Use of Aluminum-Foil and Oat-Straw Mulches for Controlling Aster Leafhopper, \u3ci\u3eMacrosteles Fascifrons\u3c/i\u3e (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), and Aster Yellows in Carrots.

Aluminum-foil and oat-straw mulches significantly (P \u3c 0.05) reduced aster leafhopper numbers on carrots compared to an untreated control and a malathion spray treatment during the first half of the growing season. The amount of reflected light was significantly higher in both aluminum-foil and oat-straw mulched plots compared to unmulched treatments. Mulch effectiveness decreased when the closing carrot canopy reduced surface area of reflective mulches and amount of reflected light The percentage of aster yellows-infected plants was significantly lower (P \u3c 0.05) in aluminum-foil and straw mulches and in the malathion spray plots compared to the untreated control. Results demonstrated that aluminum-foil and straw mulches gave control of aster leafhoppers and aster yellows in carrots equal to that of a conventional insecticide spray program

Effects of Leaf Storage and Distillation Time on the Quality of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus grandis) Essential Oil

Essential oils such as eucalyptus oil are widely used as antioxidants, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, fragrance, and other medical needs. This oil is extracted from eucalyptus terpenoid compounds, e.g., cineole. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the leaf storage time and distillation time (DT) on Eucalyptus grandis essential oil yield and quality. Three DT treatments (i.e., 2 h, 3 h, and 4 h) and storage time of eucalyptus leaf in warehouse (i.e., 2 h, 3 h, and 4 h) were applied on eucalyptus leaf samples. The quality of the eucalyptus essential oil was determined using cineole content, solubility in alcohol, and optical rotation. The essential oil yield ranges between 0.165-0.220%, with the maximum yield of 0.220% on 3 days of storage and 4-hour distillation time. The cineole content ranged between 10-30% and the highest at 3 h DT with a storage time of 2 days. The optical rotation on the tested specimen showed that the index of refraction produced in oil projections was positive. The samples in all treatments showed high solubility in alcohol. This study showed that storage time of 3 days and 3-hour distillation time resulted in the most optimal eucalyptus essential oil yield, and the excellent quality of oil produced has a high potential for health product applications

Induction motors are one type of electric motors that work based on electromagnetic induction. The problem that often arises lately is the occurrence of voltage imbalances. Unbalanced voltage is a voltage value that is not the same in a three-phase voltage system contained in the electrical power system. On the basis of these problems, it is necessary to conduct research that can analyze the dynamics of the performance of an induction motor. Dynamic analysis is done by modeling a three-phase induction motor using an arbitrary reference frame with the direct qudrature transformation method in Matlab/Simulink. In studies with voltage imbalances up to 5%, electromagnetic torque has decreased by 2.89% to 13.83% and stator current in one phase has increased by 29.1% to 245.8%

Evolved stars hint to an external origin of enhanced metallicity in planet-hosting stars

Exo-planets are preferentially found around high metallicity main sequence stars. We aim at investigating whether evolved stars share this property, and what this tells about planet formation. Statistical tools and the basic concepts of stellar evolution theory are applied to published results as well as our own radial velocity and chemical analyses of evolved stars. We show that the metal distributions of planet-hosting (P-H) dwarfs and giants are different, and that the latter do not favor metal-rich systems. Rather, these stars follow the same age-metallicity relation as the giants without planets in our sample. The straightforward explanation is to attribute the difference between dwarfs and giants to the much larger masses of giants' convective envelopes. If the metal excess on the main sequence is due to pollution, the effects of dilution naturally explains why it is not observed among evolved stars. Although we cannot exclude other explanations, the lack of any preference for metal-rich systems among P-H giants could be a strong indication of the accretion of metal-rich material. Representasi Banalitas Kejahatan Dalam Film “the Act of Killing”

Film “The Act of Killing” membawa gaya dan pandangan baru yang membahas persoalan tragedi 1965 dengan mengambil sudut pandang algojo 1965. Film ini menampilkan kesaksian langsung dari para pelaku pembunuhan dan penyiksaan orang-orang komunis pada 1965-1966 dengan berbagai rekonstruksi, wawancara dan juga adegan yang mengikuti kehidupan sehari-hari. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, rumusan masalah yang ingin dijawab dalam penelitian ini, yaitu bagaimana representasi banalitas kejahatan dalam film “The Act of Killing”. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, metode yang dipakai adalah semiotika khususnya kode-kode televisi John Fiske. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori milik Hannah Arendt (1963) mengenai banalitas kejahatan. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa representasi banalitas kejahatan melalui penggambaran tokoh yang diangkat dalam film ini memiliki karakteristik, seperti semua kategori tidak dipikirkan, tidak mampu berpikir secara mandiri, kepatuhan pada otoritas dan memercayai kejahatan sebagai tindakan kepahlawanan.
