How is environmental proactivity accomplished? Drivers and barriers in firms' pro-environmental change process
The contaminating effects of economic activity and the scarcity of natural resources has led firms to a situation in which corporate strategy has been compromised by environmental issues. The objective of this paper is to analyse some of the factors determining the pro-environmental change process by considering the drivers encouraging firms to progress in environmental protection and the barriers that curb this progress. Using a structural equation model implemented on a sample of 303 firms, our results confirm a direct and positive effect of stakeholder pressure and of the expectations of obtaining competitive advantages from the pro-environmental change process. The results also confirmed the indirect effect of stakeholder pressure on pro-environmental change through managers'' expectations of obtaining competitive advantages, which play a mediating role in the firm''s response. Although managers interpret the barriers we have studied as obstacles to adopting environmental protection measures, they do not prevent any firm from reaching advanced levels of pro-environmental change
Poly (lactic acid)/D-limonene/ZnO bio-nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties
Antimicrobial films of poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/D-limonene/zinc oxide (ZnO)-based bio-nanocomposites were prepared via melt compounding and subsequent thermocompression. D-limonene was incorporated at concentrations of 10 or 20 wt%, and ZnO pure nanoparticles and those organically modified with oleic acid (O-ZnO), with an average diameter of 13.5 nm, were included at concentrations of 3, 5, and 8 wt%. The plasticizing effect of D-Limonene was corroborated by a decrease in the glass transition temperature compared to pure PLA. The presence of ZnO and O-ZnO in the PLA matrix promoted a slight increase in the degree of crystallinity due to its nucleant performance. Although ZnO and O-ZnO induced lower thermal stability and slightly decreased microhardness in the composites, excellent antimicrobial performance was demonstrated. Both ZnO and O-ZnO nanocomposites reached 99.9% of effectiveness for nanoparticles content above 5 wt%, regardless of the source of irradiation, D-limonene concentration, and nanoparticle modification. Cuerpo extraño intra-abdominal postquirúrgico simulador de neoplasia. Presentación de un caso y revisión de la bibliografía
Introducción: los textilomas son materiales textiles quirúrgicos que permanecen en el abdomen tras cirugías previas. Resulta muy dificil evaluar su incidencia debído a las implicaciones médico legales de ahí el interés en la publicación de este tipo de patología
Caso clínico: mujer de 76 años a la que se había realizado una histerectomía más doble anexectomía 6 meses antes de su ingreso en nuestro hospital, al parecer sin complicaciones perioperatorias. Cuando fue valorada en nuestro hospital presentaba cuadro clínico que simulaba una neoplasia maligna. En nuestro caso, la enferma tenía signos y síntomas propios de una neoplasia intra abdominal avanzada, tales como: anemia de procesos crónicos, pérdida importante de peso y tumor abdominal palpable. El procedimiento diagnóstico combinó tomografía computada y colonoscopia, objetivando como causa del cuadro clínico la presencia de textiloma intra abdominal. La paciente fue intervenida precisando 3 resecciones intestinales para extraer el cuerpo extraño, siendo el postoperatorio satisfactorio y permanece asintomática hasta la fecha.
Conclusión: los textilomas intra-abdominales son excepcionales, si bien su diagnóstico debe realizarse con pruebas de imagen, y si se sospecha neoplasia digestivas, estudios endoscópicos. El diagnóstico diferencial prioritario deberá realizarse con tumores malignos intra abdominales.
Introduction: Gossypibomas or textilomas are materials remain in the abdomen after surgery. It is very difficult to assess its impact due to medico-legal implications, hence the interest in the publication of this type of pathology.
Clinical case: Women of 76 years who had undergone a hysterectomy more double anexectomy 6 months before admission to our hospital, apparently without perioperative complications. When she was assessed in our hospital had a clinical picture simulating a malignancy. In our case, the patient had signs and symptoms of advanced intra-abdominal malignancy, such as anemia of chronic, significant weight loss and palpable abdominal mass. The diagnostic procedure combined computed tomography and colonoscopy, aiming to cause the signs of intra-abdominal gossypiboma. The patient was operated 3 bowel resections pointing to extract the foreign body, with satisfactory postoperative and remaining asymptomatic till date.
Conclusion: Intra-abdominal gossypibomas are exceptional, although the diagnosis is made through imaging and, if suspected GI neoplasm, endoscopic studies. The primary differential diagnosis must be made with intra-abdominal malignancies
Label-free segmentation of co-cultured cells on a nanotopographical gradient
The function and fate of cells is influenced by many different factors, one of which is surface topography of the support culture substrate. Systematic studies of nanotopography and cell response have typically been limited to single cell types and a small set of topographical variations. Here, we show a radical expansion of experimental throughput using automated detection, measurement, and classification of co-cultured cells on a nanopillar array where feature height changes continuously from planar to 250 nm over 9 mm. Individual cells are identified and characterized by more than 200 descriptors, which are used to construct a set of rules for label-free segmentation into individual cell types. Using this approach we can achieve label-free segmentation with 84% confidence across large image data sets and suggest optimized surface parameters for nanostructuring of implant devices such as vascular stents
Presence of Mycoplasma fermentans in the bloodstream of Mexican patients with rheumatoid arthritis and IgM and IgG antibodies against whole microorganism
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Increasing evidence incriminates bacteria, especially <it>Mycoplasma fermentans</it>, as possible arthritogenic agents in humans. The purpose of this study was to investigate <it>M. fermentans </it>in the bloodstream of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two hundred and nineteen blood samples from patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, and healthy individuals were screened by bacterial culture and direct PCR in order to detect mycoplasmas; IgM and IgG against <it>M. fermentans </it>PG18 were also detected by ELISA and Immunoblotting assays in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and healthy individuals.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Blood samples from patients with antiphospholipid syndrome and healthy individuals were negative for mycoplasma by culture or direct PCR. In blood samples from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus were detected by direct PCR <it>M. fermentans </it>in 2/50 (2%), <it>M. hominis </it>in 2/50 (2%) and <it>U. urealyticum </it>in 1/50 (0.5%). In patients with RA <it>M. fermentans </it>was detected by culture in 13/87 blood samples and in 13/87 by direct PCR, however, there was only concordance between culture and direct PCR in six samples, so <it>M. fermentans </it>was detected in 20/87(23%) of the blood samples from patients with RA by either culture or PCR. Antibody-specific ELISA assay to <it>M. fermentans </it>PG18 was done, IgM was detected in sera from 40/87 patients with RA and in sera of 7/67 control individuals, IgG was detected in sera from 48/87 RA patients and in sera from 7/67 healthy individuals. Antibody-specific immunoblotting to <it>M. fermentans </it>PG18 showed IgM in sera from 35/87 patients with RA and in sera from 4/67 healthy individuals, IgG was detected in sera from 34/87 patients and in sera from 5/67 healthy individuals.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings show that only <it>M. fermentans </it>produce bacteremia in a high percentage of patients with RA. This finding is similar to those reported in the literature. IgM and IgG against <it>M. fermentans </it>PG18 were more frequent in patients with RA than healthy individuals.</p
Gold Nanoparticles Generated in Ethosome Bilayers, As Revealed by Cryo-Electron-Tomography
Gold nanoparticles have been synthesized inside ethosomes, vesicles composed
of phospholipid, ethanol and water, which could be very efficient not only in
delivery probes to the skin but also as diagnostic and therapeutic multimodal
agents. High efficiency encapsulation of gold nanoparticles is achieved by a
simple strategy: the nanoparticles synthesis occurs simultaneously with the
ethosomes formation, in the absence of any undesirable reducing agents. A
three-dimensional reconstruction of a gold-embedded ethosome generated by
cryoelectron tomography reveals that the gold particle is localized inside the
lipid bilayer, leaving the ethosome surface and core free for further
functionalization. The resulting gold nanoparticles are homogeneous in size and
shape and, depending on synthesis temperature, the size ranges from 10 to 20
nm, as revealed by TEM. The ethosome-nanoparticles hybrids size has been
investigated by means of dynamic light scattering and has been found to vary
with temperature and gold salt concentration from 700 to 400 nm. Gold
nanoparticles encapsulated ethosomes offer a versatile platform for the
enhancement of pharmacological efficacy in transdermal and dermal delivery

Significant differences in the use of healthcare resources of native-born and foreign born in Spain
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In the last decade, the number of foreign residents in Spain has doubled and it has become one of the countries in the European Union with the highest number of immigrants There is no doubt that the health of the immigrant population has become a relevant subject from the point of view of public healthcare. Our study aimed at describing the potential inequalities in the use of healthcare resources and in the lifestyles of the resident immigrant population of Spain.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cross-sectional, epidemiological study from the Spanish National Health Survey (NHS) in 2006, from the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs. We have worked with individualized secondary data, collected in the Spanish National Health Survey carried out in 2006 and 2007 (SNHS-06), from the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs. The format of the SNHS-06 has been adapted to the requirements of the European project for the carrying out of health surveys.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The economic immigrant population resident in Spain, present diseases that are similar to those of the indigenous population. The immigrant population shows significantly lower values in the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and physical activity (OR = 0.76; CI 95%: 0.65–0.89, they nonetheless perceive their health condition as worse than that reported by the autochthonous population (OR = 1.63, CI 95%: 1.34–1.97). The probability of the immigrant population using emergency services in the last 12 months was significantly greater than that of the autochthonous population (OR = 1.31, CI 95%: 1.12–1.54). This situation repeats itself when analyzing hospitalization data, with values of probability of being hospitalized greater among immigrants (OR = 1.39, CI 95%: 1.07–1.81).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The economic immigrants have better parameters in relation to lifestyles, but they have a poor perception of their health. Despite the fact that immigrant population shows higher percentages of emergency attendance and hospitalization than the indigenous population, with respect to the use of healthcare resources, their usage of healthcare resources such as drugs, influenza vaccinations or visits to the dentist is lower.</p
Ibero-American Consensus on Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners: Safety, Nutritional Aspects and Benefits in Food and Beverages
International scientific experts in food, nutrition, dietetics, endocrinology, physical activity, paediatrics, nursing, toxicology and public health met in Lisbon on 2-4 July 2017 to develop a Consensus on the use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS) as substitutes for sugars and other caloric sweeteners. LNCS are food additives that are broadly used as sugar substitutes to sweeten foods and beverages with the addition of fewer or no calories. They are also used in medicines, health-care products, such as toothpaste, and food supplements. The goal of this Consensus was to provide a useful, evidence-based, point of reference to assist in efforts to reduce free sugars consumption in line with current international public health recommendations. Participating experts in the Lisbon Consensus analysed and evaluated the evidence in relation to the role of LNCS in food safety, their regulation and the nutritional and dietary aspects of their use in foods and beverages. The conclusions of this Consensus were: (1) LNCS are some of the most extensively evaluated dietary constituents, and their safety has been reviewed and confirmed by regulatory bodies globally including the World Health Organisation, the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority; (2) Consumer education, which is based on the most robust scientific evidence and regulatory processes, on the use of products containing LNCS should be strengthened in a comprehensive and objective way; (3) The use of LNCS in weight reduction programmes that involve replacing caloric sweeteners with LNCS in the context of structured diet plans may favour sustainable weight reduction. Furthermore, their use in diabetes management programmes may contribute to a better glycaemic control in patients, albeit with modest results. LNCS also provide dental health benefits when used in place of free sugars; (4) It is proposed that foods and beverages with LNCS could be included in dietary guidelines as alternative options to products sweetened with free sugars; (5) Continued education of health professionals is required, since they are a key source of information on issues related to food and health for both the general population and patients.
