Parametric search and optimisation of fast displacement hull forms using rans simulations of full-scale flow

    Get PDF
Abstract. A methodology to derive parametric hull design candidates with a specified displacement and initial stability is introduced. A gradient-free search and optimisation algorithm coupled to a RANS CFD solver is then used to identify efficient pure-displacement hull shapes with minimal hydrodynamic resistance operating in the transition speed region without relying on dynamic lift

COVID-19 and the cross-section of equity returns: impact and transmission

    Get PDF
Using the first reported case of COVID-19 in a given U.S. county as the event day, we find that firms headquartered in an affected county experience, on average, a 27-bps lower return in the 10-day post-event window. This negative effect nearly doubles in magnitude for firms in counties with a higher infection rate (−50 bps). We test a number of transmission channels. Firms belonging to labor-intensive industries and those located in counties with a large mobility decline have worse stock performance. Firms sensitive to COVID-19-induced uncertainty also exhibit more negative returns. Finally, more negative stock returns are associated with downward revisions in earnings forecasts

Rainbow domination and related problems on some classes of perfect graphs

Let kNk \in \mathbb{N} and let GG be a graph. A function f:V(G)2[k]f: V(G) \rightarrow 2^{[k]} is a rainbow function if, for every vertex xx with f(x)=f(x)=\emptyset, f(N(x))=[k]f(N(x)) =[k]. The rainbow domination number γkr(G)\gamma_{kr}(G) is the minimum of xV(G)f(x)\sum_{x \in V(G)} |f(x)| over all rainbow functions. We investigate the rainbow domination problem for some classes of perfect graphs

The first Hochschild cohomology group of a schurian cluster-tilted algebra

Given a cluster-tilted algebra B we study its first Hochschild cohomology group HH1(B) with coefficients in the B-B-bimodule B. We find several consequences when B is representation-finite, and also in the case where B is cluster-tilted of type Ã.Fil: Assem, Ibrahim. University of Sherbrooke; CanadáFil: Redondo, Maria Julia. Inhibition and Redistribution of NHE3, the Apical Na+/H+ Exchanger, by Clostridium difficile Toxin B

NHE3, the apical isoform of the Na+/H+ exchanger, is central to the absorption of salt and water across the intestinal epithelium. We report that treatment of epithelial cells with toxin B of Clostridium difficile, a diarrheal pathogen, causes a pronounced inhibition of NHE3 activity, with little effect on the basolateral NHE1 isoform. Depression of NHE3 activity is accompanied by the translocation of apical exchangers to a subapical endomembrane compartment. Treatment of cells with toxin B increased the fraction of exchangers that were solubilized by nonionic detergents and induced dephosphorylation and extensive redistribution of ezrin. The Rho-kinase inhibitor, Y-27632, also altered the distribution and activity of NHE3. We suggest that inactivation of Rho-family GTPases by clostridial toxin B alters the interaction between NHE3 and the microvillar cytoskeleton, possibly by impairing the ability of ezrin to bridge the exchangers to filamentous actin. Detachment of NHE3 from the actin skeleton would facilitate its internalization, resulting in net disappearance from the apical surface. The consequent inhibition of transport is likely to contribute to the diarrheal effects of C. difficile

    Cycle-finite module categories

    Get PDF
We describe the structure of module categories of finite dimensional algebras over an algebraically closed field for which the cycles of nonzero nonisomorphisms between indecomposable finite dimensional modules are finite (do not belong to the infinite Jacobson radical of the module category). Moreover, geometric and homological properties of these module categories are exhibited

The achievement gap: The impact of between‐class attainment grouping on pupil attainment and educational equity over time

    Get PDF
Despite extensive research on attainment grouping, the impact of attainment grouping on pupil attainment remains poorly understood and contested. This paper presents evidence from a study conducted with 2944 12–13 year olds, from 76 schools in England, who were allocated to between-class attainment groups (‘setting’) in English and mathematics over the first 2 years of secondary schooling. After controlling for prior attainment, pupils in the top set performed significantly better than pupils in the middle and bottom sets in both English and mathematics. The findings indicate a widening gap in attainment, especially in the case of English. Findings, especially in the case of mathematics, provide more evidence of a relative benefit for pupils placed in top sets than a relative detriment for those in bottom sets.Education Endowment Foundation (EEF
