Resisting Memory: The Politics of Memorialisation in Post-conflict Northern Ireland
This article explores practices of memorialisation in post-conflict society, through the case study of the James McCurrie Robert Neill Memorial Garden, located in East Belfast, which has been vandalised on a number of occasions. It notes the similarities between these attacks and Jenny Edkins’ theorisation of resistance at the sites of state memory. In the context of Northern Ireland, however, such resistance serves only to replicate patterns of division, as they seek to re-assert competing historical claims obscured by the memorial. The article therefore turns to the work of Jacques Derrida in order to employ a deconstructive ‘double reading’ of the memorial, which avoids the trap of treating the past as something that can be instrumentally utilised in the present. This deconstructive reading is undertaken in order to suggest a form of resistance to memorialisation which does more than replicate patterns of division through essentialised versions of history

The mammalian respiratory system and critical windows of exposure for children's health.
The respiratory system is a complex organ system composed of multiple cell types involved in a variety of functions. The development of the respiratory system occurs from embryogenesis to adult life, passing through several distinct stages of maturation and growth. We review embryonic, fetal, and postnatal phases of lung development. We also discuss branching morphogenesis and cellular differentiation of the respiratory system, as well as the postnatal development of xenobiotic metabolizing systems within the lungs. Exposure of the respiratory system to a wide range of chemicals and environmental toxicants during perinatal life has the potential to significantly affect the maturation, growth, and function of this organ system. Although the potential targets for exposure to toxic factors are currently not known, they are likely to affect critical molecular signals expressed during distinct stages of lung development. The effects of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke during critical windows of perinatal growth are provided as an example leading to altered cellular and physiological function of the lungs. An understanding of critical windows of exposure of the respiratory system on children's health requires consideration that lung development is a multistep process and cannot be based on studies in adults
Small and beautiful? The programme of activities and the least developed countries
Most carbon abatement projects under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) have been implemented in rapidly industrializing countries, notably China and India. To support small carbon abatement projects and to promote decarbonization in the least developed countries, the Programme of Activities (PoA) modality was introduced. Are the determinants of project implementation different under the PoA from those of conventional CDM projects? To answer this question, we conduct a statistical analysis of the global distribution of CDM projects and PoAs during the years 2007–2012. In regard to country size, large countries clearly dominate both the CDM and PoA, suggesting that the PoA may do only little to facilitate project implementation in small countries. However, the number of PoAs has a strong negative association with a country's corruption level, while the importance of corruption for the CDM is much smaller. Moreover, per capita income has no effect on PoA implementation, while high wealth levels have a weak positive effect on CDM projects. Thus, the PoA modality seems to promote sustainable development in poor countries that have exceeded a certain threshold of good governance. This article argues that moving beyond the ethnicisation of politics in BiH enacted by the DPA can be achieved by challenging the understandings of the war which informs the DPA while simultaneously challenging the effects of these understandings in the present. By advancing what I term a ‘deconstructive conclusion’ of the DPA, this article demonstrates the practical utility of Jacques Derrida’s thought for engaging with the legacy of war in BiH
Second-hand Smoke Increases Nitric Oxide and Alters the IgE Response in a Murine Model of Allergic Aspergillosis
This study was performed to determine the effects of environmental
tobacco smoke (ETS) on nitric oxide (NO) and immunoglobulin (Ig) production in
a murine model of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Adult
BALB/c mice were exposed to aged and diluted sidestream cigarette smoke
from day 0 through day 43 to simulate “second-hand
smoke”. During exposure,
mice were sensitized to soluble Aspergillus fumigatus (Af)
antigen intranasally
between day 14 and 24. All Af sensitized mice in ambient air (Af + AIR) made
elevated levels of IgE, IgG1, IgM, IgG2a and IgA. Af sensitized mice housed in
ETS (Af + ETS) made similar levels of immunoglobulins except for IgE that was
significantly reduced in the serum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). However,
immunohistochemical evaluation of the lung revealed a marked accumulation of
IgE positive cells in the lung parenchyma of these Af + ETS mice. LPS stimulation
of BAL cells revealed elevated levels of NO in the Af + AIR group, which was further
enhanced in the Af+ETS group. In vitro restimulation of the BAL cells on day 45
showed a TH0 response with elevated levels of IL3, 4, 5, 10 and IFN-γ. However,
by day 28 the response shifted such that TH2 cytokines increased while
IFN-γ decreased. The Af + ETS group showed markedly reduced levels in all
cytokines tested, including the inflammatory cytokine IL6, when compared to
the Af+AIR group. These results demonstrate that ETS affects ABPA by further
enhancing the NO production and reduces
the TH2 and the inflammatory cytokines while altering the pattern of IgE responses
Daily mood, partner support, sexual interest, and sexual activity among adolescent women

Methods: Women (ages 14 – 17 at enrollment; N=146) enrolled from one of three adolescent primary care clinics completed up to five 84-day diaries over a 27-month period. The diaries assessed partner interactions, sexual activity, substance use and mood. Partner-specific measures assessed on each day included partner emotional support (4 items; alpha = 0.94), argument with a partner (no/yes) and coitus (no/yes). Within-day measures assessed marijuana use (no/yes), Positive Mood (3-items; alpha = 0. 86); Negative Mood (3-items; alpha = 0.82) and Sexual Interest (1-item). Lagged measures of mood and sexual activity were included in multivariate models to control for recent mood and sexual behavior effects on current day mood and coitus. Two main analyses were conducted: coitus as a predictor of positive and negative mood; and the role of positive and negative mood as predictors of coitus. Analyses were conducted by multivariate mixed effect regression and mixed effect logistic regression models.
Results: Data represent 28,376 days from 146 participants. The average number of diary days was 194 days per participant. Sexual activity was reported on 8.3% of days, with condoms used for 27.0% of these coital events. Marijuana was used on 11% of days. Significant predictors of positive mood on a given day included partner support, marijuana use, and coitus. Negative mood was associated with having an argument with a partner and with prior day coitus. Predictors of coitus on a given day included age (Odds ratio = 1.22), increased coital frequency in previous week (OR = 1.49), coitus on the previous day (1.21), increased same-day sexual interest (OR = 2.8) and decreased same-day negative mood (OR = 0.92).
Conclusions: The data demonstrate complex associations of sexual interest, mood, partner interactions and sexual activity
Lava channel formation during the 2001 eruption on Mount Etna: evidence for mechanical erosion
We report the direct observation of a peculiar lava channel that was formed
near the base of a parasitic cone during the 2001 eruption on Mount Etna.
Erosive processes by flowing lava are commonly attributed to thermal erosion.
However, field evidence strongly suggests that models of thermal erosion cannot
explain the formation of this channel. Here, we put forward the idea that the
essential erosion mechanism was abrasive wear. By applying a simple model from
tribology we demonstrate that the available data agree favorably with our
hypothesis. Consequently, we propose that erosional processes resembling the
wear phenomena in glacial erosion are possible in a volcanic environment.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
