    High efficiency compound semiconductor concentrator photovoltaics

    Special emphasis was given to the high yield pilot production of packaged AlGaAs/GaAs concentrator solar cells, using organometallic VPE for materials growth, the demonstration of a concentrator module using 12 of these cells which achieved 16.4 percent conversion efficiency at 50 C coolant inlet temperature, and the demonstration of a spectral splitting converter module that achieved in excess of 20 percent efficiency. This converter employed ten silicon and ten AlGaAs cells with a dichroic filter functioning as the beam splitter. A monolithic array of AlGaAs/GaAs solar cells is described

    Organometallic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (COM-VPE) was used to make a sophisticated monolithic cascade cell, with a peak AMO efficiency of 16.6%, not corrected for 14% grid coverage. The cell has 9 epitaxial layers. The top cell is 1.35 microns thick with a 0.1 micron thich emitter. Both cells are heteroface n-p structures. The cascade cell uses metal interconnects.     OM-VPE grown materials for high efficiency solar cells

    Organometallic sources are available for all the III-V elements and a variety of dopants; thus it is possible to use the technique to grow a wide variety of semiconductor compounds. AlGaAsSb and AlGaInAs alloys for multijunction monolithic solar cells were grown by OM-VPE. While the effort concentrated on terrestrial applications, the success of OM-VPE grown GaAs/AlGaAs concentrator solar cells (23% at 400 suns) demonstrates that OM-VPE is suitable for growing high efficiency solar cells in large quantities for space applications. In addition, OM-VPE offers the potential for substantial cost reduction of photovoltaic devices with scale up and automation and due to high process yield from reproducible, uniform epitaxial growths with excellent surface morphology

    Understanding and utilizing administrative versus union priorities to improve the organization

    Many public emergency service organizations contain an organized and united workforce, commonly known as a union. The purpose of this research is to discover or reveal the extent in which positive or negative working relationships between unions and administrators influence morale, production, and safety concerns. The academic literature tells us that a positive and healthy working relationship between unions and administrations would improve the organization, but we have a void knowledge about how to create a positive and healthy working relationship and how that relationship would improve the organization. Data was collected via surveys with a target population of full-time fire department employees that are or were part of an organization that has an organized union or association to represent the members of the organization regarding administrative issues. The variables analyzed for this study measure individual perceptions of workplace morale, employee production, and the effect of safety issues on workplace morale and employee production. The results show that firefighters view workplace morale and employee production differently based on their perception of the working relationship between administrators and unions. It also shows that an individual's position in an organization, whether union member, union leader, administrator, or a combination of these roles changes their perception of workplace morale and employee production. Finally, it shows that an individual's position in an organization, whether union member, union leader, administrator, or a combination of these roles changes their position regarding safety issues within the organization. The findings of this study can help public safety organizations recognize the need to develop and improve the working relationship between administrators and employees/labor associations. Without high morale for the employees, the production levels may not be the best that they can be. Future research should focus on avenues to improve the cohesion and working relationship between unions and administration by increasing communication, collaboration, education, and mutual training

    We examine the potential for detecting and studying Higgs bosons at a photon-photon collider facility associated with a future linear collider. Our study incorporates realistic \gam\gam luminosity spectra based on the most probable available laser technology. Results include detector simulations.     Progress on the Development of Future Airport Surface Wireless Communications Network

    Continuing advances in airport surface management and improvements in airport surface safety are required to enable future growth in air traffic throughout the airspace, as airport arrival and departure delays create a major system bottleneck. These airport management and safety advances will be built upon improved communications, navigation, surveillance, and weather sensing, creating an information environment supporting system automation. The efficient movement of the digital data generated from these systems requires an underlying communications network infrastructure to connect data sources with the intended users with the required quality of service. Current airport surface communications consists primarily of buried copper or fiber cable. Safety related communications with mobile airport surface assets occurs over 25 kHz VHF voice and data channels. The available VHF spectrum, already congested in many areas, will be insufficient to support future data traffic requirements. Therefore, a broadband wireless airport surface communications network is considered a requirement for the future airport component of the air transportation system. Progress has been made on defining the technology and frequency spectrum for the airport surface wireless communications network. The development of a test and demonstration facility and the definition of required testing and standards development are now underway. This paper will review the progress and planned future work

    Practitioner accounts and knowledge production: an analysis of three marketing discourses

    Responding to repeated calls for marketing academicians to connect with marketing actors, we offer an empirically-sourced discourse analysis of the ways in which managers portray their practices. Focusing on the micro-discourses and narratives that marketing actors draw upon to represent their work we argue that dominant representations of marketing knowledge production present a number of critical concerns for marketing theory and marketing education. We also evidence that the often promoted idea of a need to close the gap between theory - as a dominant discourse - and practice, as a way of doing marketing, is problematic to pursue. We suggest that a more fruitful agenda resides in the development of a range of polyphonic and creative micro-discourses of management, promoting context, difference and individual meaning in marketing knowledge production

    Physics Opportunities of e+e- Linear Colliders

    We describe the anticipated experimental program of an e+e- linear collider in the energy range 500 GeV -- 1.5 TeV. We begin with a description of current collider designs and the expected experimental environment. We then discuss precision studies of the W boson and top quark. Finally, we review the range of models proposed to explain the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking and show, for each case, the central role that the linear collider experiments will play in elucidating this physics.
