Intellectual Growth For Undergraduate Students: Evaluation Results From An Undergraduate Research Conference
We describe the development and evaluation of the university-wide, weeklong undergraduate research conference at the University of New Hampshire. Despite increases nationally in the number of undergraduate research conferences (URC), there has been little research examining the social and educational impact of these events on student presenters. We describe the development and evaluation of the university-wide, weeklong URC at the University of New Hampshire. A survey administered to URC participants over a four year period revealed that research culminating in a presentation at the URC was one of the more influential events students experienced during their undergraduate years and students realized a high level of satisfaction from presenting at the URC
Depletion of carriers and negative differential conductivity in an intrinsic graphene under a dc electric field
The heating of carriers in an intrinsic graphene under an abrupt switching
off a dc electric field is examined taking into account both the energy
relaxation via acoustic and optic phonons and the interband
generation-recombination processes. The later are caused by the interband
transitions due to optical phonon modes and thermal radiation. Description of
the temporal and steady-state responses, including the nonequilibrium
concentration and energy as well as the current-voltage characteristics, is
performed. At room temperature, a nearly-linear current-voltage characteristic
and a slowly-varied concentration take place for fields up to -- 20 kV/cm.
Since a predominant recombination of high-energy carriers due to optical phonon
emission at low temperatures, a depletion of concentration takes place below --
250 K. For lower temperatures the current tends to be saturated and a negative
differential conductivity appears below -- 170 K in the region of fields -- 10

Digital flight control research
The results of studies which were undertaken to contribute to the design of digital flight control systems, particularly for transport aircraft are presented. In addition to the overall design considerations for a digital flight control system, the following topics are discussed in detail: (1) aircraft attitude reference system design, (2) the digital computer configuration, (3) the design of a typical digital autopilot for transport aircraft, and (4) a hybrid flight simulator
The Allergy Clinic: 50 years
There has been an allergy clinic at Red Cross Children’s Hospital from the day that the doors opened 50 years ago. This may not appear surprising given the prevalence of allergic conditions in children, but even today few major teaching hospitals in South Africa have paediatric allergy clinics – this despite the recent International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) which ranked South Africa twelfth in prevalence out of the 56 countries surveyed

The Intersections of Race, Gender, Age, and Socioeconomic Status: Implications for Reporting Discrimination and Attributions to Discrimination.
This study employed an intersectional approach (operationalized as the combination of more than one social identity) to examine the relationship between aspects of social identity (i.e., race, gender, age, SES), self-reported level of mistreatment, and attributions for discrimination. Self-reported discrimination has been researched extensively and there is substantial evidence of its association with adverse physical and psychological health outcomes. Few studies, however, have examined the relationship of multiple demographic variables (including social identities) to overall levels self-reported mistreatment as well the selection of attributions for discrimination. A diverse community sample (N = 292; 42.12% Black; 47.26% male) reported on experiences of discrimination using the Everyday Discrimination Scale. General linear models were used to test the effect of sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., race, gender, age, SES) on total discrimination score and on attributions for discrimination. To test for intersectional relationships, we tested the effect of two-way interactions of sociodemographic characteristics on total discrimination score and attributions for discrimination. We found preliminary support for intersectional effects, as indicated by a significant race by age interaction on the selection of the race attribution for discrimination; gender by SES on the age attribution; age by gender on the education attribution; and race by SES on the economic situation attribution. Our study extends prior work by highlighting the importance of testing more than one factor as contributing to discrimination, particularly when examining to what sources individuals attribute discrimination
Thermal-radiation-induced nonequilibrium carriers in an intrinsic graphene
We examine an intrinsic graphene connected to the phonon thermostat at
temperature T under irradiation of thermal photons with temperature T_r, other
than T. The distribution of nonequilibrium electron-hole pairs was obtained for
the cases of low and high concentration of carriers. For the case when the
interparticle scattering is unessential, the distribution function is
determined by the interplay of intraband relaxation of energy due to acoustic
phonons and interband radiative transitions caused by the thermal radiation.
When the Coulomb scattering dominates, then the quasi-equilibrium distribution
with effective temperature and non-equilibrium concentration, determined
through balance equations, is realized. Due to the effect of thermal radiation
with temperature concentration and conductivity of carriers in
graphene modify essentially. It is demonstrated, that at the negative
interband absorption, caused by the inversion of carriers distribution, can
occur, i.e. graphene can be unstable under thermal irradiation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Transient response under ultrafast interband excitation of an intrinsic graphene
The transient evolution of carriers in an intrinsic graphene under ultrafast
excitation, which is caused by the collisionless interband transitions, is
studied theoretically. The energy relaxation due to the quasielastic acoustic
phonon scattering and the interband generation-recombination transitions due to
thermal radiation are analyzed. The distributions of carriers are obtained for
the limiting cases when carrier-carrier scattering is negligible and when the
intercarrier scattering imposes the quasiequilibrium distribution. The
transient optical response (differential reflectivity and transmissivity) on a
probe radiation and transient photoconductivity (response on a weak dc field)
appears to be strongly dependent on the relaxation and recombination dynamics

Imaging faint brown dwarf companions close to bright stars with a small, well-corrected telescope aperture
We have used our 1.6 m diameter off-axis well-corrected sub-aperture (WCS) on
the Palomar Hale telescope in concert with a small inner-working-angle (IWA)
phase-mask coronagraph to image the immediate environs of a small number of
nearby stars. Test cases included three stars (HD 130948, HD 49197 and HR7672)
with known brown dwarf companions at small separations, all of which were
detected. We also present the initial detection of a new object close to the
nearby young G0V star HD171488. Follow up observations are needed to determine
if this object is a bona fide companion, but its flux is consistent with the
flux of a young brown dwarf or low mass M star at the same distance as the
primary. Interestingly, at small angles our WCS coronagraph demonstrates a
limiting detectable contrast comparable to that of extant Lyot coronagraphs on
much larger telescopes corrected with current-generation AO systems. This
suggests that small apertures corrected to extreme adaptive optics (ExAO)
levels can be used to carry out initial surveys for close brown dwarf and
stellar companions, leaving followup observations for larger telescopes.Comment: accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Rabi oscillations under ultrafast excitation of graphene
We study coherent nonlinear dynamics of carriers under ultrafast interband
excitation of an intrinsic graphene. The Rabi oscillations of response appear
with increasing of pumping intensity. The photoexcited distribution is
calculated versus time and energy taking into account the effects of energy
relaxation and dephasing. Spectral and temporal dependencies of the response on
a probe radiation (transmission and reflection coefficients) are considered for
different pumping intensities and the Rabi oscillations versus time and

Random Matrix Theory Analysis of Cross Correlations in Financial Markets
We confirm universal behaviors such as eigenvalue distribution and spacings
predicted by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) for the cross correlation matrix of the
daily stock prices of Tokyo Stock Exchange from 1993 to 2001, which have been
reported for New York Stock Exchange in previous studies. It is shown that the
random part of the eigenvalue distribution of the cross correlation matrix is
stable even when deterministic correlations are present. Some deviations in the
small eigenvalue statistics outside the bounds of the universality class of RMT
are not completely explained with the deterministic correlations as proposed in
previous studies. We study the effect of randomness on deterministic
correlations and find that randomness causes a repulsion between deterministic
eigenvalues and the random eigenvalues. This is interpreted as a reminiscent of
``level repulsion'' in RMT and explains some deviations from the previous
studies observed in the market data. We also study correlated groups of issues
in these markets and propose a refined method to identify correlated groups
based on RMT. Some characteristic differences between properties of Tokyo Stock
