Entropy in quantum chromodynamics
We review the role of zero-temperature entropy in several closely-related
contexts in QCD. The first is entropy associated with disordered condensates,
including . The second is vacuum entropy arising from QCD
solitons such as center vortices, yielding confinement and chiral symmetry
breaking. The third is entanglement entropy, which is entropy associated with a
pure state, such as the QCD vacuum, when the state is partially unobserved and
unknown. Typically, entanglement entropy of an unobserved three-volume scales
not with the volume but with the area of its bounding surface. The fourth
manifestation of entropy in QCD is the configurational entropy of
light-particle world-lines and flux tubes; we argue that this entropy is
critical for understanding how confinement produces chiral symmetry breakdown,
as manifested by a dynamically-massive quark, a massless pion, and a condensate.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures. Preprint version of invited review for Modern

Carbon monoxide binding to iron porphyrins
The carbon monoxide affinities of iron complexes of meso-tetra (α,α,α,α-o-pivalamidophenyl)porphyrin (the "picket fence" porphyrin) and of a "picket fence" porphyrin derivative with an appended axial base have been measured in solution and compared with the CO affinities of various hemoproteins. The model complexes bind CO with much greater affinity than normal hemoproteins; the role of the steric bulk of distal residues in lowering the CO affinities of the hemoproteins is discussed. The significance of this lowered CO affinity is described with regard to endogenous CO. A discussion of mutant hemoglobins lacking distal residues that sterically inhibit the binding of CO is presented. The use of pressure units versus concentration units in equilibrium expressions is analyzed
Quantum and classical surface acoustic wave induced magnetoresistance oscillations in a 2D electron gas
We study theoretically the geometrical and temporal commensurability
oscillations induced in the resistivity of 2D electrons in a perpendicular
magnetic field by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). We show that there is a
positive anisotropic dynamical classical contribution and an isotropic
non-equilibrium quantum contribution to the resistivity. We describe how the
commensurability oscillations modulate the resonances in the SAW-induced
resistivity at multiples of the cyclotron frequency. We study the effects of
both short-range and long-range disorder on the resistivity corrections for
both the classical and quantum non-equilibrium cases. We predict that the
quantum correction will give rise to zero-resistance states with associated
geometrical commensurability oscillations at large SAW amplitude for
sufficiently large inelastic scattering times. These zero resistance states are
qualitatively similar to those observed under microwave illumination, and their
nature depends crucially on whether the disorder is short- or long-range.
Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for current and future
experiments on two dimensional electron gases.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
Entanglement entropy and quantum field theory: a non-technical introduction
In these proceedings we give a pedagogical and non-technical introduction to
the Quantum Field Theory approach to entanglement entropy. Particular attention
is devoted to the one space dimensional case, with a linear dispersion
relation, that, at a quantum critical point, can be effectively described by a
two-dimensional Conformal Field Theory.Comment: 10 Pages, 2 figures. Talk given at the conference "Entanglement in

A cohort study of duplex Doppler examinations of the carotid artery in primary open angle glaucoma
Objectives To explore the possibility of pathological change in the common carotid artery at the bifurcation and in the internal carotid artery beyond the bifurcation which could contribute to a reduced diastolic pressure as observed in primary open angle glaucoma.
Design Duplex ultrasonic examinations of carotid bifurcations were conducted on 80 patients. Carotid artery defects were allocated into three types: no demonstrable flow defects, internal carotid artery abnormalities and disease in the carotid bulb.
Setting Bristol Royal Infirmary Vascular Laboratory.
Participants Eighty patients (mean age 69.6 years) providing a total of 160 sides to the analysis.
Main outcome measures An estimated central retinal artery pressure, intraocular pressure and field loss were recorded for each side measured.
Results Doppler investigations revealed significant levels of pathological change in the internal carotid distinct from changes at the carotid bulb. The disease revealed in the internal carotid artery was significantly associated with intraocular pressure (p = 0.032), with an effect small to medium in magnitude. The Q2 measure, derived from mean arterial pressure and intraocular pressure, was also substantively associated with disease in the internal carotid artery. Both intraocular pressure and the Q2 measure effectively discriminated between groups, with field loss providing rather less discriminating capability. There was a strong trend towards a higher intraocular pressures and a greater visual field loss with internal carotid artery disease.
Conclusions Pathological changes in the extra cranial carotid artery in primary open angle glaucoma exceed those in the arteries classified as normal. The presence of disease specifically in the internal carotid artery emphasised the need for a mechanism for the evaluation of the internal carotid apart from the carotid bulb. A basis for clarifying the presence of an ischaemic zone is proposed
Entanglement negativity in quantum field theory
We develop a systematic method to extract the negativity in the ground state
of a 1+1 dimensional relativistic quantum field theory, using a path integral
formalism to construct the partial transpose rho_A^{T_2} of the reduced density
matrix of a subsystem A=A1 U A2, and introducing a replica approach to obtain
its trace norm which gives the logarithmic negativity E=ln||\rho_A^{T_2}||.
This is shown to reproduce standard results for a pure state. We then apply
this method to conformal field theories, deriving the result E\sim(c/4) ln(L1
L2/(L1+L2)) for the case of two adjacent intervals of lengths L1, L2 in an
infinite system, where c is the central charge. For two disjoint intervals it
depends only on the harmonic ratio of the four end points and so is manifestly
scale invariant. We check our findings against exact numerical results in the
harmonic chain.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Signal from Nuclear Photodisintegration as a Probe of Extragalactic Sources of Ultrahigh-Energy Nuclei
It is crucial to identify the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) sources and
probe their unknown properties. Recent results from the Pierre Auger
Observatory favor a heavy nuclear composition for the UHECRs. Under the
requirement that heavy nuclei survive in these sources, using gamma-ray bursts
as an example, we predict a diagnostic gamma-ray signal, unique to nuclei - the
emission of de-excitation gamma rays following photodisintegration. These gamma
rays, boosted from MeV to TeV-PeV energies, may be detectable by gamma-ray
telescopes such as VERITAS, HESS, and MAGIC, and especially the next-generation
CTA and AGIS. They are a promising messenger to identify and study individual
UHE nuclei accelerators.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRD, with extended
