Transmission of Araquio Music, Songs, and Movement Conventions: Learning, Experience, and Meaning in Devotional Theatre
Araquio, a verse play on the search of the holy cross, is an indigenous folk theatre in the town of Peñaranda, province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines that has survived for over a hundred years. This ethnographic-phenomenological study explores the holistic nature of the transmission and learning processes of araquio music and songs as a theatre-ritual. Its transmission as a social phenomenon is an avenue for music learning that may in fact overshadow its being a diminishing tradition. Using the framework of three modes of enculturation (Merriam, 1964) and interpretation of culture (Geertz, 1973), I investigate the music transmission and learning processes and sought to reveal how these processes were meaningful to the practitioners. Participants in this inquiry involve 21 adult practitioners, namely: 4 maestros (teachers of araquio), 3 female and 5 male personajes (characters of the verse play), and 9 musikeros (community musicians). An ethnographic method is employed using participant-observation and informal semi-structured interview script. Guiding questions have centered on how transmission and learning strategies, and meaning define these experiences. As a living oral tradition, intergenerational learning is found to be the product of transmission by enculturation occurring in the araquio and happens within genealogical generation. The practitioners, through the unspoken meaning of the tradition, have certain unspoken factors: unity of purpose, ancestral adhesion, unification of tribal strength, and shared experiences
On Languages Accepted by P/T Systems Composed of joins
Recently, some studies linked the computational power of abstract computing
systems based on multiset rewriting to models of Petri nets and the computation
power of these nets to their topology. In turn, the computational power of
these abstract computing devices can be understood by just looking at their
topology, that is, information flow.
Here we continue this line of research introducing J languages and proving
that they can be accepted by place/transition systems whose underlying net is
composed only of joins. Moreover, we investigate how J languages relate to
other families of formal languages. In particular, we show that every J
language can be accepted by a log n space-bounded non-deterministic Turing
machine with a one-way read-only input. We also show that every J language has
a semilinear Parikh map and that J languages and context-free languages (CFLs)
are incomparable
Cell bystander effect induced by radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and magnetic nanoparticles
Induced effects by direct exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) are a central
issue in many fields like radiation protection, clinic diagnosis and
oncological therapies. Direct irradiation at certain doses induce cell death,
but similar effects can also occur in cells no directly exposed to IR, a
mechanism known as bystander effect. Non-IR (radiofrequency waves) can induce
the death of cells loaded with MNPs in a focused oncological therapy known as
magnetic hyperthermia. Indirect mechanisms are also able to induce the death of
unloaded MNPs cells. Using in vitro cell models, we found that colocalization
of the MNPs at the lysosomes and the non-increase of the temperature induces
bystander effect under non-IR. Our results provide a landscape in which
bystander effects are a more general mechanism, up to now only observed and

Students’ Performance in the Indonesian National Examination and Career Choice among the First Year Students in Non-Religious Affiliated Universities
This research study investigated the role of the four components of the Indonesian National Examination to students’ career choice. Around 310 respondents participated in the study using their overall scores in the National Examination. Anchored in Holland’s (1997) RIASEC Theory, a quantitative method was employed to gather data using a research instrument tool. Analysis of data included descriptive statistics and Spearman’s product moment correlation using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20. Findings of the study revealed that there was significant difference in the national examination between high and low performing students and their career choice and there was a significant relationship between socio-demographic profile, four components of Indonesian National Examination and Indonesian students’ career choice. Results mostly suggest that students with high scores in the National examination tend to choose numeric courses in academics
High-gain nonlinear observer for simple genetic regulation process
High-gain nonlinear observers occur in the nonlinear automatic control theory
and are in standard usage in chemical engineering processes. We apply such a
type of analysis in the context of a very simple one-gene regulation circuit.
In general, an observer combines an analytical differential-equation-based
model with partial measurement of the system in order to estimate the
non-measured state variables. We use one of the simplest observers, that of
Gauthier et al., which is a copy of the original system plus a correction term
which is easy to calculate. For the illustration of this procedure, we employ a
biological model, recently adapted from Goodwin's old book by De Jong, in which
one plays with the dynamics of the concentrations of the messenger RNA coding
for a given protein, the protein itself, and a single metabolite. Using the

Constraints on the rare tau decays from mu --> e gamma in the supersymmetric see-saw model
It is now a firmly established fact that all family lepton numbers are
violated in Nature. In this paper we discuss the implications of this
observation for future searches for rare tau decays in the supersymmetric
see-saw model. Using the two loop renormalization group evolution of the soft
terms and the Yukawa couplings we show that there exists a lower bound on the
rate of the rare process mu --> e gamma of the form BR(mu --> e gamma) > C
BR(tau --> mu gamma) BR(tau --> e gamma), where C is a constant that depends on
supersymmetric parameters. Our only assumption is the absence of cancellations
among the high-energy see-saw parameters. We also discuss the implications of
this bound for future searches for rare tau decays. In particular, for large
regions of the mSUGRA parameter space, we show that present B-factories could
