Editorial for Special Issue An introduction to the Special Issue, this editorial highlights the changes (or otherwise) in the global socio-political landscape since the Special Issue was first proposed in late 2018. It offers a brief introduction to each article, a rationale for the structure of this issue, and advocates for the importance of scholarship that examines the relationship between performance and right-wing politics

Performance for futures (Intellectual Output 3)

Performance for Futures students are invite to experiment with a more embodied way of using the future by means of three powerful theatric ‘acts’. In ACT 1 students can experiment with the concept of status, which may increase self-awareness about their status (and that of others) in challenging situations, and empower them to take conscious action to positively affect it. In ACT 2 students are invited to engage with devising and dramaturgy, two stages in a theatre-making process, and perform a variety of futures for themselves to discover how they relate to these futures. In ACT 3 students will be introduced to image theatre techniques that will help them get ‘out of their heads’ and ‘into their bodies’. Embodying their imagined futures will allow them to give actual, physical shape to their emotions and feelings related to their imagined futures

Freedom in the margins: experiences from Brazil

This paper presents a conversation between Lucia Gayotto and Marcio Meirelles curated by Pedro de Senna. In it, Gayotto and Meirelles discuss their experiences, respectively, at the Escola Livre de Teatro de Santo André and the Universidade Livre do Teatro Vila Velha, both theatre schools operating at the margins of the official Brazilian educational establishment and making use of overtly Freirean pedagogical models

Director training and education: Models from Brazil and the UK

This paper presents a conversation that took place via Zoom on 6 September 2022, between Adriana Schneider Alcure and Bruce Adams, curated by Pedro de Senna. In it, Alcure and Adams discuss their experiences, respectively, at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and Middlesex University, London (MDX). Both universities offer BA courses in theatre directing, but follow very different models. Both universities also offer MAs in Theatre Arts (MDX) and ‘Artes da Cena’ (UFRJ), with similar interdisciplinary ethea. Mediated by de Senna’s experience of both cultural contexts, Adams and Alcure talk about commonalities and differences, addressing two key pedagogical questions: in what ways can directing be taught, if at all? And: what is the role of theatre (and theatre directors) in society? The conversation is not directly transcribed, but edited and organised by de Senna, drawing on the themes explored, and addresses contemporary theatre director training from an intercultural perspective. The exchange touches on questions of academic and artistic labour, student cohorts, curriculum design, interdisciplinarity; and the relationship between ‘training’ and ‘education’, when it comes to the performing arts in general, and theatre directing in particular: are these terms even adequate? It is clear that these questions are imbricated with those relating to the purpose of, and access to, the arts and education more broadly, in societies that, while very different, have more in common than might at first be acknowledged

The garden of dystopian pleasures

This article offers a reflection on the authors' curation of (Dousos and Ieropoulos) and participation in (de Senna and Pfützenreuter) The Garden of Dystopian Pleasures, a performance festival that took place at the Athens School of Fine Arts in 2018. Dousos and Ieropoulos present their thoughts around the need to curate such an event in the first place, discussing the context within which they operate, the Athenian art scene, while making the case that ambiguity as a political and poetical tool must not be surrendered to the right. De Senna and Pfützenreuter discuss their experiences in creating and performing right-wing personas that blur the lines between what is real and what is performed; engaging in strategies of overidentification, they initiate a discussion around the ethics and role of critical artistic practice in response to contemporary right-wing radicalisation and aesthetics. Mirroring the curatorially experimental nature of the festival, the contributors speak from multiple positionalities. As such, the structure and tone of the article attempt a destabilisation of the form of a conventional academic paper, avoiding an overall, singular summing-up of the positions presented, and allowing for shifts in register

LIBERDADE, ESTADO E RELIGIÃO NOS LINEAMENTOS DA FILOSOFIA DO DIREITO DE HEGEL

Pretendo analisar as concepções de Hegel acerca da Liberdade e do Estado, afim de relacionar Religião, Estado e Liberdade dentro de seu pensamento. Abordaremos sobre a questão do reconhecimento na Fenomenologia do Espírito, tratando em específico sobre a relação entre o Senhor e o Escravo, como esse reconhecimento só é mútuo, e logo, como a liberdade só é capaz de se objetivar na eticidade, mais especificamente no Estado na Filosofia do Direito. Demonstraremos como alcançar a figura do Estado, perpassando pelos momentos da éticos da Família e da Sociedade Civil, além de expor qual é o lugar da religião nesse processo de efetivação da liberdade, usando também as obras Enciclopédia das Ciências Filosóficas em Compêndio Vol. III e El Concepto de Religión. Veremos como a liberdade, que perpassa todo o pensamento hegeliano, é o alcance objetivo do Estado e da Religião. Ao final dos capítulos, traremos ainda críticas de Honneth em relação à Hegel

O Fenômeno do Hibridismo Organizacional nas Organizações Sem Fins Lucrativos: o Caso da Associação Ateliê de Ideias

O objetivo deste estudo é compreender como o fenômeno do hibridismo organizacional se materializa na Associação Ateliê de Ideias, em suas atividades de captação de recursos para o desenvolvimento de projetos sociais junto às comunidades atendidas. A Associação Ateliê de Ideias é uma organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público OSCIP, reconhecida em nível nacional, atua com diversos projetos de relevância na promoção de meios alternativos de trabalho e geração de renda para a comunidade local, como proposta à promoção e ao desenvolvimento através dos núcleos: finanças solidárias, habitacional, desenvolvimento comunitário e Difusão de Tecnologias Sociais. A metodologia adotada foi o estudo de caso único incorporado Tipo 2, por se tratar de um caso único com mais de uma unidade de análise, que são os projetos, denominados como subunidades dentro da unidade principal, utilizando a abordagem qualitativa descritiva para compreender o fenômeno do hibridismo organizacional na Associação Ateliê de Ideias. Os dados relativos ao caso foram obtidos através de entrevista semiestruturada. Para análises dos dados, pautou-se a análise de conteúdo, formando categorias a posteriori. Como resultado, a pesquisa mostrou que a organização ainda não tem em sua gestão o desenvolvimento do fenômeno híbrido para captação de recursos, mas alguns dos projetos desenvolvidos apresentam possibilidades de atividades híbridas, e sinais direcionam para essa mudança como perspectiva para o futuro. Assim, como solução para os problemas da falta de recurso, a geração de renda por meio de comercialização e prestação de serviços é uma possibilidade nos projetos desenvolvidos. Second Generation Ethanol - Technological Intensity on the Integrated Cycle

The purpose of this study is to investigate Second Generation Ethanol’s (SGE) production cycle in order to understand the level of SGE’s technological intensity in the integrated cycle. The suggested methodology comprises of a review of literature surrounding the requirements and indexes of technological intensity. A wide selection of database and review of specialized literature have been described to demonstrate the proposed discussion and conclusions. It has been observed that SGE puts forward a higher level of technological intensity in relation to First Generation Ethanol (FGE)

Descrição de um novo gênero e espécie da família Melphidippidae (Crustacea: Amphipoda) para as águas profundas do Brasil

Os Amphipoda da família Melphidippidae são gammarídeos bentônicos, de tamanho proporcionalmente alongado, caracterizados por apresentarem a antena 2 alongada, a órbita ocular anteriormente projetada e os somitos abdominais (pleonitos) 1-3 com serrilhados dorsais transversos. Melphidippidae contem 18 espécies agrupadas em quatro gêneros: Melphidippa Boeck, 1871; Melphidippella Sars, 1894; Melphisana Barnard, 1962; e Melphisubchela Andres, 1981. As espécies desta família estão distribuídas em todos os oceanos do mundo, não havendo, no entanto, qualquer registro até então da família Melphidippidae para o Brasil. Isso demonstra mais uma vez a escassez de estudos taxonômicos sobre os Amphipoda em águas brasileiras, sendo de extrema importância o incentivo à formação de novos especialista na sistemática deste grupo. O material examinado neste projeto é proveniente do Projeto MBT, coordenado pelo Instituto Oceanográfico da USP (IO-USP), e foi coletado por meio de dragas retangulares ao longo da plataforma continental e mar profundo das regiões sudeste e sul do Brasil. Todo o material está temporariamente depositado na coleção do Laboratório de Zoologia do UniFOA, conservado em etanol 70%, e será depositado definitivamente na Coleção de Crustacea do Museu de Zoologia da USP, após a conclusão deste estudo. Um espécime macho e uma fêmea foram dissecados e posteriormente montados em lâminas com gelatina de glicerina, donde foram ilustrados sob microscópio óptico com câmara clara (Motic BA-310). As ilustrações foram digitalizadas em CorelDraw X5 e o mapa de distribuição elaborado em ArcGis 9.3. Com base no material descrito, serão estabelecidos um novo gênero e uma nova espécie para a família, visto que seus caracteres morfológicos não coincidem com as diagnoses de nenhum dos gêneros agrupados nesta família
