Harmonic coordinates in the string and membrane equations

In this note, we first show that the solutions to Cauchy problems for two versions of relativistic string and membrane equations are diffeomorphic. Then we investigate the coordinates transformation presented in Ref. [9] (see (2.20) in Ref. [9]) which plays an important role in the study on the dynamics of the motion of string in Minkowski space. This kind of transformed coordinates are harmonic coordinates, and the nonlinear relativistic string equations can be straightforwardly simplified into linear wave equations under this transformation

    Magneto-controlled nonlinear optical materials

We exploit theoretically a magneto-controlled nonlinear optical material which contains ferromagnetic nanoparticles with a non-magnetic metallic nonlinear shell in a host fluid. Such an optical material can have anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical properties and a giant enhancement of nonlinearity, as well as an attractive figure of merit.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. SENS-5D trajectory and wind-sensitivity calculations for unguided rockets

    Get PDF
A computational procedure is described which numerically integrates the equations of motion of an unguided rocket. Three translational and two angular (roll discarded) degrees of freedom are integrated through the final burnout; and then, through impact, only three translational motions are considered. Input to the routine is: initial time, altitude and velocity, vehicle characteristics, and other defined options. Input format has a wide range of flexibility for special calculations. Output is geared mainly to the wind-weighting procedure, and includes summary of trajectory at burnout, apogee and impact, summary of spent-stage trajectories, detailed position and vehicle data, unit-wind effects for head, tail and cross winds, coriolis deflections, range derivative, and the sensitivity curves (the so called F(Z) and DF(Z) curves). The numerical integration procedure is a fourth-order, modified Adams-Bashforth Predictor-Corrector method. This method is supplemented by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to start the integration at t=0 and whenever error criteria demand a change in step size

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Shadow Masks for Nanogap Fabrication

We describe a technique for fabricating nanometer-scale gaps in Pt wires on insulating substrates, using individual single-walled carbon nanotubes as shadow masks during metal deposition. More than 80% of the devices display current-voltage dependencies characteristic of direct electron tunneling. Fits to the current-voltage data yield gap widths in the 0.8-2.3 nm range for these devices, dimensions that are well suited for single-molecule transport measurements

Magnetophoresis of nonmagnetic particles in ferrofluids

    Get PDF
Ferrofluids containing nonmagnetic particles are called inverse ferrofluids. On the basis of the Ewald-Kornfeld formulation and the Maxwell-Garnett theory, we theoretically investigate the magnetophoretic force exerting on the nonmagnetic particles in inverse ferrofluids due to the presence of a nonuniform magnetic field, by taking into account the structural transition and long-range interaction. We numerically demonstrate that the force can be adjusted by choosing appropriate lattices, volume fractions, geometric shapes, and conductivities of the nonmagnetic particles, as well as frequencies of external magnetic fields.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figure

Solutions of special asymptotics to the Einstein constraint equations

We construct solutions with prescribed asymptotics to the Einstein constraint equations using a cut-off technique. Moreover, we give various examples of vacuum asymptotically flat manifolds whose center of mass and angular momentum are ill-defined.Comment: 13 pages; the error in Lemma 3.5 fixed and typos corrected; to appear in Class.
