Vibration based structural health monitoring of a composite plate with stiffeners

A vibration based damage identification algorithm is implemented to assess the damage of a thin-walled composite structure. The structure analysed is a skin with stiffeners, as frequently applied in aircraft components. Both experimental and numerical studies on a single composite skin--stiffener structure showed that the modal strain energy damage index (MSE--DI) algorithm is a suitable method for the detection and localization of a delamination of the stiffener from the skin. A recent study on a strip with a single stiffener and an artificial delamination is extended to a study on a plate with two stiffeners and an impact induced delamination damage

Abstract

Background

In cancer studies, it is common that multiple microarray experiments are conducted to measure the same clinical outcome and expressions of the same set of genes. An important goal of such experiments is to identify a subset of genes that can potentially serve as predictive markers for cancer development and progression. Analyses of individual experiments may lead to unreliable gene selection results because of the small sample sizes. Meta analysis can be used to pool multiple experiments, increase statistical power, and achieve more reliable gene selection. The meta analysis of cancer microarray data is challenging because of the high dimensionality of gene expressions and the differences in experimental settings amongst different experiments.

Results

We propose a Meta Threshold Gradient Descent Regularization (MTGDR) approach for gene selection in the meta analysis of cancer microarray data. The MTGDR has many advantages over existing approaches. It allows different experiments to have different experimental settings. It can account for the joint effects of multiple genes on cancer, and it can select the same set of cancer-associated genes across multiple experiments. Simulation studies and analyses of multiple pancreatic and liver cancer experiments demonstrate the superior performance of the MTGDR.

Conclusion

The MTGDR provides an effective way of analyzing multiple cancer microarray studies and selecting reliable cancer-associated genes.</p

Determination of the fracture resistance of ductile polymers: The ESIS TC4 recent experience

Round-robin (RR) tests carried out under the direction of the Technical Committee 4, "Polymers, Polymer Composites and Adhesives," of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS TC4) showed that the multispecimen methodology employed for the construction of the crack growth resistance curve (J vs crack extension, Δa) of polymers often does not provide reliable data because of the uncertainties associated with the measurement of Δa. With this in mind, the ESIS TC4 attention has been more recently focused on the analysis of a testing scheme based on the load separation criterion, which does not require the measurement of Δa.With the aim to employ this new approach into a standardized procedure, the degree of reproducibility of the results obtainable with the application of this testing scheme to ductile polymers has been assessed by means of multilaboratory RR testing exercises that started in 2011. An ESIS TC4 reference draft protocol was prepared and 10 laboratories participated in the RR activities. The present work describes the load separation criterion-based testing procedure recently examined by ESIS TC4 and gives a summary of the results obtained in the RR activities, which appear encouraging

    Familial Goiter and Related Disorders

Synthesis, storage, secretion, delivery, and utilization of thyroid hormones are dependent upon specific enzymatic activity; inherited disorders may cause thyroid disease. Studies of a cretinous patient from consanguine marriage have indicated a limited response to thyrotrophic (TSH), both in synthesis of the specific thyroid protein thyroglobulin and in cell growth and division. Other similar response has been observed in a strain of mice. Familial goiter and hypothyroidism may occur when there is failure of the thyroid cell to transport iodide.</p
