    Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of the growth of polymer crystals

    Based upon kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of crystallization in a simple polymer model we present a new picture of the mechanism by which the thickness of lamellar polymer crystals is constrained to a value close to the minimum thermodynamically stable thickness, l_{min}. The free energetic costs of the polymer extending beyond the edges of the previous crystalline layer and of a stem being shorter than l_{min} provide upper and lower constraints on the length of stems in a new layer. Their combined effect is to cause the crystal thickness to converge dynamically to a value close to l_{min} where growth with constant thickness then occurs. This description contrasts with those given by the two dominant theoretical approaches. However, at small supercoolings the rounding of the crystal profile does inhibit growth as suggested in Sadler and Gilmer's entropic barrier model.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, revte

    Direct, Non-Destructive Imaging of Magnetization in a Spin-1 Bose Gas

    Polarization-dependent phase-contrast imaging is used to spatially resolve the magnetization of an optically trapped ultracold gas. This probe is applied to Larmor precession of degenerate and nondegenerate spin-1 87^{87}Rb gases. Transverse magnetization of the Bose-Einstein condensate persists for the condensate lifetime, with a spatial response to magnetic field inhomogeneities consistent with a mean-field model of interactions. Rotational symmetry implies that the Larmor frequency of a spinor condensate be density-independent, and thus suitable for precise magnetometry with high spatial resolution. In comparison, the magnetization of the noncondensed gas decoheres rapidly.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Long-term sustainability of bio-components production

    Biofuels play an increasingly important role in motor fuel market. The list of biofuels (bio-components) in accordance with EU legislations contains a number of substances not widely used in the market. Traditionally these include: fatty acid methyl esters (FAME, in the Czech Republic methyl ether of rape seed oil) and bioethanol (also ethyl terc. buthyl ether ETBE, based on bioethanol). The availability and possible utilizations of bio-component fuels in Czech Republic and Serbia are discussed. Additional attention is paid on the identification of the possibilities to improve effectiveness of rape seeds cultivation and utilization of by-products from FAME production (utilization of sew, rape-meal and glycerol) which will allow fulfilment of the sustainability criteria for the first generation biofuels. The new approaches on renewable co-processing are commented. The concept of 3E (emissions, energy demand, and economics) is introduced specifying three main attributes for effective production of FAME production in accordance with legal compliances. Bio-components price change is analyzed in comparison to the price of motor fuels, identifying possible (speculative) crude price break-even point at the level of 149-176 USD/bbl at which point bio-fuels would become economically cost effective for the use by refiners

    Coupled rotor/fuselage dynamic analysis of the AH-1G helicopter and correlation with flight vibrations data

    Under a research program designated Design Analysis Methods for VIBrationS (DAMVIBS), existing analytical methods are used for calculating coupled rotor-fuselage vibrations of the AH-1G helicopter for correlation with flight test data from an AH-1G Operational Load Survey (OLS) test program. The analytical representation of the fuselage structure is based on a NASTRAN finite element model (FEM), which has been developed, extensively documented, and correlated with ground vibration test. One procedure that was used for predicting coupled rotor-fuselage vibrations using the advanced Rotorcraft Flight Simulation Program C81 and NASTRAN is summarized. Detailed descriptions of the analytical formulation of rotor dynamics equations, fuselage dynamic equations, coupling between the rotor and fuselage, and solutions to the total system of equations in C81 are included. Analytical predictions of hub shears for main rotor harmonics 2p, 4p, and 6p generated by C81 are used in conjunction with 2p OLS measured control loads and a 2p lateral tail rotor gearbox force, representing downwash impingement on the vertical fin, to excite the NASTRAN model. NASTRAN is then used to correlate with measured OLS flight test vibrations. Blade load comparisons predicted by C81 showed good agreement. In general, the fuselage vibration correlations show good agreement between anslysis and test in vibration response through 15 to 20 Hz

    International audienceThe patterns of variation in water quality for an acidic stream draining plantation forest overlying acidic and acid sensitive gley soils with shale and slate bedrock changed following the introduction of a 45 m deep borchole near to the stream. During drilling, air flushing of debris from the borehole cleared fracture routes for groundwater penetration to the stream via the stream bed. Consequently, there were and there remain marked increases in pH, alkalinity and calcium concentrations in the stream water. The extent of this water quality improvement varies according to flow. Under extreme highfiow conditions, most of the stream water is supplied from near surface soil water sources and acidic stream waters (pH about 4.2) result. Under baseflow conditions, the stream water pH is about 7.0 upstream and about 7.5 downstream of the borehole. Under intermediate flow conditions, the improvement in pH is most marked and values increase from around 5 to around 6.3. For acid sensitive "hard rock" areas such as those studied here, the bedrock has frequently been assumed to be both impermeable and low in base cations. This study illustrates that this view may be incorrect, and that groundwater may provide an important modifier of streamwater quality, at least for slate and shale dominated hard rock areas. Indeed, the work demonstrates clearly the potential for water quality remediation through groundwater manipulation
