    Bures distance as a measure of entanglement for symmetric two-mode Gaussian states

    We evaluate a Gaussian entanglement measure for a symmetric two-mode Gaussian state of the quantum electromagnetic field in terms of its Bures distance to the set of all separable Gaussian states. The required minimization procedure was considerably simplified by using the remarkable properties of the Uhlmann fidelity as well as the standard form II of the covariance matrix of a symmetric state. Our result for the Gaussian degree of entanglement measured by the Bures distance depends only on the smallest symplectic eigenvalue of the covariance matrix of the partially transposed density operator. It is thus consistent to the exact expression of the entanglement of formation for symmetric two-mode Gaussian states. This non-trivial agreement is specific to the Bures metric.Comment: published versio

    A rigorous sequential update strategy for parallel kinetic Monte Carlo simulation

    The kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) method is used in many scientific fields in applications involving rare-event transitions. Due to its discrete stochastic nature, efforts to parallelize kMC approaches often produce unbalanced time evolutions requiring complex implementations to ensure correct statistics. In the context of parallel kMC, the sequential update technique has shown promise by generating high quality distributions with high relative efficiencies for short-range systems. In this work, we provide an extension of the sequential update method in a parallel context that rigorously obeys detailed balance, which guarantees exact equilibrium statistics for all parallelization settings. Our approach also preserves nonequilibrium dynamics with minimal error for many parallelization settings, and can be used to achieve highly precise sampling

    Literary and political perspectives in Italian futurism : a study in the periodization of the works of F.T. Marinetti

    This study deals with the works of F. T. Marinetti between 1898 and 1938, giving special emphasis to the years 1909 to 1920, covering the 'periods eroico' of Futurism. I seek to illuminate the special relationship between Marinetti and Futurism which is the central topic of this study, beginning with the prelude to Futurism and continuing through its course until 1938. I trace the development in Marinetti of those ideas which he brought to Futurism and to this end I consider the literary and political background of the time in Italy and France, as well as examining Marinetti's own writings.I then trace the evolution of Futurism in both the literary and the political sphere and discuss its interaction with individuals and movements in the contemporary literary scene in Europe. With the outbreak of the First World War there is a clear watershed between the early Futurism and its·later manifestation, as issues come to the fore which will also dominate post-war Italian politics. As an experience with long-term effects on those involved, the war enjoys a prominent position in this study. It also provides the link between Futurism and Fascism, an association which is still a source of controversy today. The importance of this chapter in the history of the movement is reflected in its extensive discussion in this study.This study re-assesses the view of Marinetti and Futurism generally advanced.     Acoustically evoked potentials in two cephalopods inferred using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) approach

    It is still a matter of debate whether cephalopods can detect sound frequencies above 400 Hz. So far there is no proof for the detection of underwater sound above 400 Hz via a physiological approach. The controversy of whether cephalopods have a sound detection ability above 400 Hz was tested using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) approach, which has been successfully applied in fish, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles and birds. Using ABR we found that auditory evoked potentials can be obtained in the frequency range 400 to 1500 Hz (Sepiotheutis lessoniana) and 400 to 1000 Hz (Octopus vulgaris), respectively. The thresholds of S. lessoniana were generally lower than those of O. vulgaris

    We explore several models of QCD evolution equations simplified by considering only the rapidity dependence of dipole scattering amplitudes, while provisionally neglecting their dependence on transverse coordinates. Our main focus is on the equations that include the processes of pomeron splittings.     Diagnosing the Source Region of a Solar Burst on 26 September 2011 by Microwave Type III Pairs

    This work reports a peculiar and interesting train of microwave type III pair bursts in the impulsive rising phase of a solar flare on 2011 September 26. The observations include radio spectrometers at frequency of 0.80 - 2.00 GHz, hard X-ray (RHESSI and FERMI), EUV images of SWAP/PROBA-2 and magnetogram of HMI/SDO. By using a recently developed method (Tan et al. 2016a), we diagnosed the plasma density, temperature, plasma beta, magnetic field near the source region, the energy of energetic electrons and the distance between the acceleration region and the emission start sites of type III bursts. From the diagnostics, we find that: (1) The plasma density, temperature, magnetic field, and the distance between the acceleration region and the emission start sites almost have no obvious variations during the period of type III pair trains, while the energy of electrons has an obvious peak value which is consistent to the hard X-ray emission. (2) The plasma beta is much higher than an unity showing a highly dynamic process near the emission start site of type III bursts. (3) Although the reversed-slope type III branches drift slower at one order of magnitude than that of the normal type III branches, the related downgoing and upgoing electrons still could have same order of magnitude of energy. These facts indicate that both of the upgoing and downgoing electrons are possibly accelerated by similar mechanism and in a small source region. This diagnostics can help us to understand the microphysics in the source region of solar bursts.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Solar Physic
