Spintessence: a possible candidate as a driver of the late time cosmic acceleration
In this paper, it is shown completely analytically that a spintessence model
can very well serve the purpose of providing an early deceleration and the
present day acceleration.Comment: 5 pages, no figure. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics and

The Nearby Supernova Factory
The Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory) is an ambitious project to find and
study in detail approximately 300 nearby Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) at
redshifts 0.03<z<0.08. This program will provide an exceptional data set of
well-studied SNe in the nearby smooth Hubble flow that can be used as
calibration for the current and future programs designed to use SNe to measure
the cosmological parameters. The first key ingredient for this program is a
reliable supply of Hubble-flow SNe systematically discovered in unprecedented
numbers using the same techniques as those used in distant SNe searches. In
2002, 35 SNe were found using our test-bed pipeline for automated SN search and
discovery. The pipeline uses images from the asteroid search conducted by the
Near Earth Asteroid Tracking group at JPL. Improvements in our subtraction
techniques and analysis have allowed us to increase our effective SN discovery
rate to ~12 SNe/month in 2003.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures to be published in New Astronomy Review
Dynamics of Massive Scalar Fields in dS Space and the dS/CFT Correspondence
Global geometric properties of dS space are presented explicitly in various
coordinates. A Robertson-Walker like metric is deduced, which is convenient to
be used in study of dynamics in dS space. Singularities of wavefunctions of
massive scalar fields at boundary are demonstrated. A bulk-boundary propagator
is constructed by making use of the solutions of equations of motion. The
dS/CFT correspondence and the Strominger's mass bound is shown.Comment: latex, 14 pages and 3 figure
Modified Chaplygin Gas and Constraints on its B parameter from CDM and UDME Cosmological models
We study Modified Chaplygin Gas (MCG) as a candidate for dark energy and
predict the values of parameters of the gas for a physically viable
cosmological model. The equation of state of MCG () involves three parameters: , and . The
permitted values of these parameters are determined with the help of
dimensionless age parameter () and Data. Specifically we
study the allowed ranges of values of B parameter in terms of and
( is defined in terms of the constants in the theory). We
explore the constraints of the parameters in Cold Dark Matter(CDM) model and
UDME(Unified Dark Matter Energy) model respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 10 fig
Curvature Dependence of Peaks in the Cosmic Microwave Background Distribution
The widely cited formula for the multipole
number of the first Doppler peak is not even a crude approximation in the case
of greatest current interest, in which the cosmic mass density is less than the
vacuum energy density. For instance, with fixed at 0.3, the position
of any Doppler peak varies as near .Comment: 7 pages, Late
A late time acceleration of the universe with two scalar fields : many possibilities
In the present work, an attempt has been made to explain the recent cosmic
acceleration with two mutually interacting scalar fields, one being the
Brans-Dicke scalar field and the other a quintessence scalar field. Conditions
have been derived for which the quintessence scalar field has an early
oscillation and it grows during a later time to govern the dynamics of the
universe.Comment: 8 pages, no figures. Accepted for publication in Mod. Phys. Lett.
Can luminosity distance measurements probe the equation of state of dark energy
Distance measurements to Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at cosmological
distances indicate that the Universe is accelerating and that a large fraction
of the critical energy density exists in a component with negative pressure.
Various hypotheses on the nature of this ``dark energy'' can be tested via
their prediction for the equation of state of this component. If the dark
energy is due to a scalar field, its equation of state will in general vary
with time and is related to the potential of the field. We review the intrinsic
degeneracies of luminosity distance measurements and compute the expected
accuracies that can be obtained for the equation of state parameter from a
realistic high statistic SNe Ia experiment.Comment: 12 pages, 3 Postscript figures, use epsfig, amssymb, amsmath.

Physical therapy and deep brain stimulation in Parkinson’s Disease: Protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial
Abstract Background Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) reduces tremor, muscle stiffness, and bradykinesia in people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Walking speed, known to be reduced in PD, typically improves after surgery; however, other important aspects of gait may not improve. Furthermore, balance may worsen and falls may increase after STN-DBS. Thus, interventions to improve balance and gait could reduce morbidity and improve quality of life following STN-DBS. Physical therapy (PT) effectively improves balance and gait in people with PD, but studies on the effects of PT have not been extended to those treated with STN-DBS. As such, the efficacy, safety, and feasibility of PT in this population remain to be determined. The purpose of this pilot study is to address these unmet needs. We hypothesize that PT designed to target balance and gait impairment will be effective, safe, and feasible in this population. Methods/design Participants with PD treated with STN-DBS will be randomly assigned to either a PT or control group. Participants assigned to PT will complete an 8-week, twice-weekly PT program consisting of exercises designed to improve balance and gait. Control group participants will receive the current standard of care following STN-DBS, which does not include prescription of PT. The primary aim is to assess preliminary efficacy of PT on balance (Balance Evaluation Systems Test). A secondary aim is to assess efficacy of PT on gait (GAITRite instrumented walkway). Participants will be assessed OFF medication/OFF stimulation and ON medication/ON stimulation at baseline and at 8 and 12 weeks after baseline. Adverse events will be measured over the duration of the study, and adherence to PT will be measured to determine feasibility. Discussion To our knowledge, this will be the first study to explore the preliminary efficacy, safety, and feasibility of PT for individuals with PD with STN-DBS. If the study suggests potential efficacy, then this would justify larger trials to test effectiveness and safety of PT for those with PD with STN-DBS. Some FRW Models of Accelerating Universe with Dark Energy
The paper deals with a spatially homogeneous and isotropic FRW space-time
filled with perfect fluid and dark energy components. The two sources are
assumed to interact minimally, and therefore their energy momentum tensors are
conserved separately. A special law of variation for the Hubble parameter
proposed by Berman (1983) has been utilized to solve the field equations. The
Berman's law yields two explicit forms of the scale factor governing the FRW
space-time and constant values of deceleration parameter. The role of dark
energy with variable equation of state parameter has been studied in detail in
the evolution of FRW universe. It has been found that dark energy dominates the
universe at the present epoch, which is consistent with the observations. The
physical behavior of the universe is discussed in detail.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
de Sitter black hole with a conformally coupled scalar field in four dimensions
A four-dimensional black hole solution of the Einstein equations with a
positive cosmological constant, coupled to a conformal scalar field, is given.
There is a curvature singularity at the origin, and scalar field diverges
inside the event horizon. The electrically charged solution, which has a fixed
charge-to-mass ratio is also found. The quartic self-interacting coupling
becomes bounded in terms of Newton's and the cosmological constants.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, CECS style, energy conditions are discussed and
