    Planning forest recreation: environmental economic instruments and the public participation

    In Portugal there is a growing demand for natural areas that provide a wide range of outdoor recreation. This paper focuses on the particular case of the Mata Nacional de Leiria (Leiria National Forest). This is a pine tree forest with 11,000 hectares and eight centuries of history. It has always been a public forest with open access to everyone, a fact that contributes to different kinds of use and benefits (walking, cycling, picnics, collecting firewood, fruits and berries, and other recreation activities). The proximity to a major urban and industrial centre, on one hand, and to a very popular beach coast, on the other, makes this a resource that is widely used by both residents and visitors. In the future there is the possibility of implementing a set of actions to improve forest amenities and recreation, and later the emergence of environmental tourism activities and equipment. In this context, we want to know the economic valuation that actual users attach to these recreation improvements, but also realize their preferences and opinions regarding this project. For this purpose we designed, tested and applied a double bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation questionnaire. The results presented in this paper focus on responses to attitudinal and follow-up questions. More than 70% of respondents have positively assessed the proposed improvements to the study area and about 40% enhanced their personal opinion on the type of interventions that they consider most appropriate. Answers focus the priority areas of intervention in the Mata Nacional de Leiria, the main concerns in its development, the type of actions that should (and should not) be implemented, respondents willingness to actively take part and, also, what the public authorities' role should be. At this stage, where Mata Nacional de Leiria is being considered in terms of future recreation and tourism offers, the results obtained provide important contributions and enhance the contingent valuation survey as a tool to support recreation planning, promoting public participation and the political decision-making process

    Structure evolution and Properties of TiAlCN/VCN Coatings Deposited by Reactive HIPIMS

    2.5 µm thick TiAlCN/VCN coatings were deposited by a reactive High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) process. Cross-sectional TEM showed gradual evolution of the structure of the coating with thickness. The initial structure is a nanoscale multilayer with sharp interlayer interfaces. This transforms to nanocomposite of TiAlCN and VCN nanocrystalline grains surrounded by a C-rich tissue phase and finally changes to an amorphous carbon rich Me-C phase. In contrast deposition in similar conditions using standard magnetron sputtering produces a well-defined nanoscale multilayer structure. Depth profiling by AES showed that the carbon content in the HIPIMS coating gradually increased from 25% at the coating substrate interface to 70% at the top thus supporting the TEM observations. Energy-resolved mass spectrometry revealed that HIPIMS plasma is a factor of 10 richer in C1+ ions, and therefore more reactive, as compared to the plasma generated by standard magnetron discharge at the same conditions. The peculiar structure evolution in HIPIMS is discussed in relation to target poisoning effect and carbon outward diffusion during coating growth. Highly abrasive AlSi9Cu1 alloy was dry machined using TiAlCN/VCN coated 25 mm diameter end mills to investigate the coating-work piece material interaction. Green (532nm excitation) and ultraviolet (325 nm excitation) Raman spectroscopy was employed to identify the phase composition of the built up material on the cutting edge and chip (swarf) surfaces produced during machining. These analyses revealed formation of lubricious Magnèli phases namely V2O5 and graphitic carbon as well as highly abrasive SiO2 and mixed (AlSi)O thus shedding light on the wear processes and coating tribological behaviour during machining

    Mental health and well-being of migrant populations in Portugal two years after the COVID-19 pandemic

    In Portugal, like in other European countries, the COVID-19 pandemic aggravated the risk of poverty and social exclusion faced by migrants. This study aimed to assess mental health and well-being, and their social determinants, among Brazilian and Cape Verdean immigrant populations two years after the COVID-19 pandemic while exploring the role of positive psychological factors such as resilience and perceived social support. We conducted a cross-sectional survey combining online and face-to-face questionnaires for data collection between February and November 2022 on dimensions of mental health considered potentially relevant to the post-pandemic context: psychological distress, anxiety, and depression. Overall, 604 immigrants were included (322 Brazilian and 282 Cape Verdean); 58.5% of those surveyed were women and 41.5% were men. The results revealed that gender (being a woman) was associated with both psychological distress and depression, higher education was associated with anxiety, and that, for the three mental health dimensions under analysis, the perception of discrimination and resilience were negative and positive predictors, respectively. Findings can inform the design and implementation of relevant public mental health promotion programs with a focus on equity targeted to the general population. Such programs would help to address the psychological and social impacts of this long-term, insidious global pandemic that has challenged governments, health care systems, health care professionals, individuals, families, and communities worldwide.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Fertility, migration and acculturation (FEMINA): a research protocol for studying intersectional sexual and reproductive health inequalities.

    Background: The existing knowledge on the interplay between reproductive and sexual health, migration and acculturation is recent and inconsistent, particularly on the sociocultural motives and constraints regarding fertility. Therefore, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) surveys are needed to provide accurate and comparable indicators to identify and address SRH inequalities, with specific focus on under researched aspects, such as the interrelation between migration and gender. FEMINA (FErtility, MIgratioN and Acculturation) aims to investigate intersectional SRH inequalities among Cape Verdean immigrant and Portuguese native families and how they impact on fertility in Portugal. This study will use a comprehensive approach exploring simultaneously the components of SRH, namely regarding identities, perceptions and practices of both women and men among lay people and relevant experts and stakeholders. The project has three main goals: 1) to identify social determinants of SRH among Cape Verdean immigrant and Portuguese native men and women of reproductive age; 2) to gain understanding of the diversity of the sexual and reproductive experiences and expectations of Cape Verdean immigrant and Portuguese native men and women of reproductive age, considering the singularities of their migratory, social and family dynamics; and 3) to produce recommendations for policy makers, employers and service providers on how to better address the SRH needs of Portuguese-born and immigrant populations. Methods: The study will address these goals using a mixed methods approach, including: a cross-sectional telephone survey with a probabilistic sample of 600 Cape Verdean immigrant and 600 Portuguese native women and men (women aged 18 to 49 and men aged 18 to 54), residents of the Greater Lisbon Area; a qualitative research through in-depth interviews with a subsample of 30 Cape Verdean immigrants and 30 Portuguese native men and women; and a Delphi technique for finding consensus on good practices in SRH for the entire population with a special emphasis on immigrants, namely extra-EU migrants. Discussion: Data will be used to produce a comprehensive set of indicators to monitor SRH in Portugal, to foster a greater understanding of its specificities and challenges to policy and decision makers, and to provide targeted recommendations to promote inclusive and migrant sensitive SRH services.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    This paper reports the modelling of CCP-RF discharges (13.56 MHz) in pure nitrogen, produced within a cylindrical parallel-plate reactor, similar to a GEC reference cell surrounded by a lateral grounded grid, at 0.1-2 mbar pressures and 10-50 W coupled powers. This study is a first step in simulating Titan’s chemistry at laboratory scale, using the PAMPRE experiment.     International mobility for study purposes: Flows and distribution of CPLP students in higher education and Portuguese territory

    O estudo analisa o posicionamento de Portugal nos fluxos de mobilidade internacional por motivos de estudo, num processo que se constrói e consolida, sobretudo, no âmbito dos acordos de cooperação da CPLP. O objetivo é identificar os perfis e características dos estudantes estrangeiros que frequentam o ensino superior em Portugal, sobretudo os provenientes de países da CPLP, detalhar os fluxos e as proveniências, bem como a sua distribuição pelas instituições de ensino superior e pelo território nacional, discutindo os potenciais benefícios da sua integração para as diferentes tipologias de instituições/territórios. O estudo recorre a dados oficiais de natureza censitária produzidos pela DGEEC, relativos a 2012-2021. A análise demonstra a presença crescente de estudantes internacionais nas IES portuguesas, num processo facilitado pela alteração do quadro institucional no âmbito dos acordos de cooperação. No elenco de razões para a adesão das IES a essa tendência, assinalam-se quer as possibilidades de captação de novos recursos financeiros através das prestações de propinas, quer elementos simbólicos de prestígio das IES nos rankings nacionais e internacionais, além do potencial de dinamismo e inovação que resulta da confluência no campus das IES de estudantes com referenciais de experiência e orientações culturais diferenciadas.     A Monte Carlo simulation of ion transport at finite temperatures

    We have developed a Monte Carlo simulation for ion transport in hot background gases, which is an alternative way of solving the corresponding Boltzmann equation that determines the distribution function of ions. We consider the limit of low ion densities when the distribution function of the background gas remains unchanged due to collision with ions. A special attention has been paid to properly treat the thermal motion of the host gas particles and their influence on ions, which is very important at low electric fields, when the mean ion energy is comparable to the thermal energy of the host gas. We found the conditional probability distribution of gas velocities that correspond to an ion of specific velocity which collides with a gas particle. Also, we have derived exact analytical formulas for piecewise calculation of the collision frequency integrals. We address the cases when the background gas is monocomponent and when it is a mixture of different gases. The developed techniques described here are required for Monte Carlo simulations of ion transport and for hybrid models of non-equilibrium plasmas. The range of energies where it is necessary to apply the technique has been defined. The results we obtained are in excellent agreement with the existing ones obtained by complementary methods. Having verified our algorithm, we were able to produce calculations for Ar+^+ ions in Ar and propose them as a new benchmark for thermal effects. The developed method is widely applicable for solving the Boltzmann equation that appears in many different contexts in physics.Comment: 14 page
