Modeling of the electromagnetic field of the optical frequency in periodic structures composed of parallel conducting nanorods as well as composite spherical nanoparticles with an excitonogenic envelope in hexagonal 2d-lattices - in the quasistatic approximation and the FDTD method. The qualitative agreement of these approaches is shown when calculating field characteristics in lattices of cylindrical elements

Impurities, Quantum Interference and Quantum Phase Transitions in s-wave superconductors

We study the effects of quantum interference in impurity structures consisting of two or three magnetic impurities that are located on the surface of an s-wave superconductor. By using a self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism, we show that quantum interference leads to characteristic signatures not only in the local density of states (LDOS), but also in the spatial form of the superconducting order parameter. We demonstrate that the signatures of quantum interference in the LDOS are qualitatively, and to a large extent quantitatively unaffected by the suppression of the superconducting order parameter near impurities, which illustrates the robustness of quantum interference phenomena. Moreover, we show that by changing the interimpurity distance, or the impurities' scattering strength, the s-wave superconductor can be tuned through a series of first order quantum phase transitions in which the spin polarization of its ground state changes. In contrast to the single impurity case, this transition is not necessarily accompanied by a π\pi-phase shift of the order parameter, and can in certain cases even lead to its enhancement. Our results demonstrate that the superconductor's LDOS, its spin state, and the spatial form of the superconducting order parameter are determined by a subtle interplay between the relative positions of the impurities and their scattering strength

A convenient approach to the design and synthesis of indolo[3,2-c]coumarins via the microwave-assisted Cadogan reaction

3-(4,5-Dimethoxy-2-nitrophenyl)coumarins bearing various substituents on the benzene ring of the coumarin system have been prepared from salicylaldehydes and 2-(4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile by means of the Perkin condensation. Further cyclization of these 3-aryl coumarins through the microwave-assisted Cadogan reaction afforded the corresponding indolo[3,2-c]coumarins in good to excellent yields. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Stable σh-adducts in the reactions of the acridinium cation with heterocyclic N-nucleophiles

A reaction of NH-heterocycles with the 10-methylacridinium cation in the presence of a base led to 9,10-dihydro-10-methyl-9-substituted acridines, which can be considered as stable intermediates in the aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of hydrogen. The structure of the intermediates was studied and their oxidation potentials were determined. Generally, the oxidation potential was found to symbatically change with the changes in the energy of HOMO. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York

Extended Impurity Potential in a d_{x^2-y^2} Superconductor

We investigate the role of a finite potential range of a nonmagnetic impurity for the local density of states in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. Impurity induced subgap resonances are modified by the appearance of further scattering channels beyond the ss--wave scattering limit. The structure of the local density of states (DOS) in the vicinity of the impurity is significantly enhanced and therefore improves the possibility for observing the characteristic anisotropic spatial modulation of the local DOS in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor by scanning tunneling microscopy.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, with 4 embedded eps figures. Aza-Diels-Alder reaction between 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazines and 1-morpholinocyclohexene followed by aromatization of the cyclohexene moiety affords 1-(2-pyridyl)isoquinolines. Crystal structures of two tetrahydroisoquinolines were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. © 2013 Mendeleev Communications. All rights reserved

Mirror-symmetry protected non-TRIM surface state in the weak topological insulator Bi2TeI

Strong topological insulators (TIs) support topological surfaces states on any crystal surface. In contrast, a weak, time-reversal-symmetry-driven TI with at least one non-zero v1, v2, v3 ℤ2 index should host spin-locked topological surface states on the surfaces that are not parallel to the crystal plane with Miller indices (v1 v2 v3). On the other hand, mirror symmetry can protect an even number of topological states on the surfaces that are perpendicular to a mirror plane. Various symmetries in a bulk material with a band inversion can independently preordain distinct crystal planes for realization of topological states. Here we demonstrate the first instance of coexistence of both phenomena in the weak 3D TI Bi2TeI which (v1 v2 v3) surface hosts a gapless spin-split surface state protected by the crystal mirror-symmetry. The observed topological state has an even number of crossing points in the directions of the 2D Brillouin zone due to a non-TRIM bulk-band inversion. Our findings shed light on hitherto uncharted features of the electronic structure of weak topological insulators and open up new vistas for applications of these materials in spintronics

Local Electronic Structure of a Single Magnetic Impurity in a Superconductor

The electronic structure near a single classical magnetic impurity in a superconductor is determined using a fully self-consistent Koster-Slater algorithm. Localized excited states are found within the energy gap which are half electron and half hole. Within a jellium model we find the new result that the spatial structure of the positive-frequency (electron-like) spectral weight (or local density of states), can differ strongly from that of the negative frequency (hole-like) spectral weight. The effect of the impurity on the continuum states above the energy gap is calculated with good spectral resolution for the first time. This is also the first three-dimensional self-consistent calculation for a strong magnetic impurity potential.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, change in heuristic picture, no change in numerical result
