Galaxy Clusters in the Line of Sight to Background Quasars: I. Survey Design and Incidence of MgII Absorbers at Cluster Redshifts
We describe the first optical survey of absorption systems associated with
galaxy clusters at z= 0.3-0.9. We have cross-correlated SDSS DR3 quasars with
high-redshift cluster/group candidates from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey. We
have found 442 quasar-cluster pairs for which the MgII doublet might be
detected at a transverse (physical) distance d<2 Mpc from the cluster centers.
To investigate the incidence (dN/dz) and equivalent-width distribution n(W) of
MgII systems at cluster redshifts, two statistical samples were drawn out of
these pairs: one made of high-resolution spectroscopic quasar observations (46
pairs), and one made of quasars used in MgII searches found in the literature
(375 pairs). The results are: (1) the population of strong MgII systems
(W_0>2.0 Ang.) near cluster redshifts shows a significant (>3 sigma)
overabundance (up to a factor of 15) when compared with the 'field' population;
(2) the overabundance is more evident at smaller distances (d<1 Mpc) than
larger distances (d<2 Mpc) from the cluster center; and, (3) the population of
weak MgII systems (W_0<0.3 Ang.) near cluster redshifts conform to the field
statistics. Unlike in the field, this dichotomy makes n(W) in clusters appear
flat and well fitted by a power-law in the entire W-range. A sub-sample of the
most massive clusters yields a stronger and still significant signal. Since
either the absorber number density or filling-factor/cross-section affects the
absorber statistics, an interesting possibility is that we have detected the
signature of truncated halos due to environmental effects. Thus, we argue that
the excess of strong systems is due to a population of absorbers in an
overdense galaxy environment, and the lack of weak systems to a different

Between market, state and society: Labour codes of conduct in the southern African garment industry
This paper compares the way garment factory workers in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho
experience the interaction between mechanisms for inspecting labour codes of conduct and government
functions and trade unions. In South Africa and Swaziland there was little awareness
of the potential impact of such instruments on working conditions. In Lesotho, where there is a
high profile campaign, workers are more aware of the codes, but confusion over who visitors to
factories are, and corporate whitewash, limit the impact of instruments. In all three countries
workers perceived the impact of codes of conduct on labour rights as negligible. This differed
between firms, with workers in firms supplying to the higher end of the South African market
being more positive. Given the absence of coherent global governance of trade in the garment
industry, codes of conduct will remain an inadequate response to the abuse of workers’ rights,

Cosmic Evolution of a Sample of Infrared Luminous Galaxies
A sample of faint, southern-hemisphere 60 μm sources
(f_(60) > 100mJy) detected as part of the IRAS Additional Observations has been used, in conjunction with CCD imaging, to produce a list of faint infrared galaxies. Redshifts of this sample of galaxies can be compared
with model predictions for several evolutionary scenarios; the comparisons show an excess of galaxies at higher redshifts (z > 0.1) compared with the predictions of models which assume no evolution of the infrared-galaxy luminosity function
Stress relaxation in epithelial monolayers is controlled by the actomyosin cortex
Epithelial monolayers are one-cell thick tissue sheets that separate internal and external environments. As part of their function, they have to withstand extrinsic mechanical stresses applied at high strain rates. However, little is known about how monolayers respond to mechanical deformations. Here, by subjecting suspended epithelial monolayers to stretch, we find that they dissipate stresses on a minute time-scale in a process that involves an increase in monolayer length, pointing to active remodelling of cell architecture during relaxation. Strikingly, monolayers consisting of tens of thousands of cells relax stress with similar dynamics to single rounded cells and both respond similarly to perturbations of actomyosin. By contrast, cell-cell junctional complexes and intermediate filaments do not relax tissue stress, but form stable connections between cells, allowing monolayers to behave rheologically as single cells. Taken together our data show that actomyosin dynamics governs the rheological properties of epithelial monolayers, dissipating applied stresses, and enabling changes in monolayer length.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
The importance of major mergers in the build up of stellar mass in brightest cluster galaxies at z=1
Recent independent results from numerical simulations and observations have
shown that brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) have increased their stellar mass
by a factor of almost two between z~0.9 and z~0.2. The numerical simulations
further suggest that more than half this mass is accreted through major
mergers. Using a sample of 18 distant galaxy clusters with over 600
spectroscopically confirmed cluster members between them, we search for
observational evidence that major mergers do play a significant role. We find a
major merger rate of 0.38 +/- 0.14 mergers per Gyr at z~1. While the
uncertainties, which stem from the small size of our sample, are relatively
large, our rate is consistent with the results that are derived from numerical
simulations. If we assume that this rate continues to the present day and that
half of the mass of the companion is accreted onto the BCG during these
mergers, then we find that this rate can explain the growth in the stellar mass
of the BCGs that is observed and predicted by simulations. Major mergers
therefore appear to be playing an important role, perhaps even the dominant

Is the Shroud of Turin in Relation to the Old Jerusalem Historical Earthquake?
Phillips and Hedges suggested, in the scientific magazine Nature (1989), that
neutron radiation could be liable of a wrong radiocarbon dating, while proton
radiation could be responsible of the Shroud body image formation. On the other
hand, no plausible physical reason has been proposed so far to explain the
radiation source origin, and its effects on the linen fibres. However, some
recent studies, carried out by the first author and his Team at the Laboratory
of Fracture Mechanics of the Politecnico di Torino, found that it is possible
to generate neutron emissions from very brittle rock specimens in compression
through piezonuclear fission reactions. Analogously, neutron flux increments,
in correspondence to seismic activity, should be a result of the same
reactions. A group of Russian scientists measured a neutron flux exceeding the
background level by three orders of magnitude in correspondence to rather
appreciable earthquakes (4th degree in Richter Scale). The authors consider the
possibility that neutron emissions by earthquakes could have induced the image
formation on Shroud linen fibres, trough thermal neutron capture by Nitrogen
nuclei, and provided a wrong radiocarbon dating due to an increment in
C(14,6)content. Let us consider that, although the calculated integral flux of
10^13 neutrons per square centimetre is 10 times greater than the cancer
therapy dose, nevertheless it is100 times smaller than the lethal dose.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur
