    Evaluation of Analgesic Tolerance Induced by Metamizole in the Writhing Test Model

    La tolerancia analgésica se define como la necesidad de dosis crecientes para lograr el efecto deseado. En este artículo presentamos datos experimentales de la búsqueda de tolerancia analgésica inducida por metamizol en un modelo de dolor inducido por ácido acético al 0,9% conocido como prueba de constricción abdominal o prueba de Writhing. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar el desarrollo de tolerancia analgésica al metamizol en el modelo de prueba de Writhing. Experimental: se utilizaron grupos de ratones Balb/C 6±2. Se les administró metamizol en diferentes protocolos, posteriormente se les realizó un estímulo doloroso con ácido acético al 0,9% vía intraperitoneal, se evaluó durante 30 minutos y se contó tiempo de latencia, número de estiramientos abdominales para calificar la respuesta al dolor, posteriormente se les administró naloxona para buscar signos de abstinencia. Nuestros resultados demostraron que existe una tendencia a desarrollar tolerancia analgésica al metamizol después de su administración repetida.Analgesic tolerance is defined as the need for increasing doses to achieve the intended effect. In this paper we present experimental data from the search for analgesic tolerance induced by metamizole in a pain model induced by 0.9% acetic acid known as abdominal constriction test or Writhing test. The aim of this study was to identify the development of analgesic tolerance to metamizole in the Writhing test model. Experimental: groups of Balb/C mice 6±2 were used. They were administered metamizole in different protocols, and subsequently underwent a pain stimulus with 0.9% acetic acid via intraperitoneal, evaluated for 30 minutes and counting time of latency, number of abdominal stretches in order to rate pain response, subsequently naloxone was administered to look for signs of withdrawal. Our results demonstrated that there is a tendency to develop analgesic tolerance to metamizole after its repeated administration

    Analysis of a spatial Lotka-Volterra model with a finite range predator-prey interaction

    We perform an analysis of a recent spatial version of the classical Lotka-Volterra model, where a finite scale controls individuals' interaction. We study the behavior of the predator-prey dynamics in physical spaces higher than one, showing how spatial patterns can emerge for some values of the interaction range and of the diffusion parameter.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Human Mars Entry, Descent and Landing Architecture Study: Rigid Decelerators

    Several technology investments are required to develop Mars human scale Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) systems. Studies play the critical role of identifying the most feasible technical paths and high payoff investments. The goal of NASA's Entry, Descent and Landing Architecture Study is to inform those technology investments. In Phase 1 of the study, a point design for one lifting-body-like rigid decelerator vehicle, was developed. In Phase 2, a capsule concept was also considered to determine how it accommodated the human mission requirements. This paper summarizes the concept of operations for both rigid vehicles to deliver a 20-metric ton (t) payload to the surface of Mars. Details of the vehicle designs and flight performance are presented along with a packaging, mass sizing, and a launch vehicle fairing assessment. Finally, recommended technology investments based on the analysis of the rigid vehicles are provided

    Geostatistical analysis of soil properties in a secondary tropical dry forest, St. Lucia, West Indies

    Spatial variability of soil properties directly influences forest growth. However, spatial variation in soil properties has not been studied within tropical dry forests. As such, it is unclear whether soil properties, like moisture and N availability, display spatial variation at scales similar to that of other ecosystems. To gain insight into this variation, we established a 56 × 56 m sampling grid in tropical dry forest on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Samples collected at 4-m intervals were analyzed for forest floor mass, soil texture, pH, organic C, net N mineralization, net nitrification and available P. Geostatistical procedures were used to determine spatial autocorrelation of the aforementioned properties and processes. Semivariogram parameters were used in a block kriging procedure to produce spatial maps of soil properties. At the scale of our study, most soil properties exhibited spatial autocorrelation at distances of 24 m or less. Varying degrees of similarity were found between patterns of forest floor mass, organic C, net N mineralization, net nitrification and available P. No similarity was found between soil texture or pH and other properties. Fine-scale spatial patterns of net N mineralization and net nitrification are likely driven by overstory litter inputs, rather than variation in soil texture and water availability.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/43463/1/11104_2004_Article_BF00033939.pd

    A super-Earth and a sub-Neptune orbiting the bright, quiet M3 dwarf TOI-1266

    We report the discovery and characterisation of a super-Earth and a sub-Neptune transiting the bright (K=8.8K=8.8), quiet, and nearby (37 pc) M3V dwarf TOI-1266. We validate the planetary nature of TOI-1266 b and c using four sectors of TESS photometry and data from the newly-commissioned 1-m SAINT-EX telescope located in San Pedro M\'artir (Mexico). We also include additional ground-based follow-up photometry as well as high-resolution spectroscopy and high-angular imaging observations. The inner, larger planet has a radius of R=2.370.12+0.16R=2.37_{-0.12}^{+0.16} R_{\oplus} and an orbital period of 10.9 days. The outer, smaller planet has a radius of R=1.560.13+0.15R=1.56_{-0.13}^{+0.15} R_{\oplus} on an 18.8-day orbit. The data are found to be consistent with circular, co-planar and stable orbits that are weakly influenced by the 2:1 mean motion resonance. Our TTV analysis of the combined dataset enables model-independent constraints on the masses and eccentricities of the planets. We find planetary masses of MpM_\mathrm{p} = 13.59.0+11.013.5_{-9.0}^{+11.0} M\mathrm{M_{\oplus}} (<36.8<36.8 M\mathrm{M_{\oplus}} at 2-σ\sigma) for TOI-1266 b and 2.21.5+2.02.2_{-1.5}^{+2.0} M\mathrm{M_{\oplus}} (<5.7<5.7 M\mathrm{M_{\oplus}} at 2-σ\sigma) for TOI-1266 c. We find small but non-zero orbital eccentricities of 0.090.05+0.060.09_{-0.05}^{+0.06} (<0.21<0.21 at 2-σ\sigma) for TOI-1266 b and 0.04±0.030.04\pm0.03 (<0.10<0.10 at 2-σ\sigma) for TOI-1266 c. The equilibrium temperatures of both planets are of 413±20413\pm20 K and 344±16344\pm16 K, respectively, assuming a null Bond albedo and uniform heat redistribution from the day-side to the night-side hemisphere. The host brightness and negligible activity combined with the planetary system architecture and favourable planet-to-star radii ratios makes TOI-1266 an exquisite system for a detailed characterisation

    Perspectives on utilization of edible coatings and nano-laminate coatings for extension of postharvest storage of fruits and vegetables

    It is known that in developing countries, a large quantity of fruit and vegetable losses results at postharvest and processing stages due to poor or scarce storage technology and mishandling during harvest. The use of new and innovative technologies for reducing postharvest losses is a requirement that has not been fully covered. The use of edible coatings (mainly based on biopolymers) as a postharvest technique for agricultural commodities has offered biodegradable alternatives in order to solve problems (e.g., microbiological growth) during produce storage. However, biopolymer-based coatings can present some disadvantages such as: poor mechanical properties (e.g., lipids) or poor water vapor barrier properties (e.g., polysaccharides), thus requiring the development of new alternatives to solve these drawbacks. Recently, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising tool in the food processing industry, providing new insights about postharvest technologies on produce storage. Nanotechnological approaches can contribute through the design of functional packing materials with lower amounts of bioactive ingredients, better gas and mechanical properties and with reduced impact on the sensorial qualities of the fruits and vegetables. This work reviews some of the main factors involved in postharvest losses and new technologies for extension of postharvest storage of fruits and vegetables, focused on perspective uses of edible coatings and nano-laminate coatings.María L.
