Benefits of joint LIGO -- Virgo coincidence searches for burst and inspiral signals
We examine the benefits of performing a joint LIGO--Virgo search for
transient signals. We do this by adding burst and inspiral signals to 24 hours
of simulated detector data. We find significant advantages to performing a
joint coincidence analysis, above either a LIGO only or Virgo only search.
These include an increased detection efficiency, at a fixed false alarm rate,
to both burst and inspiral events and an ability to reconstruct the sky
location of a signal.Comment: 11 pages 8 figures, Amaldi 6 proceeding
Risk of cancer in first seven years after metal-on-metal hip replacement compared with other bearings and general population: linkage study between the National Joint Registry of England and Wales and hospital episode statistics.

RULIE : rule unification for learning information extraction
In this paper we are presenting RULIE (Rule Unification for Learning Information Extraction), an adaptive information extraction algorithm which works by employing a hybrid technique of Rule Learning and Rule Unification in order to extract relevant information from all types of documents which can be found and used in the semantic web. This algorithm combines the techniques of the LP2 and the BWI algorithms for improved performance. In this paper we are also presenting the experimen- tal results of this algorithm and respective details of evaluation. This evaluation compares RULIE to other information extraction algorithms based on their respective performance measurements and in almost all cases RULIE outruns the other algorithms which are namely: LP2 , BWI, RAPIER, SRV and WHISK. This technique would aid current techniques of linked data which would eventually lead to fullier realisation of the semantic web.peer-reviewe
A first comparison of search methods for gravitational wave bursts using LIGO and Virgo simulated data
We present a comparative study of 6 search methods for gravitational wave
bursts using simulated LIGO and Virgo noise data. The data's spectra were
chosen to follow the design sensitivity of the two 4km LIGO interferometers and
the 3km Virgo interferometer. The searches were applied on replicas of the data
sets to which 8 different signals were injected. Three figures of merit were
employed in this analysis: (a) Receiver Operator Characteristic curves, (b)
necessary signal to noise ratios for the searches to achieve 50 percent and 90
percent efficiencies, and (c) variance and bias for the estimation of the
arrival time of a gravitational wave burst.Comment: GWDAW9 proceeding
Environmental risk factors in hospital suicide.
Suicide of hospitalized patients is the most common sentinel event reviewed by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Shorter lengths of stay, sicker patients, and higher patient to staff ratios challenge the ability of the hospital to maintain safety. Risk factors associated with the physical environment of the inpatient psychiatric unit, cited as the most common root cause of inpatient suicide, may be neglected because evaluation of these factors is generally not included in medical education and training. Minimization of fixtures that can facilitate strangulation and other high risk aspects within the hospital environment is an important element in the prevention of suicide on psychiatric units
Updated Constraints on the Minimal Supergravity Model
Recently, refinements have been made on both the theoretical and experimental
determinations of the i.) mass of the lightest Higgs scalar (m_h), ii.) relic
density of cold dark matter in the universe (Omega_CDM h^2), iii.) branching
fraction for radiative B decay BF(b \to s \gamma), iv.) muon anomalous magnetic
moment (a_\mu), and v.) flavor violating decay B_s \to \mu^+\mu^-. Each of
these quantities can be predicted in the MSSM, and each depends in a
non-trivial way on the spectra of SUSY particles. In this paper, we present
updated constraints from each of these quantities on the minimal supergravity
(mSUGRA) model as embedded in the computer program ISAJET. The combination of
constraints points to certain favored regions of model parameter space where
collider and non-accelerator SUSY searches may be more focussed.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. Version published in JHE
