    An extreme analysis for the 2010 precipitation event at the south of Saskatchewan prairie

    After a prolonged drought period in the early 2000s, the Canadian prairie experienced a remarkably wet year in 2010. Five stations near the edge of the Saskatchewan boreal forest recorded historically high cumulative precipitation (from April to September). The exceptional wet year causes the public concerns on flood controls and land use management in the region. Using the Canadian National Climate Data Achieve, characteristics of six-month cumulative precipitation sums over Saskatchewan prairie are investigated by the Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) Theory. Based on the unconstrained GEV distribution, the 2010 event is outside the estimated 95% confidence intervals for the five Canadian prairie stations. On the contrary, the exceptional high 2010 cumulative perception sums for the five stations are still bounded by the estimated confidence bounds if the GEV distribution is constrained to the Gumbel distribution (i.e. setting the shape factor of the GEV distribution to be zero). These results demonstrate that the classical extreme analysis is useful for planning unprecedented extreme events in the Canadian Prairie, if the GEV distribution is constrained to the Gumbel distribution with the estimated uncertainty bounds based on the order statistics. © 2012 Global NEST Printed in Greece.     First-order transition of tethered membranes in 3d space

    We study a model of phantom tethered membranes, embedded in three-dimensional space, by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The membranes have hexagonal lattice structure where each monomer is interacting with six nearest-neighbors (NN). Tethering interaction between NN, as well as curvature penalty between NN triangles are taken into account. This model is new in the sense that NN interactions are taken into account by a truncated Lennard-Jones potential including both repulsive and attractive parts. The main result of our study is that the system undergoes a first-order crumpling transition from low temperature flat phase to high temperature crumpled phase, in contrast with early numerical results on models of tethered membranes.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Free boson formulation of boundary states in W_3 minimal models and the critical Potts model

    We develop a Coulomb gas formalism for boundary conformal field theory having a WW symmetry and illustrate its operation using the three state Potts model. We find that there are free-field representations for six WW conserving boundary states, which yield the fixed and mixed physical boundary conditions, and two WW violating boundary states which yield the free and new boundary conditions. Other WW violating boundary states can be constructed but they decouple from the rest of the theory. Thus we have a complete free-field realization of the known boundary states of the three state Potts model. We then use the formalism to calculate boundary correlation functions in various cases. We find that the conformal blocks arising when the two point function of Ď•2,3\phi_{2,3} is calculated in the presence of free and new boundary conditions are indeed the last two solutions of the sixth order differential equation generated by the singular vector.Comment: 25 page

    Mapping urban green infrastructure : a novel landscape-based approach to incorporating land-use and land-cover in the mapping of human-dominated systems

    Common approaches to mapping green infrastructure in urbanized landscapes invariably focus on measures of land-use or land-cover and associated functional or physical traits. However, such one-dimensional perspectives do not accurately capture the character and complexity of the landscapes in which urban inhabitants live. The new approach presented in this paper demonstrates how open-source, high spatial and temporal resolution data with global coverage can be used to measure and represent the landscape qualities of urban environments. Through going beyond simple metrics of quantity, such as percentage green and blue cover it is now possible to explore the extent to which landscape quality helps to unpick the mixed evidence presented in the literature on the benefits of urban nature to human well-being. Here we present a landscape approach, employing remote sensing, GIS and data reduction techniques, to map urban green infrastructure elements in a large UK city-region. Comparison with existing urban datasets demonstrates considerable improvement in terms of coverage and thematic detail. The characterisation of landscapes, using census tracts as spatial units, and subsequent exploration of associations with social-ecological attributes highlights the further detail which can be uncovered with the approach. For example, eight urban landscape types identified for the case study city exhibited associations with distinct socio-economic conditions accountable not only to quantities but also qualities of green and blue space. The identification of individual landscape features through simultaneous measures of land-use and land cover demonstrated unique and significant associations between the former and indicators of human health and ecological condition. The approach may therefore provide a promising basis for developing further insight into the processes and characteristics which affect human health and wellbeing in urban areas, both in the UK and beyond

    The effect of dung beetle size on soil nutrient mobilization in an afrotropical forest

    Despite recognition of its importance, little is known about functional aspects of soil macrofauna. Here, we investigated the effect of dung beetle body size on macronutrient movement (N, P, K, and C) from elephant dung into soil over 112 days in an Afrotropical forest. We report a large overall effect where more macronutrients are moved into soil over time when beetles are present compared to a control treatment. We also report a large effect of beetle body size on the amount of macronutrient movement, with larger dung beetles moving more nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and carbon from baseline measurements when compared to smaller sized dung beetles. The presence of smaller sized dung beetles showed a significant positive effect on potassium and phosphorus transfer only. We provide the first experimental evidence that the body size of African dungs directly influences the type of macronutrients recycled and discuss the importance of dung beetle body size for maintaining soil fertility

    Folding transition of the triangular lattice in a discrete three--dimensional space

    A vertex model introduced by M. Bowick, P. Di Francesco, O. Golinelli, and E. Guitter (cond-mat/9502063) describing the folding of the triangular lattice onto the face centered cubic lattice has been studied in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method. The model describes the behaviour of a polymerized membrane in a discrete three--dimensional space. We have introduced a curvature energy and a symmetry breaking field and studied the phase diagram of the resulting model. By varying the curvature energy parameter, a first-order transition has been found between a flat and a folded phase for any value of the symmetry breaking field.Comment: 11 pages, latex file, 2 postscript figure

    A stochastic reconstruction framework for analysis of water resource system vulnerability to climate-induced changes in river flow regime

    Assessments of potential impacts of climate change on water resources systems are generally based on the use of downscaled climate scenarios to force hydrological and water resource systems models and hence quantify potential changes in system response. This approach, however, has several limitations. The uncertainties in current climate and hydrological models can be large, such analyses are rapidly outdated as new scenarios become available, and limited insight into system response is obtained. Here, we propose an alternative methodology in which system vulnerability is analyzed directly as a function of the potential variations in flow characteristics. We develop a stochastic reconstruction framework that generates a large ensemble of perturbed flow series at the local scale to represent a range of potential flow responses to climate change. From a theoretical perspective, the proposed reconstruction scheme can be considered as an extension of both the conventional resampling and the simple delta-methods. By the use of a two-parameter representation of regime change (i.e., the shift in the timing of the annual peak and the shift in the annual flow volume), system vulnerability can be visualized in a two-dimensional map. The methodology is applied to the current water resource system in southern Alberta, Canada, to explore the system's vulnerability to potential changes in the streamflow regime. Our study shows that the system is vulnerable to the expected decrease in annual flow volume, particularly when it is combined with an earlier annual peak. Under such conditions, adaptation will be required to return the system to the feasible operational mode. © 2013. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved

    Phase transitions of an intrinsic curvature model on dynamically triangulated spherical surfaces with point boundaries

    An intrinsic curvature model is investigated using the canonical Monte Carlo simulations on dynamically triangulated spherical surfaces of size upto N=4842 with two fixed-vertices separated by the distance 2L. We found a first-order transition at finite curvature coefficient \alpha, and moreover that the order of the transition remains unchanged even when L is enlarged such that the surfaces become sufficiently oblong. This is in sharp contrast to the known results of the same model on tethered surfaces, where the transition weakens to a second-order one as L is increased. The phase transition of the model in this paper separates the smooth phase from the crumpled phase. The surfaces become string-like between two point-boundaries in the crumpled phase. On the contrary, we can see a spherical lump on the oblong surfaces in the smooth phase. The string tension was calculated and was found to have a jump at the transition point. The value of \sigma is independent of L in the smooth phase, while it increases with increasing L in the crumpled phase. This behavior of \sigma is consistent with the observed scaling relation \sigma \sim (2L/N)^\nu, where \nu\simeq 0 in the smooth phase, and \nu=0.93\pm 0.14 in the crumpled phase. We should note that a possibility of a continuous transition is not completely eliminated.Comment: 15 pages with 10 figure

    Coulomb-gas formulation of SU(2) branes and chiral blocks

    We construct boundary states in SU(2)kSU(2)_k WZNW models using the bosonized Wakimoto free-field representation and study their properties. We introduce a Fock space representation of Ishibashi states which are coherent states of bosons with zero-mode momenta (boundary Coulomb-gas charges) summed over certain lattices according to Fock space resolution of SU(2)kSU(2)_k. The Virasoro invariance of the coherent states leads to families of boundary states including the B-type D-branes found by Maldacena, Moore and Seiberg, as well as the A-type corresponding to trivial current gluing conditions. We then use the Coulomb-gas technique to compute exact correlation functions of WZNW primary fields on the disk topology with A- and B-type Cardy states on the boundary.
