Hydrogen environment embrittlement of astroloy and Udimet 700 (nickel-base) and V-57 (iron-base) superalloys

    Get PDF
The sensitivity to hydrogen environment embrittlement of three superalloys was determined. Astroloy forgings were resistant to embrittlement during smooth tensile, notched tensile, and creep testing in 3.5-MN/sq m hydrogen over the range 23 to 760 C. The notched tensile strength of Udimet 700 bar stock in hydrogen at 23 C was only 50 percent of the baseline value in helium. Forgings of V-57 were not significantly embrittled by hydrogen during smooth tensile testing over the range 23 to 675 C; creep and rupture lives of V-57 were degraded by hydrogen. Postcreep tensile ductility of V-57 was reduced by 40 percent after creep exposure in hydrogen

Subroutines GEORGE and DRASTC simplify operation of automatic digital plotter

    Get PDF
FORTRAN language subroutines enable the production of a tape for a 360-30 tape unit that controls the CALCOMP 566 Digital Incremental Plotter. This provides the plotter with instructions for graphically displaying data points with the proper scaling of axes, numbering, lettering, and tic marking

Boiler for generating high quality vapor

    Get PDF
Boiler supplies vapor for use in turbines by imparting a high angular velocity to the liquid annulus in heated rotating drum. Drum boiler provides a sharp interface between boiling liquid and vapor, thereby, inhibiting the formation of unwanted liquid droplets

Anisotropic valence-->core x-ray fluorescence from a [Rh(en)3][Mn(N)(CN)5]·H2O single crystal: Experimental results and density functional calculations

    Get PDF
High resolution x-ray fluorescence spectra have been recorded for emission in different directions from a single crystal of the compound [Rh(en)3][Mn(N)(CN)5]·H2O. The spectra are interpreted by comparison with density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations. The Kbeta[double-prime] line, which is strongly polarized along the Mn–N axis, can be viewed as an N(2s)-->Mn(1s) transition, and the angular dependence is understood within the dipole approximation. The so-called Kbeta2,5 region has numerous contributions but is dominated by Mn(4p) and C(2s)-->Mn(1s) transitions. Transition energy splittings are found in agreement with those of calculated occupied molecular orbitals to within 1 eV. Computed relative transition probabilities reproduce experimentally observed trends

Dipyridamole plus aspirin versus aspirin alone in the secondary prevention after TIA or stroke: a meta-analysis by risk

    Get PDF
Objectives: Our aim was to study the effect of combination therapy with aspirin and dipyridamole (A+D) over aspirin alone (ASA) in secondary prevention after transient ischemic attack or minor stroke of presumed arterial origin and to perform subgroup analyses to identify patients that might benefit most from secondary prevention with A+D. Data sources: The previously published meta-analysis of individual patient data was updated with data from ESPRIT (N=2,739); trials without data on the comparison of A+D versus ASA were excluded. Review methods: A meta-analysis was performed using Cox regression, including several subgroup analyses and following baseline risk stratification. Results: A total of 7,612 patients (5 trials) were included in the analyses, 3,800 allocated to A+D and 3,812 to ASA alone. The trial-adjusted hazard ratio for the composite event of vascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction and non-fatal stroke was 0.82 (95% confidence interval 0.72-0.92). Hazard ratios did not differ in subgroup analyses based on age, sex, qualifying event, hypertension, diabetes, previous stroke, ischemic heart disease, aspirin dose, type of vessel disease and dipyridamole formulation, nor across baseline risk strata as assessed with two different risk scores. A+D were also more effective than ASA alone in preventing recurrent stroke, HR 0.78 (95% CI 0.68 – 0.90). Conclusion: The combination of aspirin and dipyridamole is more effective than aspirin alone in patients with TIA or ischemic stroke of presumed arterial origin in the secondary prevention of stroke and other vascular events. This superiority was found in all subgroups and was independent of baseline risk. ---------------------------7dc3521430776 Content-Disposition: form-data; name="c14_creators_1_name_family" Halke

Structure and dielectric properties of polar fluids with extended dipoles: results from numerical simulations

The strengths and short-comings of the point-dipole model for polar fluids of spherical molecules are illustrated by considering the physically more relevant case of extended dipoles formed by two opposite charges ±q\pm q separated by a distance dd (dipole moment μ=qd\mu=q d). Extensive Molecular Dynamics simulations on a high density dipolar fluid are used to analyse the dependence of the pair structure, dielectric constant \eps and dynamics as a function of the ratio d/σd/\sigma (\sig is the molecular diameter), for a fixed dipole moment μ\mu. The point dipole model is found to agree well with the extended dipole model up to d/\sig \simeq 0.3. Beyond that ratio, \eps shows a non-trivial variation with d/\sig. When d/\sig>0.6, a transition is observed towards a hexagonal columnar phase; the corresponding value of the dipole moment, \mu^2/\sig^3 k T=3, is found to be substantially lower than the value of the point dipole required to drive a similar transition.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures; Paper submitted to Molecular Physic

When meat gets personal, animals' minds matter less:Motivated use of intelligence information in judgments of moral standing

    Get PDF
Why are many Westerners outraged by dog meat, but comfortable with pork? This is particularly puzzling, given strong evidence that both species are highly intelligent. We suggest that although people consider intelligence a key factor in determining animals’ moral status, they disregard this information when it is self-relevant. In Study 1, we show that intelligence plays a major role in the moral concern afforded to animals in the abstract. In Study 2, we manipulated the intelligence of three animals—pigs, tapirs, and a fictional animal—and find that only for pigs does this information not influence moral standing. Finally, in Study 3, we show that people believe that learning about pig intelligence will lead to high levels of moral concern, yet when they themselves learn about pig intelligence, moral concern remains low. These findings demonstrate an important, predictable inconsistency in how people think about minds and moral concern

Microscopic expressions for the thermodynamic temperature

We show that arbitrary phase space vector fields can be used to generate phase functions whose ensemble averages give the thermodynamic temperature. We describe conditions for the validity of these functions in periodic boundary systems and the Molecular Dynamics (MD) ensemble, and test them with a short-ranged potential MD simulation.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures, Revtex. Infrared Quasi Fixed Points and Mass Predictions in the MSSM II: Large tan(beta) Scenario

We consider the infrared quasi fixed point solutions of the renormalization group equations for the Yukawa couplings and soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in the MSSM in the \underline{large tanβ\tan\beta} regime. The existence of IR quasi fixed points together with the values of gauge couplings, third generation quarks, lepton and Z-boson masses allows one to predict masses of the Higgs bosons and SUSY particles as functions of the only free parameter, m1/2m_{1/2}, or the gluino mass. The lightest Higgs boson mass for MSUSY1M_{SUSY} \approx 1 TeV is found to be mh=128.20.47.1±5m_h=128.2-0.4-7.1 \pm 5 GeV for μ>0\mu>0 and mh=120.60.13.8±5m_h=120.6-0.1-3.8 \pm 5 GeV for μ<0\mu<0.Comment: 15 pages, LateX file with 4 eps figures, corrected numbers, new column in table, last versio
