Topological mass mechanism and exact fields mapping
We present a class of mappings between models with topological mass mechanism
and purely topological models in arbitrary dimensions. These mappings are
established by directly mapping the fields of one model in terms of the fields
of the other model in closed expressions. These expressions provide the
mappings of their actions as well as the mappings of their propagators. For a
general class of models in which the topological model becomes the BF model the
mappings present arbitrary functions which otherwise are absent for
Chern-Simons like actions. This work generalizes the results of [1] for
arbitrary dimensions.Comment: 11 page
Comparison of 30 THz impulsive burst time development to microwaves, H-alpha, EUV, and GOES soft X-rays
The recent discovery of impulsive solar burst emission in the 30 THz band is
raising new interpretation challenges. One event associated with a GOES M2
class flare has been observed simultaneously in microwaves, H-alpha, EUV, and
soft X-ray bands. Although these new observations confirm some features found
in the two prior known events, they exhibit time profile structure
discrepancies between 30 THz, microwaves, and hard X-rays (as inferred from the
Neupert effect). These results suggest a more complex relationship between 30
THz emission and radiation produced at other wavelength ranges. The multiple
frequency emissions in the impulsive phase are likely to be produced at a
common flaring site lower in the chromosphere. The 30 THz burst emission may be
either part of a nonthermal radiation mechanism or due to the rapid thermal
response to a beam of high-energy particles bombarding the dense solar
atmosphere.Comment: accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysic
Homogeneous geodesics of non-unimodular Lorentzian Lie groups and naturally reductive Lorentzian spaces in dimension three
We determine, for all three-dimensional non-unimodular Lie groups equipped
with a Lorentzian metric, the set of homogeneous geodesics through a point.
Together with the results of [C] and [CM2], this leads to the full
classification of three-dimensional Lorentzian g.o. spaces and naturally
reductive spaces
Spin-excitations of the quantum Hall ferromagnet of composite fermions
The spin-excitations of a fractional quantum Hall system are evaluated within
a bosonization approach. In a first step, we generalize Murthy and Shankar's
Hamiltonian theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect to the case of
composite fermions with an extra discrete degree of freedom. Here, we mainly
investigate the spin degrees of freedom, but the proposed formalism may be
useful also in the study of bilayer quantum-Hall systems, where the layer index
may formally be treated as an isospin. In a second step, we apply a
bosonization scheme, recently developed for the study of the two-dimensional
electron gas, to the interacting composite-fermion Hamiltonian. The dispersion
of the bosons, which represent quasiparticle-quasihole excitations, is
analytically evaluated for fractional quantum Hall systems at \nu = 1/3 and \nu
= 1/5. The finite width of the two-dimensional electron gas is also taken into
account explicitly. In addition, we consider the interacting bosonic model and
calculate the lowest-energy state for two bosons. Besides a continuum
describing scattering states, we find a bound-state of two bosons. This state
is interpreted as a pair excitation, which consists of a skyrmion of composite
fermions and an antiskyrmion of composite fermions. The dispersion relation of
the two-boson state is evaluated for \nu = 1/3 and \nu = 1/5. Finally, we show
that our theory provides the microscopic basis for a phenomenological
non-linear sigma-model for studying the skyrmion of composite fermions.Comment: Revised version, 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev.
On the Nature of Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
A novel model of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in the
presence of a strong external magnetic field is proposed for explanation of
recent numerical results. According to the proposed model, in the presence of
the strong external magnetic field, incompressible magnetohydrodynamic
turbulence becomes nonlocal in the sense that low frequency modes cause
decorrelation of interacting high frequency modes from the inertial interval.
It is shown that the obtained nonlocal spectrum of the inertial range of
incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence represents an anisotropic
analogue of Kraichnan's nonlocal spectrum of hydrodynamic turbulence. Based on
the analysis performed in the framework of the weak coupling approximation,
which represents one of the equivalent formulations of the direct interaction
approximation, it is shown that incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
could be both local and nonlocal and therefore anisotropic analogues of both
the Kolmogorov and Kraichnan spectra are realizable in incompressible
magnetohydrodynamic turbulence.Comment: Physics of Plasmas (Accepted). A small chapter added about 2D MHD

Far infrared properties of the rare-earth scandate DyScO3
We present reflectance measurements in the infrared region on a single
crystal the rare earth scandate DyScO3. Measurements performed between room
temperature and 10 K allow to determine the frequency of the infrared-active
phonons, never investigated experimentally, and to get information on their
temperature dependence. A comparison with the phonon peak frequency resulting
from ab-initio computations is also provided. We finally report detailed data
on the frequency dependence of the complex refractive index of DyScO3 in the
terahertz region, which is important in the analysis of terahertz measurements
on thin films deposited on DyScO3
SIMBOL-X : a new generation hard X-ray telescope
SIMBOL-X is a hard X-ray mission, operating in the 0.5-70 keV range, which is
proposed by a consortium of European laboratories for a launch around 2010.
Relying on two spacecraft in a formation flying configuration, SIMBOL-X uses a
30 m focal length X-ray mirror to achieve an unprecedented angular resolution
(30 arcsec HEW) and sensitivity (100 times better than INTEGRAL below 50 keV)
in the hard X-ray range. SIMBOL-X will allow to elucidate fundamental questions
in high energy astrophysics, such as the physics of accretion onto Black Holes,
of acceleration in quasar jets and in supernovae remnants, or the nature of the
hard X-ray diffuse emission. The scientific objectives and the baseline
concepts of the mission and hardware design are presented.Comment: 12 pages, 16 fig., Proc. SPIE conf. 5168, San Diego, Aug. 200
Generalized Coherent States as Preferred States of Open Quantum Systems
We investigate the connection between quasi-classical (pointer) states and
generalized coherent states (GCSs) within an algebraic approach to Markovian
quantum systems (including bosons, spins, and fermions). We establish
conditions for the GCS set to become most robust by relating the rate of purity
loss to an invariant measure of uncertainty derived from quantum Fisher
information. We find that, for damped bosonic modes, the stability of canonical
coherent states is confirmed in a variety of scenarios, while for systems
described by (compact) Lie algebras stringent symmetry constraints must be
obeyed for the GCS set to be preferred. The relationship between GCSs,
minimum-uncertainty states, and decoherence-free subspaces is also elucidated.Comment: 5 pages, no figures; Significantly improved presentation, new

Let's Twist Again: N=2 Super Yang Mills Theory Coupled To Matter
We give the twisted version of N=2 Super Yang Mills theory coupled to matter,
including quantum fields, supersymmetry transformations, action and algebraic
structure. We show that the whole action, coupled to matter, can be written as
the variation of a nilpotent operator, modulo field equations. An extended
Slavnov-Taylor identity, collecting gauge symmetry and supersymmetry, is
written, which allows to define the web of algebraic constraints, in view of
the algebraic renormalization and of the extension of the non-renormalization
theorems holding for N=2 SYM theory without matter.Comment: 28 pages, final version to be published on CQ
