quality single crystals of CeNi2Ge2 and
YbRh2(SiGe) which are located very near to quantum
critical points. For both systems, shows a more singular temperature
dependence than , and thus the Grueneisen ratio
diverges as T --> 0. For CeNi2Ge2, our results are in accordance with the
spin-density wave (SDW) scenario for three-dimensional critical
spin-fluctuations. By contrast, the observed singularity in
YbRh2_{0.95}_{0.05}_2$ cannot be explained by the itinerant SDW
theory but is qualitatively consistent with a locally quantum critical picture.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Intestinal parasitic infections in schoolchildren in different settings of Côte d'Ivoire : effect of diagnostic approach and implications for control
BACKGROUND: Social-ecological systems govern parasitic infections in humans. Within the frame of assessing the accuracy of a rapid diagnostic test for Schistosoma mansoni in Cote d'Ivoire, three different endemicity settings had to be identified and schoolchildren's intestinal parasitic infection profiles were characterized.
METHODS: In September 2010, a rapid screening was conducted in 11 schools in the Azaguie district, south Cote d'Ivoire. In each school, 25 children were examined for S. mansoni and S. haematobium. Based on predefined schistosome endemicity levels, three settings were selected, where schoolchildren aged 8-12 years were asked to provide three stool and three urine samples for an in-depth appraisal of parasitic infections. Triplicate Kato-Katz thick smears were prepared from each stool sample for S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminth diagnosis, whereas urine samples were subjected to a filtration method for S. haematobium diagnosis. Additionally, a formol-ether concentration method was employed on one stool sample for the diagnosis of helminths and intestinal protozoa. Multivariable logistic regression models were employed to analyse associations between schoolchildren's parasitic infections, age, sex and study setting.
RESULTS: The prevalences of S. mansoni and S. haematobium infections in the initial screening ranged from nil to 88% and from nil to 56%, respectively. The rapid screening in the three selected areas revealed prevalences of S. mansoni of 16%, 33% and 78%. Based on a more rigorous diagnostic approach, the respective prevalences increased to 92%, 53% and 33%. S. haematobium prevalences were 0.8%, 4% and 65%. Prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma spp., soil-transmitted helminths and intestinal protozoan infections showed setting-specific patterns. Infections with two or more species concurrently were most common in the rural setting (84%), followed by the peri-urban (28.3%) and urban setting (18.2%).
CONCLUSIONS: More sensitive diagnostic tools or rigorous sampling approaches are needed to select endemicity settings with high fidelity. The observed small-scale heterogeneity of helminths and intestinal protozoan infections has important implications for contro
Sensitivity and Specificity of Multiple Kato-Katz Thick Smears and a Circulating Cathodic Antigen Test for Schistosoma mansoni Diagnosis Pre- and Post-repeated-Praziquantel Treatment
Two Kato-Katz thick smears (Kato-Katzs) from a single stool are currently recommended for diagnosing Schistosoma mansoni infections to map areas for intervention. This ‘gold standard’ has low sensitivity at low infection intensities. The urine point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen test (POC-CCA) is potentially more sensitive but how accurately they detect S. mansoni after repeated praziquantel treatments, their suitability for measuring drug efficacy and their correlation with egg counts remain to be fully understood. We compared the accuracies of one to six Kato-Katzs and one POC-CCA for the diagnosis of S. mansoni in primary-school children who have received zero to ten praziquantel treatments. We determined the impact each diagnostic approach may have on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and drug-efficacy findings
A Holder Continuous Nowhere Improvable Function with Derivative Singular Distribution
We present a class of functions in which is variant
of the Knopp class of nowhere differentiable functions. We derive estimates
which establish \mathcal{K} \sub C^{0,\al}(\R) for 0<\al<1 but no is pointwise anywhere improvable to C^{0,\be} for any \be>\al.
In particular, all 's are nowhere differentiable with derivatives singular
distributions. furnishes explicit realizations of the functional
analytic result of Berezhnoi.
Recently, the author and simulteously others laid the foundations of
Vector-Valued Calculus of Variations in (Katzourakis), of
-Extremal Quasiconformal maps (Capogna and Raich, Katzourakis) and of
Optimal Lipschitz Extensions of maps (Sheffield and Smart). The "Euler-Lagrange
PDE" of Calculus of Variations in is the nonlinear nondivergence
form Aronsson PDE with as special case the -Laplacian.
Using , we construct singular solutions for these PDEs. In the
scalar case, we partially answered the open regularity problem of
Viscosity Solutions to Aronsson's PDE (Katzourakis). In the vector case, the
solutions can not be rigorously interpreted by existing PDE theories and
justify our new theory of Contact solutions for fully nonlinear systems

approaches both rely on the properties of .Comment: 5 figures, accepted to SeMA Journal (2012), to appea
