    On Quasibound N* Nuclei

    The possibility for the existence of unstable bound states of the S11 nucleon resonance N∗^*(1535) and nuclei is investigated. These quasibound states are speculated to be closely related to the existence of the quasibound states of the eta mesons and nuclei. Within a simple model for the N N∗^* interaction involving a pion and eta meson exchange, N∗^*-nucleus potentials for N*-3^3He and N*-24^{24}Mg are evaluated and found to be of a Woods-Saxon like form which supports two to three bound states. In case of N*-3^3He, one state bound by only a few keV and another by 4 MeV is found. The results are however quite sensitive to the N N∗^* π\pi and N N∗^* η\eta vertex parameters. A rough estimate of the width of these states, based on the mean free path of the exchanged mesons in the nuclei leads to very broad states with Γ∼\Gamma \sim 80 and 110 MeV for N*-3^3He and N*-24^{24}Mg respectively.Comment: Presented at the Jagiellonian Symposium on Fundamental and Applied Subatomic Physics, Cracow, Poland, June 2015; to be published in Acta Physica Polonica B (2016

    Minimal AdS-Lorentz supergravity in three-dimensions

    The N=1\mathcal{N}=1 AdS-Lorentz superalgebra is studied and its relationship to semigroup expansion developed. Using this mathematical tool, the invariant tensors and Casimir operators are found. In terms of these invariants, a three-dimensionnal Chern--Simons supergravity action with AdS-Lorentz symmetry is constructed.     The informal city as a different way of urban regeneration

    The city is an "organism in the making", an entity in constant transformation, not a complex of immutable elements. The city represents the entire human experiential field of the world, considered as expression of a "fundamental movement of existence" in its completeness and historicity, expressed by the formative structure of tissues and building types, by the urban hierarchies, by the relations with the territory, by the social relations, and by the values and criticalities. The conference’s aim is to propose a dialectical comparison between scholars of Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban History, Restoration, Geography, on the theme of urban morphology with an interpretative perspective based on the concept of "operating history". Search for a multidisciplinary syncretism that eludes single analyzing techniques and aims to the complete reconstruction of the urban phenomenology in its totality and concrete essence, through the study of the changing and inflexible condition of ‘fluidity’ hinged on the world’s events. An integrated thought based on the critical concept of ‘making’ that constitutes, phase by phase, the signifying element of each present, explained through the relationship between the before and the after: that is the research perspective of ‘being’ that announces the notion of transformational process. Therefore, the projection in the future of the urban form is the central theme of the conference that proposes to stimulate the reflection on the issues as: recovery (not only of the historical city), re-use of existing urban spaces, regeneration, ex novo design in peripheral and peri-urban areas and natural spaces. All that, without neglecting the issue of sustainability, not considered with the strabismus of those who surrender to the "technique" pre-domain

    Structural Evaluation of Bamboo Bike Frames: Experimental and Numerical Analysis

    Construction of bicycles with bamboo frames has become an alternative to improve the quality of life of some communities, be friendly with the environment and be ecologically sustainable. However, the production of bike frames is made in an artisanal way and there are few antecedents that have proven their reliability. This work presents the evaluation and simulation of the mechanical behavior of bike frames made in bamboo. Three-points bending tests were performed using bamboo bars with similar dimensions to bike frames, and an equivalent elasticity modulus was determined and used as the input datum of a finite element model. A linear model material and beam elements were used to model the bike frame. Tests were performed using bike frames of bamboo applying loads greater than 7000 N, and the displacements were measured. The experimental displacements were used to calibrate the model, which consisted of modifying the rigidity of the connections until the displacements of the model fit near to 90%. The calibrated model was used for a fatigue simulation in order to predict the lifespan of the bike frame. Some technical values of bamboo bike frames were obtained so that these will allow them to define the technical characteristics of the product and guarantee their operating conditions

    Effect of the nature of the support on the enantioselective hydrogenation of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione over supported iridium catalysts

    The enantioselective hydrogenation of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione at 298 K and 40 bar over modified supported iridium catalysts has been studied. Cinchonidine has been used as chiral inducer. The catalysts were obtained by impregnation of Ir(acac)3 on three different supports: SiO2, TiO2 and MoO3, followed by calcination in air and reduction under hydrogen at 773 K. All the solids were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms at 77 K, H2 chemisorption, XRD, TEM, TPR and XPS. It was found that Ir/SiO2 and Ir/TiO2 catalysts reduced at high temperatures, 773 K, possess similar metal particle size, close to 2.0 nm, eventhough the H/Ir ratio obtained from H2 chemisorption showed larger differences, with the H/Ir ratio being lower for titania- and molybdenum-supported iridium catalysts. In these samples, migration of the partially reduced supports, TiOx and MoOx moieties, on the metal crystals induce the creation of Ird+ species. TPR and XPS results confirmed that the metal component was not completely reduced. The activity was influenced by the nature of the support, being more active those in the SMSI state such as Ir/TiO2 and Ir/MoO3 being more active. This has been attributed to the presence of electron deficient metal species, Ird+, which are responsible for the polarization of the carbonyl bond of the substrates, thus favoring the activity and enantioselectivity of the reaction. The effect of different solvents on the activity and the enantioselectivity of the reaction was also studied. The highest enantiomeric excess (ee) of (R)-1-phenyl-1-hydroxy-2-propanone (20%) was obtained with the Ir/TiO2 catalyst using acetic acid as solvent.The authors thank the support of Núcleo Científico Milenio ICM P99-92, and FONDECYT Grant 1030670.Peer reviewe
