The Danger to Confidential Communications in the Mismatch Between the Fourth Amendment\u27s Reasonable Expectation of Privacy and the Confidentiality of Evidentiary Privileges
In May 2009, a bare majority of the Supreme Court of North Carolina decided State v. Rollins, making a serious mistake in privilege law that if applied generally will undermine the valued protections of evidentiary privileges. Ordinarily, few might criticize a ruling admitting statements like those made by the defendant, Mickey Rollins, who indicated his guilt for a homicide. However, Rollins\u27 statements were made to his wife, and under established precedent, those conversations should have been ruled a privileged marital communication

CeCoIn5 - a quantum critical superfluid
We have made the first complete measurements of the London penetration depth
of CeCoIn5, a quantum-critical metal where superconductivity
arises from a non-Fermi-liquid normal state. Using a novel tunnel diode
oscillator designed to avoid spurious contributions to , we have
established the existence of intrinsic and anomalous power-law behaviour at low
temperature. A systematic analysis raises the possibility that the unusual
observations are due to an extension of quantum criticality into the
superconducting state.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Superfluid Density in a Highly Underdoped YBCO Superconductor
The superfluid density rho_s(T) = 1/lambda^2(T) has been measured at 2.64 GHz
in highly underdoped YBCO, at 37 dopings with T_c between 3 K and 17 K. Within
limits set by the transition width Delta T_c ~ 0.4 K, rho_s(T) shows no
evidence of critical fluctuations as T goes to T_c, with a mean-field-like
transition and no indication of vortex unbinding. Instead, we propose that
rho_s displays the behaviour expected for a quantum phase transition in the (3
+ 1)-dimensional XY universality class, with rho_s0 ~ (p - p_c), T_c ~ (p -
p_c)^1/2 and rho_s(T) ~ (T_c - T)^1 as T goes to T_c.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; final version of pape
Effects of cytokinins on secondary somatic embryogenesis of selected clone Rayong 9 of Manihot esculenta Crantz for ethanol production
In 2005, the Rayong-FCRC released a new high-yielding cassava cultivar designated Rayong 9 (R9) for ethanol production. However, the rate of distribution to farmers has been limited by the traditional vegetative propagation method of this crop which does not always satisfy the needs in planting material. The objective was to improve secondary somatic embryogenesis of the cassava clone Rayong 9 (R9) selected in Thailand by the Rayong Field Crops Research Center (Rayong-FCRC) for its suitability to produce ethanol. Fragments of cotyledon-stage somatic embryos were subcultured onto MS medium supplemented with the auxin 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) at 4 mg/l in sight of inducing secondary somatic embryogenesis. Five different cytokinins, 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), kinetin, zeatin, isopentenyladenine (2-iP) and adenine were added at 1 mg/l to the induction and maturation media to test their efficiency. Onto cytokinin-free media, 70 to 80% of explants produced embryoids, each explant giving 2 to 4 new embryoids within 7 weeks. The conversion rate of the embryoids into plantlets ranged from 11 to 26% depending on the type of cytokinin. With the exception of adenine, the other cytokinins inhibited the intensity of somatic embryogenesis, by 75% in the case of zeatin and 30% in the case of kinetin. Addition of adenine did not significantly improve the number of embryoids per explant. However, at 10, 20 and 40 mg/l adenine tended to improve the process relatively to embryoid sizes and plantlet survival rates in the greenhouse.Key words: Adenine, biofuel, cassava, cotyledonary-stage, embryoids, icrocuttings, micropropagation
Survival of the d-wave superconducting state near the edge of antiferromagnetism in the cuprate phase diagram
In the cuprate superconductor , hole doping in the
layers is controlled by both oxygen content and the degree of oxygen-ordering.
At the composition , the ordering can occur at room
temperature, thereby tuning the hole doping so that the superconducting
critical temperature gradually rises from zero to 20 K. Here we exploit this to
study the c-axis penetration depth as a function of temperature and doping. The
temperature dependence shows the d-wave superconductor surviving to very low
doping, with no sign of another ordered phase interfering with the nodal
quasiparticles. The only apparent doping dependence is a smooth decline of
superfluid density as Tc decreases.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
