    Scalar field localization on a brane with cosmological constant

    We address the localization of a scalar field, whose bulk-mass M is considered in a wide range including the tachyonic region,on a three-brane. The brane with non-zero cosmological constant λ\lambda is embedded in five dimensional bulk space. We find in this case that the trapped scalar could have mass mm which has an upper bound and expressed as m2=m02+αM2βλm^2=m_0^2+\alpha M^2\leq \beta |\lambda| with the calculable numbers m02,α,βm_0^2, \alpha, \beta. We point out that this result would be important to study the stability of the brane and cosmological problems based on the brane-world.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    Observations and asteroseismic analysis of the rapidly pulsating hot B subdwarf PG 0911+456

    The principal aim of this project is to determine the structural parameters of the rapidly pulsating subdwarf B star PG 0911+456 from asteroseismology. Our work forms part of an ongoing programme to constrain the internal characteristics of hot B subdwarfs with the long-term goal of differentiating between the various formation scenarios proposed for these objects. First comparisons of asteroseismic values with evolutionary theory look promising, however it is clear that more targets are needed for meaningful statistics to be derived. The observational pulsation periods of PG 0911+456 were extracted from rapid time-series photometry using standard Fourier analysis techniques. Supplemented by spectroscopic estimates of the star's mean atmospheric parameters, they were used as a basis for the "forward modelling" approach in asteroseismology. The latter culminates in the identification of one or more "optimal" models that can accurately reproduce the observed period spectrum. This naturally leads to an identification of the oscillations detected in terms of degree l and radial order k, and infers the structural parameters of the target. From the photometry it was possible to extract 7 independent pulsation periods in the 150-200 s range with amplitudes between 0.05 and 0.8 % of the star's mean brightness. An asteroseismic search of parameter space identified several models that matched the observed properties of PG 0911+456 well, one of which was isolated as the "optimal" model on the basis of spectroscopic and mode identification considerations. All the observed pulsations are identified with low-order acoustic modes with degree indices l=0,1,2 and 4, and match the computed periods with a dispersion of only ~0.26 %.Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 14 pages, 13 figure

    We show that the embedding of either a static or a time dependent maximally 3-symmetric brane with non-zero spatial curvature kk into a non-compactified AdS5AdS_5 bulk does not yield exponential suppression of the geometry away from the brane.     We carefully investigate the gravitational perturbation of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) single brane-world solution [hep-th/9906064], based on a covariant curvature tensor formalism recently developed by us. Using this curvature formalism, it is known that the `electric' part of the 5-dimensional Weyl tensor, denoted by EμνE_{\mu\nu}, gives the leading order correction to the conventional Einstein equations on the brane. We consider the general solution of the perturbation equations for the 5-dimensional Weyl tensor caused by the matter fluctuations on the brane. By analyzing its asymptotic behaviour in the direction of the 5th dimension, we find the curvature invariant diverges as we approach the Cauchy horizon. However, in the limit of asymptotic future in the vicinity of the Cauchy horizon, the curvature invariant falls off fast enough to render the divergence harmless to the brane-world. We also obtain the asymptotic behavior of EμνE_{\mu\nu} on the brane at spatial infinity, assuming the matter perturbation is localized. We find it falls off sufficiently fast and will not affect the conserved quantities at spatial infinity. This indicates strongly that the usual conservation law, such as the ADM energy conservation, holds on the brane as far as asymptotically flat spacetimes are concerned.Comment: 10 pages, references adde

    Just how hot are the ω\omega Centauri extreme horizontal branch pulsators?

    Past studies based on optical spectroscopy suggest that the five ω\omega Cen pulsators form a rather homogeneous group of hydrogen-rich subdwarf O stars with effective temperatures of around 50 000 K. This places the stars below the red edge of the theoretical instability strip in the log gg - Teff diagram, where no pulsation modes are predicted to be excited. Our goal is to determine whether this temperature discrepancy is real, or whether the stars' effective temperatures were simply underestimated. We present a spectral analysis of two rapidly pulsating extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars found in ω\omega Cen. We obtained Hubble Space Telescope/COS UV spectra of two ω\omega Cen pulsators, V1 and V5, and used the ionisation equilibrium of UV metallic lines to better constrain their effective temperatures. As a by-product we also obtained FUV lightcurves of the two pulsators. Using the relative strength of the N IV and N V lines as a temperature indicator yields Teff values close to 60 000 K, significantly hotter than the temperatures previously derived. From the FUV light curves we were able to confirm the main pulsation periods known from optical data. With the UV spectra indicating higher effective temperatures than previously assumed, the sdO stars would now be found within the predicted instability strip. Such higher temperatures also provide consistent spectroscopic masses for both the cool and hot EHB stars of our previously studied sample.Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    The inter-rater reliability of the diagnosis of surgical site infection in the context of a clinical trial.

    ObjectivesThe diagnosis of surgical site infection following endoprosthetic reconstruction for bone tumours is frequently a subjective diagnosis. Large clinical trials use blinded Central Adjudication Committees (CACs) to minimise the variability and bias associated with assessing a clinical outcome. The aim of this study was to determine the level of inter-rater and intra-rater agreement in the diagnosis of surgical site infection in the context of a clinical trial.Materials and methodsThe Prophylactic Antibiotic Regimens in Tumour Surgery (PARITY) trial CAC adjudicated 29 non-PARITY cases of lower extremity endoprosthetic reconstruction. The CAC members classified each case according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) criteria for surgical site infection (superficial, deep, or organ space). Combinatorial analysis was used to calculate the smallest CAC panel size required to maximise agreement. A final meeting was held to establish a consensus.ResultsFull or near consensus was reached in 20 of the 29 cases. The Fleiss kappa value was calculated as 0.44 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.35 to 0.53), or moderate agreement. The greatest statistical agreement was observed in the outcome of no infection, 0.61 (95% CI 0.49 to 0.72, substantial agreement). Panelists reached a full consensus in 12 of 29 cases and near consensus in five of 29 cases when CDC criteria were used (superficial, deep or organ space). A stable maximum Fleiss kappa of 0.46 (95% CI 0.50 to 0.35) at CAC sizes greater than three members was obtained.ConclusionsThere is substantial agreement among the members of the PARITY CAC regarding the presence or absence of surgical site infection. Agreement on the level of infection, however, is more challenging. Additional clinical information routinely collected by the prospective PARITY trial may improve the discriminatory capacity of the CAC in the parent study for the diagnosis of infection.Cite this article: J.     Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection With Percutaneous Needling for Recalcitrant Lateral Epicondylitis: Comparison of Tenotomy and Fenestration Techniques.

    Background: Recalcitrant lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a common debilitating condition, with numerous treatment options of varying success. An injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been shown to improve LE, although it is unclear whether the method of needling used in conjunction with a PRP injection is of clinical importance. Purpose: To determine whether percutaneous needle tenotomy is superior to percutaneous needle fenestration when each is combined with a PRP injection for the treatment of recalcitrant LE. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 93 patients with recalcitrant LE were treated with a PRP injection and percutaneous needle fenestration (n = 45) or percutaneous needle tenotomy (n = 48) over a 5-year study interval. Preoperative patient data, including visual analog scale for pain (VAS-P), Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH), and Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE) scores and grip strength, were obtained from a chart review and compared with postoperative values obtained prospectively. Secondary outcomes included the incidence of complications, need for additional interventions, return to work, and patient satisfaction. Results: At a mean follow-up of 40 months, significant improvements in VAS-P (mean, -6.1; 95% CI, -6.8 to -5.5; P \u3c .0001), QuickDASH (mean, -46; 95% CI, -52 to -40; P \u3c .0001), and PRTEE (mean, -57; 95% CI, -64 to -50; P \u3c .0001) scores and grip strength (mean, +6.1 kg; 95% CI, 4.9 to 7.3; P \u3c .0001) were observed across the entire study cohort, with no significant differences noted between the fenestration and tenotomy groups. Nine of 45 patients (22%) underwent additional procedures to treat recurrent symptoms in the fenestration group compared with 5 of 48 patients (10%) in the tenotomy group (P = .05). No complications occurred in any patients, and no patients expressed dissatisfaction with their treatment course. Conclusion: A PRP injection with concomitant percutaneous needling is an effective treatment for recalcitrant LE, with sustained improvements in pain, strength, and function demonstrated at a mean follow-up of longer than 3 years. Although the method of concomitant needling does not appear to have a significant effect on treatment outcomes, more aggressive needle tenotomy is less likely to require conversion to open tenotomy than needle fenestration in the short term to midterm

    Layered Higgs Phase as a Possible Field Localisation on a Brane

    So far it has been found by using lattice techniques that in the anisotropic five--dimensional Abelian Higgs model, a layered Higgs phase exists in addition to the expected five--dimensional one. The exploration of the phase diagram has shown that the two Higgs phases are separated by a phase transition from the confining phase. This transition is known to be first order. In this paper we explore the possibility of finding a second order transition point in the critical line which separates the first order phase transition from the crossover region. This is shown to be the case only for the four--dimensional Higgs layered phase whilst the phase transition to the five--dimensional broken phase remains first order. The layered phase serves as the possible realisation of four--dimensional spacetime dynamics which is embedded in a five--dimensional spacetime. These results are due to gauge and scalar field localisation by confining interactions along the extra fifth direction.Comment: 1+15 pages, 12 figure

    A Quantitative Analysis of the Available Multicolor Photometry for Rapidly Pulsating Hot B Subdwarfs

    We present a quantitative and homogeneous analysis of the broadband multicolor photometric data sets gathered so far on rapidly pulsating hot B subdwarf stars. This concerns seven distinct data sets related to six different stars. Our analysis is carried out within the theoretical framework developed by Randall et al., which includes full nonadiabatic effects. The goal of this analysis is partial mode identification, i.e., the determination of the degree index l of each of the observed pulsation modes. We assume possible values of l from 0 to 5 in our calculations. For each target star, we compute a specific model atmosphere and a specific pulsation model using estimates of the atmospheric parameters coming from time-averaged optical spectroscopy. For every assumed value of l, we use a formal chi-squared approach to model the observed amplitude-wavelength distribution of each mode, and we compute a quality-of-fit Q probability to quantify the derived fit and to discriminate objectively between the various solutions. We find that no completely convincing and unambiguous l identification is possible on the basis of the available data, although partial mode discrimination has been reached for 25 out of the 41 modes studied. A brief statistical study of these results suggests that a majority of the modes must have l values of 0, 1, and 2, but also that modes with l = 4 could very well be present while modes with l = 3 appear to be rarer. This is in line with recent results showing that l = 4 modes in rapidly pulsating B subdwarfs have a higher visibility in the optical domain than modes with l = 3. Although somewhat disappointing in terms of mode discrimination, our results still suggest that the full potential of multicolor photometry for l identification in pulsating subdwarfs is within reach.Comment: 59 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Serie
