An experimental comparison of a genetic algorithm and a hill-climber for term selection
Purpose – The term selection problem for selecting query terms in information filtering and routing has been investigated using hill-climbers of various kinds, largely through the Okapi experiments in the TREC series of conferences. Although these are simple deterministic approaches which examine the effect of changing the weight of one term at a time, they have been shown to improve the retrieval effectiveness of filtering queries in these TREC experiments. Hill-climbers are, however, likely to get trapped in local optima, and the use of more sophisticated local search techniques for this problem that attempt to break out of these optima are worth investigating. To this end, we apply a genetic algorithm (GA) to the same problem.
Design/Methodology/Approach – We use a standard TREC test collection from the TREC-8 filtering track, recording mean average precision and recall measures to allow comparison between the hillclimber and GA algorithms. We also vary elements of the GA, such as probability of a word being included, probability of mutation and population size in order to measure the effect of these variables. Different strategies such as Elitist and Non-Elitist methods are used, as well as Roulette Wheel and Rank selection GA algorithms.
Findings – The results of tests suggest that both techniques are, on average, better than the baseline, but the implemented GA does not match the overall performance of a hill-climber. The Rank selection algorithm does better on average than the Roulette Wheel algorithm. There is no evidence in this study that varying word inclusion probability, mutation probability or Elitist method make much difference to the overall results. Small population sizes do not appear to be as effective as larger population sizes.
Research limitations/implications – The evidence provided here would suggest that being stuck in a local optima for the term selection optimization problem does not appear to be detrimental to the overall success of the hill-climber. The evidence from term rank order would appear to provide extra useful evidence which hill-climbers can use efficiently and effectively to narrow the search space.
Originality/Value – The paper represents the first attempt to compare hill-climbers with GAs on a problem of this type
Multipartite entanglement in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) pigment-protein complex
We investigate multipartite states in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO)
pigment-protein complex of the green sulfur bacteria using a Lorentzian
spectral density of the phonon reservoir fitted with typical parameter
estimates of the species, P. aestuarii. The evolution of the entanglement
measure of the excitonic W qubit states is evaluated in the picosecond time
range, showing increased revivals in the non-Markovian regime. Similar trends
are observed in the evolution dynamics of the Meyer-Wallach measure of the
N-exciton multipartite state, with results showing that multipartite
entanglement can last from 0.5 to 1 ps, between the Bchls of the FMO complex.
The teleportation and quantum information splitting fidelities associated with
the GHZ and W_A resource states of the excitonic qubit channels of the FMO
complex show that revivals in fidelities increase with the degree of
non-Markovian strength of the decoherent environment. Results indicate that
quantum information processing tasks involving teleportation followed by the
decodification process involving W_A states of the FMO complex, may play a
critical role during coherent oscillations at physiological temperatures.Comment: 16 pages, new figs, typo
Lost in translation: a multi-level case study of the metamorphosis of meanings and action in public sector organisational innovation
This paper explores the early implementation of an organisational innovation in the UK National Health Service (NHS) - Treatment Centres (TCs) - designed to dramatically reduce waiting lists for elective care. The paper draws on case studies of eight TCs (each at varying stages of their development) and aims to explore how meanings about TCs are created and evolve, and how these meanings impact upon the development of the organisational innovation. Research on organisational meanings needs to take greater account of the fact that modern organisations like the NHS are complex multi-level phenomena, comprising layers of interlacing networks. To understand the pace, direction and impact of organisational innovation and change we need to study the interconnections between meanings across different organisational levels. The data presented in this paper show how the apparently simple, relatively unformed, concept of a TC framed by central government, is translated and transmuted by subsequent layers in the health service administration, and by players in local health economies and, ultimately in the TCs themselves, picking up new rationales, meanings, and significance as it goes. The developmental histories of TCs reveal a range of significant re-workings of macro policy with the result that there is considerable diversity and variation between local TC schemes. The picture is of important disconnections between meanings, that in many ways mirror Weick’s (1976) ‘loosely coupled systems’. The emergent meanings and the direction of micro-level development of TCs appear more strongly determined by interactions within the local TC environment, notably between what we identify as groups of ‘idealists’, ‘pragmatists’, ‘opportunists’ and ‘sceptics’ than by the framing (Goffman 1974) provided by macro and meso organisational levels. While this illustrates the limitations of top down and policy-driven attempts at change, and highlights the crucial importance of the front-line local ‘micro-systems’ (Donaldson & Mohr, 2000) in the overall scheme of implementing organisational innovations, the space or headroom provided by frames at the macro and meso levels can enable local change, albeit at variable speed and with uncertain outcomes
Overcoming the barriers to implementing urban road user charging schemes
Urban road user charging offers the potential to achieve significant improvements in urban transport, but is notoriously difficult to implement. Cities need guidance on the range of factors to be considered in planning and implementing such schemes. This paper summarises the results of a 3 year programme which has collated evidence on the issues of most concern to cities. A state of the art report has provided evidence on 14 themes, ranging from objectives and design to implementation and evaluation. A set of 16 case studies has reviewed experience in design and implementation across Europe. The paper summarises their findings, provides references to more detailed information, presents the resulting policy recommendations to European, national and local government, and outlines the areas in which further research is needed
Population Dynamics on Complex Food Webs
In this work we analyse the topological and dynamical properties of a simple
model of complex food webs, namely the niche model. In order to underline
competition among species, we introduce "prey" and "predators" weighted overlap
graphs derived from the niche model and compare synthetic food webs with real
data. Doing so, we find new tests for the goodness of synthetic food web models
and indicate a possible direction of improvement for existing ones. We then
exploit the weighted overlap graphs to define a competition kernel for
Lotka-Volterra population dynamics and find that for such a model the stability

Systems, interactions and macrotheory
A significant proportion of early HCI research was guided by one very clear vision: that the existing theory base in psychology and cognitive science could be developed to yield engineering tools for use in the interdisciplinary context of HCI design. While interface technologies and heuristic methods for behavioral evaluation have rapidly advanced in both capability and breadth of application, progress toward deeper theory has been modest, and some now believe it to be unnecessary. A case is presented for developing new forms of theory, based around generic “systems of interactors.” An overlapping, layered structure of macro- and microtheories could then serve an explanatory role, and could also bind together contributions from the different disciplines. Novel routes to formalizing and applying such theories provide a host of interesting and tractable problems for future basic research in HCI
Dormancy and bud burst in Sultana vines
Dormancy and bud burst have been studied for sultana vines in the Murray Valley, Australia. The vines are in deep dormancy at the beginning of autumn and the intensity of dormancy decreases gradually during autumn and winter. Bud burst of cuttings taken during the dormant period occurs the more rapidly the higher the temperature at which they are held. There is evidence to suggest that sultanas have no chilling requirement and no clear distinction between organic and enforced dormancy. Treatment with 3 ml of ethylene chlorhydrin in a.201 container for 24 hours is effective in breaking dormancy. The most effective treatment veries slightly with the intensity of dormancy. Removing the outer bud scales or soaking buds in water decreases the intensity of dormancy. The pattern of bud burst found on canes in the field is established on pruned canes at least one month before the shoots appear. Both auxin and gibberellin will delay bud burst and reduce the proportion of buds which burst but auxin will not affect a bud above the point of application whereas gibberellin will do so
Species Abundance Patterns in Complex Evolutionary Dynamics
An analytic theory of species abundance patterns (SAPs) in biological
networks is presented. The theory is based on multispecies replicator dynamics
equivalent to the Lotka-Volterra equation, with diverse interspecies
interactions. Various SAPs observed in nature are derived from a single
parameter. The abundance distribution is formed like a widely observed
left-skewed lognormal distribution. As the model has a general form, the result
can be applied to similar patterns in other complex biological networks, e.g.

Pilot investigation of anterior fontanelle photoplethysmographic signals and their suitability in estimating arterial oxygen saturation
There is a need for more reliable, non-invasive and alternative measurement sites for the monitoring of arterial blood oxygen saturation in critically ill newborns at times of peripheral compromise. A pilot investigation on 14 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) newborns was conducted utilizing custom-made reflectance photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensors placed at the fontanelle and foot. The results suggest that the fontanelle is sensitive to changes in saturation, where saturation values obtained from the custom sensor were compared against commercial pulse oximeter values and results from a blood gas analyzer, however careful placement of the sensor at the fontanelle is an issue that needs further investigation
