    An explicit expression of the canonical 8-form on a Riemannian manifold with a Spin(9)-structure, in terms of the nine local symmetric involutions involved, is given. The list of explicit expressions of all the canonical forms related to Berger's list of holonomy groups is thus completed. Moreover, some results on Spin(9)-structures as G-structures defined by a tensor and on the curvature tensor of the Cayley planes, are obtained

    RENO, a European Postmarket Surveillance Registry, confirms effectiveness of coronary brachytheraypy in routine clinical practice.

    Purpose: To assess, by a European registry trial, the clinical event rate in patients with discrete stenotic lesions of coronary arteries (de novo or restenotic) in single or multiple vessels (native or bypass grafts) treated with -radiation. Methods and Materials: Between April 1999 and September 2000, 1098 consecutive patients treated in 46 centers in Europe and the Middle East with the Novoste Beta-Cath System were included in Registry Novoste (RENO). Results: Six-month follow-up data were obtained for 1085 patients. Of 1174 target lesions, 94.1% were located in native vessels and 5.9% in a bypass graft; 17.7% were de novo lesions, 4.1% were restenotic, and 77.7% were in-stent restenotic lesions. Intravascular brachytherapy was technically successful in 95.9% of lesions. Multisegmental irradiation, using a manual pullback stepping maneuver to treat longer lesions, was used in 16.3% of the procedures. The in-hospital rate of major adverse cardiac events was 1.8%. At 6 months, the rate was 18.7%. Angiographic follow-up was available for 70.4% of the patients. Nonocclusive restenosis was seen in 18.8% and total occlusion in 5.7% of patients. A combined end point for late (30–180 days) definitive or suspected target vessel closure was reached in 5.4%, but with only 2% of clinical events. Multivariate analysis was performed for major adverse cardiac events and late thrombosis. Conclusion: Data obtained from the multicenter RENO registry study, derived from a large cohort of unselected consecutive patients, suggest that the good results of recent randomized controlled clinical trials can be replicated in routine clinical practice. © 2003 Elsevier Science Inc

    The streamwater microbiome encodes hydrologic data across scales

    Many fundamental questions in hydrology remain unanswered due to the limited information that can be extracted from existing data sources. Microbial communities constitute a novel type of environmental data, as they are comprised of many thousands of taxonomically and functionally diverse groups known to respond to both biotic and abiotic environmental factors. As such, these microscale communities reflect a range of macroscale conditions and characteristics, some of which also drive hydrologic regimes. Here, we assess the extent to which streamwater microbial communities (as characterized by 16S gene amplicon sequence abundance) encode information about catchment hydrology across scales. We analyzed 64 summer streamwater DNA samples collected from subcatchments within the Willamette, Deschutes, and John Day river basins in Oregon, USA, which range 0.03–29,000 km2 in area and 343–2334 mm/year of precipitation. We applied information theory to quantify the breadth and depth of information about common hydrologic metrics encoded within microbial taxa. Of the 256 microbial taxa that spanned all three watersheds, we found 9.6 % (24.5/256) of taxa, on average, shared information with a given hydrologic metric, with a median 15.6 % (range = 12.4–49.2 %) reduction in uncertainty of that metric based on knowledge of the microbial biogeography. All of the hydrologic metrics we assessed, including daily discharge at different time lags, mean monthly discharge, and seasonal high and low flow durations were encoded within the microbial community. Summer microbial taxa shared the most information with winter mean flows. Our study demonstrates quantifiable relationships between streamwater microbial taxa and hydrologic metrics at different scales, likely resulting from the integration of multiple overlapping drivers of each. Streamwater microbial communities are rich sources of information that may contribute fresh insight to unresolved hydrologic questions

    On the geometry of closed G2-structure

    We give an answer to a question posed recently by R.Bryant, namely we show that a compact 7-dimensional manifold equipped with a G2-structure with closed fundamental form is Einstein if and only if the Riemannian holonomy of the induced metric is contained in G2. This could be considered to be a G2 analogue of the Goldberg conjecture in almost Kahler geometry. The result was generalized by R.L.Bryant to closed G2-structures with too tightly pinched Ricci tensor. We extend it in another direction proving that a compact G2-manifold with closed fundamental form and divergence-free Weyl tensor is a G2-manifold with parallel fundamental form. We introduce a second symmetric Ricci-type tensor and show that Einstein conditions applied to the two Ricci tensors on a closed G2-structure again imply that the induced metric has holonomy group contained in G2.Comment: 14 pages, the Einstein condition in the assumptions of the Main theorem is generalized to the assumption that the Weyl tensor is divergence-free, clarity improved, typos correcte

    Two-band random matrices

    Spectral correlations in unitary invariant, non-Gaussian ensembles of large random matrices possessing an eigenvalue gap are studied within the framework of the orthogonal polynomial technique. Both local and global characteristics of spectra are directly reconstructed from the recurrence equation for orthogonal polynomials associated with a given random matrix ensemble. It is established that an eigenvalue gap does not affect the local eigenvalue correlations which follow the universal sine and the universal multicritical laws in the bulk and soft-edge scaling limits, respectively. By contrast, global smoothed eigenvalue correlations do reflect the presence of a gap, and are shown to satisfy a new universal law exhibiting a sharp dependence on the odd/even dimension of random matrices whose spectra are bounded. In the case of unbounded spectrum, the corresponding universal `density-density' correlator is conjectured to be generic for chaotic systems with a forbidden gap and broken time reversal symmetry.Comment: 12 pages (latex), references added, discussion enlarge

    Efficacy of beta radiation in prevention of post-angioplasty restenosis

    Restenosis remains a major limitation of coronary angioplasty in spite of major advances in techniques and technology. Recent studies have demonstrated that ionizing radiation may limit the degree of this problem. Gamma radiation has been shown to be effective in reducing in stent restenosis in humans, and beta radiation following encouraging results in animals has been shown to be feasible in humans. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of a 5 F non-centered catheter to deliver beta radiation emitting seeds to the lesion site post angioplasty and its effect on restenosis. Following successful angioplasty, patients were randomized to treatment with 12, 14 or 16 Gy at the angioplasty site. This was delivered with a 5 F non-centered catheter. Twelve beta radiation emitting seeds (90Sr/Y) were delivered to an area 3 cm in length to cover the angioplasty site. Angiographic follow-up was performed at 6 months. Baseline and follow-up angiograms were performed by blinded investigators at a core laboratory. This interim report comprises the first 35 patients to complete 6-month angiographic follow-up. There were no major radiation incidents. Four patients had evidence of angiographic restenosis. The MLD (mm) and percent stenosis were 0.77 +/- 0.27/72.5 +/- 8.6 pre angioplasty, 2.08 +/- 0.4/25.7 +/- 9.8 post angioplasty and radiation and 2.05 +/- 0.59/25.7 +/- 19.8 at follow-up respectively. CONCLUSION: Beta radiation can be feasibly and safely delivered post coronary angioplasty with a very encouraging reduction of restenosis

    Elevated CO<sub>2</sub> does not increase eucalypt forest productivity on a low-phosphorus soil

    Rising atmospheric CO2 stimulates photosynthesis and productivity of forests, offsetting CO2 emissions. Elevated CO2 experiments in temperate planted forests yielded ~23% increases in productivity over the initial years. Whether similar CO2 stimulation occurs in mature evergreen broadleaved forests on low-phosphorus (P) soils is unknown, largely due to lack of experimental evidence. This knowledge gap creates major uncertainties in future climate projections as a large part of the tropics is P-limited. Here,we increased atmospheric CO2 concentration in a mature broadleaved evergreen eucalypt forest for three years, in the first large-scale experiment on a P-limited site. We show that tree growth and other aboveground productivity components did not significantly increase in response to elevated CO2 in three years, despite a sustained 19% increase in leaf photosynthesis. Moreover, tree growth in ambient CO2 was strongly P-limited and increased by ~35% with added phosphorus. The findings suggest that P availability may potentially constrain CO2-enhanced productivity in P-limited forests; hence, future atmospheric CO2 trajectories may be higher than predicted by some models. As a result, coupled climate-carbon models should incorporate both nitrogen and phosphorus limitations to vegetation productivity in estimating future carbon sinks
