    Couplage diffusion d'humidité/ états mécaniques internes dans les polymères et composites - une approche thermodynamique

    International audienceNous utilisons une approche thermodynamique, basée sur la définition du potentiel chimique de l'eau, pour établir un modèle couplant la diffusion de l'humidité aux états mécaniques d'un polymère. Le modèle permet de prendre en compte les évolutions, au cours du processus de diffusion, de la masse volumique du polymère et de la capacité maximale d'absorption d'humidité aux frontières. L'approche développée peut s'appliquer à des cas de chargement dissymétriques en termes d'humidité et de pression extérieure. Le modèle ainsi établi permet, entre autres, de prédire les profils de teneur en eau dans l'épaisseur du polymère, tout au long de la phase transitoire du processus de diffusion. Les résultats obtenus montrent l'effet considérable, induit par l'application d'une pression extérieure, sur la cinétique de diffusion de l'humidité dans les polymères

    Soil acidity and the liming of Iowa soils

    Whether or not their lands will give better crop yields if lime1 is applied has become a live question with Iowa farmers. They have written many letters of inquiry upon this point to the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station and hundreds of soil samples have been analyzed to make satisfactory answer. To provide more complete information relative to this important question of soil acidity and the use of lime in Iowa, the agronomy section of the experiment station gathered many soil samples from well scattered localities in the principal soil areas. These were analyzed and the results are now presented and discussed in this bulletin. These analyses show that liming is likely to be profitable in the Mississippi loess, the Southern Iowa loess and the Iowan drift areas because those soils are very apt to be more or less acid; also, that the soils of the Wisconsin drift are only occasionally in need of liming, and those of the Missouri loess only very rarely

    A 3D-printed continuously variable transmission for an electric vehicle prototype

    This paper aims to present the design of a new 3D-printed continuously variable transmission (CVT) developed for an electric vehicle prototype competing in Shell Eco-marathon electric battery category, a world-wide energy efficiency competition sponsored by Shell. The proposed system is composed of a polymeric conic geared friction wheel assembled in the motor axle and directly coupled to the rear tire of the vehicle. The conical shape allows to implement a continuous variation of the geared friction wheel diameter in contact with the tire. The motor with the geared friction wheel was mounted over a board with linear bearings, allowing the speed ratio to change by moving the board laterally. A computational simulation model of a prototype electric vehicle with the proposed 3D-printed CVT was created in Matlab/Simulink environment to obtain the traction force in the geared friction wheel and also to analyze the vehicle performance. The simulation results demonstrated possibilities of increasing vehicle speed range output and available torque in the rear traction wheel. Also, it is shown with the simulated model that the designed CVT consumes 10.46% less energy than a fixed transmission ratio, demonstrating the CVT concept?s potential for battery consumption reduction. Lastly, a 3D-printing slicing software with an optimization algorithm plug-in was used to determine the best printing parameters for the conic geared friction wheel based on the tangential force, maximum displacement and safety factor. When compared to the original part with a 100% infill density, the optimized solution reduced the component mass by about 12% while maintaining safe mechanical resistance and stiffness.2314-4B69-C2B9 | C?sar Miguel de Almeida VasquesN/

    A CNN-LSTM Hybrid Model for Wrist Kinematics Estimation Using Surface Electromyography

    Convolutional neural network (CNN) has been widely exploited for simultaneous and proportional myoelectric control due to its capability of deriving informative, representative and transferable features from surface electromyography (sEMG). However, muscle contractions have strong temporal dependencies but conventional CNN can only exploit spatial correlations. Considering that long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) is able to capture long-term and non-linear dynamics of time-series data, in this paper we propose a CNN-LSTM hybrid model to fully explore the temporal-spatial information in sEMG. Firstly, CNN is utilized to extract deep features from sEMG spectrum, then these features are processed via LSTM-based sequence regression to estimate wrist kinematics. Six healthy participants are recruited for the participatory collection and motion analysis under various experimental setups. Estimation results in both intra-session and inter-session evaluations illustrate that CNN-LSTM significantly outperforms CNN, LSTM and several representative machine learning approaches, particularly when complex wrist movements are activated

    Deterministic nano-assembly of a coupled quantum emitter - photonic crystal cavity system

    The interaction of a single quantum emitter with its environment is a central theme in quantum optics. When placed in highly confined optical fields, such as those created in optical cavities or plasmonic structures, the optical properties of the emitter can change drastically. In particular, photonic crystal (PC) cavities show high quality factors combined with an extremely small mode volume. Efficiently coupling a single quantum emitter to a PC cavity is challenging because of the required positioning accuracy. Here, we demonstrate deterministic coupling of single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers to high-quality gallium phosphide PC cavities, by deterministically positioning their 50 nm-sized host nanocrystals into the cavity mode maximum with few-nanometer accuracy. The coupling results in a 25-fold enhancement of NV center emission at the cavity wavelength. With this technique, the NV center photoluminescence spectrum can be reshaped allowing for efficient generation of coherent photons, providing new opportunities for quantum science.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Spin dynamics in the optical cycle of single nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond

    We investigate spin-dependent decay and intersystem crossing in the optical cycle of single negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond. We use spin control and pulsed optical excitation to extract both the spin-resolved lifetimes of the excited states and the degree of optically-induced spin polarization. By optically exciting the centre with a series of picosecond pulses, we determine the spin-flip probabilities per optical cycle, as well as the spin-dependent probability for intersystem crossing. This information, together with the indepedently measured decay rate of singlet population provides a full description of spin dynamics in the optical cycle of NV centres. The temperature dependence of the singlet population decay rate provides information on the number of singlet states involved in the optical cycle.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Toward efficient and tailorable mid-infrared emitters utilizing multilayer graphene

A natural replacement for the conventional incandescent sources still widely used in such applications are semiconductor LEDs, but to achieve emission at long wavelengths requires the realization of devices with narrow effective bandgaps, inherently leading to relatively poor internal and external quantum efficiencies. Recently, the technological potential of graphene-based incandescent emitters has been recognized, in part due to the ability of graphene to sustain extremely large current densities. Here we introduce a simple architecture, consisting of a back-reflector behind a multilayer graphene filament, which we use to produce emitters with wall-plug-efficiencies comparable to state-of-the art semiconductor cascade LEDs.     Diagnosis of sustainable collaboration in health promotion – a case study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Collaborations are important to health promotion in addressing multi-party problems. Interest in collaborative processes in health promotion is rising, but still lacks monitoring instruments. The authors developed the DIagnosis of Sustainable Collaboration (DISC) model to enable comprehensive monitoring of public health collaboratives. The model focuses on opportunities and impediments for collaborative change, based on evidence from interorganizational collaboration, organizational behavior and planned organizational change. To illustrate and assess the DISC-model, the 2003/2004 application of the model to the Dutch whole-school health promotion collaboration is described.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study combined quantitative research, using a cross-sectional survey, with qualitative research using the personal interview methodology and document analysis. A DISC-based survey was sent to 55 stakeholders in whole-school health promotion in one Dutch region. The survey consisted of 22 scales with 3 to 8 items. Only scales with a reliability score of 0.60 were accepted. The analysis provided for comparisons between stakeholders from education, public service and public health.</p> <p>The survey was followed by approaching 14 stakeholders for a semi-structured DISC-based interview. As the interviews were timed after the survey, the interviews were used to clarify unexpected and unclear outcomes of the survey as well.</p> <p>Additionally, a DISC-based document analysis was conducted including minutes of meetings, project descriptions and correspondence with schools and municipalities.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Response of the survey was 77% and of the interviews 86%. Significant differences between respondents of different domains were found for the following scales: organizational characteristics scale, the change strategies, network development, project management, willingness to commit and innovative actions and adaptations. The interviews provided a more specific picture of the state of the art of the studied collaboration regarding the DISC-constructs.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The DISC-model is more than just the sum of the different parameters provided in the literature on interorganizational collaboration, organization change, networking and setting-approaches. Monitoring a collaboration based on the DISC-model yields insight into windows of opportunity and current impediments for collaborative change. DISC-based monitoring is a promising strategy enabling project managers and social entrepreneurs to plan change management strategies systematically.</p
