    Η αστική γεωχημεία είναιένας επιστημονικός κλάδος ο οποίος αναπτύσσεταιτα τελευταία χρόνια κυρίως λόγω των περιβαλλοντικών επιπτώσεων που προκύπτουν από την αστικοποίηση. Η παρούσα εργασία έχει ως στόχο τον προσδιορισμό των συγκεντρώσεων δυνητικά επιβλαβών στοιχείων (PHEs) των επιφανειακών (0-10 cm) εδαφών προερχόμενων από αλσύλια της Αθήνας. Η δειγματοληψία υπαίθρου πραγματοποιήθηκε σε 20 αλσύλια της Αττικής και κάλυψε συνολική έκταση περίπου 200km2 . Αναλύθηκαν 20 εδαφικά δείγματα κοκκομετρίας Mn >Ni≈ Cu≈ Zn> Cr. Τα δεδομένα της έρευνας υποδεικνύουν ότι το έδαφος των αλσυλίων μπορεί να είναι ένας σημαντικός ταμιευτήρας των ανθρωπογενών στοιχείων στο αστικό έδαφοςUrban geochemistry is a scientific discipline which is growing in the recent years mainly because of the environmental impact caused by urbanization. The present study aims to determine the concentrations of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) on surface soils (0-10cm) in Athens parks. Soil sampling was carried out in public park areas within the Athens urban area. Twenty surface soil (0-10cm) samples were collected and the Mn >Ni≈ Cu≈ Zn> Cr. The data indicate that park areas seem to be important sinks of anthropogenic elements in urban soils

    Mesoscale modeling of combined aerosol and photo-oxidant processes in the Eastern Mediterranean

    International audienceParticulate matter and photo-oxidant processes in the Eastern Mediterranean have been studied using the UAM-AERO mesoscale air quality model in conjunction with the NILU-CTM regional model. Meteorological data were obtained from the RAMS prognostic meteorological model. The modeling domain includes the eastern Mediterranean area between the Greek mainland and the island of Crete. The modeling system is applied to study the atmospheric processes in three periods, i.e. 13?16 July 2000, 26?30 July 2000 and 7?14 January 2001. The spatial and temporal distributions of both gaseous and particulate matter pollutants have been extensively studied together with the identification of major emission sources in the area. The modeling results were compared with field data obtained in the same period. The objective of the current modeling work was mainly to apply the UAM-AERO mesoscale model in the eastern Mediterranean in order to assess the performed field campaigns and determine that the applied mesoscale model is fit for this purpose. Comparison of the modeling results with measured data was performed for a number of gaseous and aerosol species. The UAM-AERO model underestimates the PM10 measured concentrations during summer and winter campaigns. Discrepancies between modeled and measured data are attributed to unresolved particulate matter emissions. Particulate matter in the area is mainly composed by sulphate, sea salt and crustal materials, and with significant amounts of nitrate, ammonium and organics. During winter the particulate matter and oxidant concentrations were lower than the summer values

    A somatic mutation in the thyrotropin receptor gene in a patient with an autonomous nodule within a multinodular goiter

    ABSTRACT Thyrotropin (TSH) is the prime regulator of thyroid cell growth and function and acts through the thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) located on the surface membrane of thyrocytes. Somatic heterozygous mutations that cause TSHR activation in the absence of TSH have been found in toxic adenomas and in hot nodules of multinodular goiters. Clinically and histologically heterogeneous nodules can share common gain-of-function mutations. Mutation prevalence varies greatly and is inversely related to iodine intake of the population. We report a Greek patient presenting with subclinical hyperthyroidism due to a fast-growing autonomous hyperplastic nodule in a long-standing multinodular goiter. Direct DNA sequencing showed that the hot nodule harbored a somatic heterozygous activating TSHR mutation: substitution of glutamine for leucine in the third transmembrane helix. This mutation (L512Q) was recently described in two solitary toxic adenomas. This report expands the spectrum of mutations shared by dissimilar hot nodules, supporting a common mechanism for nonautoimmune thyroid autonomy. The identification of the L512Q substitution demonstrates that gainof-function TSHR mutations are encountered in Greece, although iodine deficiency has been significantly corrected over the last three decades

    Promoter Decommissioning by the NuRD Chromatin Remodeling Complex Triggers Synaptic Connectivity in the Mammalian Brain

    SummaryPrecise control of gene expression plays fundamental roles in brain development, but the roles of chromatin regulators in neuronal connectivity have remained poorly understood. We report that depletion of the NuRD complex by in vivo RNAi and conditional knockout of the core NuRD subunit Chd4 profoundly impairs the establishment of granule neuron parallel fiber/Purkinje cell synapses in the rodent cerebellar cortex in vivo. By interfacing genome-wide sequencing of transcripts and ChIP-seq analyses, we uncover a network of repressed genes and distinct histone modifications at target gene promoters that are developmentally regulated by the NuRD complex in the cerebellum in vivo. Finally, in a targeted in vivo RNAi screen of NuRD target genes, we identify a program of NuRD-repressed genes that operate as critical regulators of presynaptic differentiation in the cerebellar cortex. Our findings define NuRD-dependent promoter decommissioning as a developmentally regulated programming mechanism that drives synaptic connectivity in the mammalian brain

    Two-dimensional discrete wavelet analysis of multiparticle event topology in heavy ion collisions

    The event-by-event analysis of multiparticle production in high energy hadron and nuclei collisions can be performed using the discrete wavelet transformation. The ring-like and jet-like structures in two-dimensional angular histograms are well extracted by wavelet analysis. For the first time the method is applied to the jet-like events with background simulated by event generators, which are developed to describe nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies. The jet positions are located quite well by the discrete wavelet transformation of angular particle distribution even in presence of strong background.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Upper Limit of D0 Production in Central Pb-Pb Collisions at 158A GeV

    Results are presented from a search for the decays D0 -> Kmin piplus and D0bar -> Kplus pimin in a sample of 3.8x10^6 central Pb-Pb events collected with a beam energy of 158A GeV by NA49 at the CERN SPS. No signal is observed. An upper limit on D0 production is derived and compared to predictions from several models.Comment: REVTEX 5 pages, 4 figure

    Observation of an Exotic S = -2, Q = -2 Baryon Resonance in Proton-Proton Collisions at the CERN SPS

    Results of resonance searches in the Xi- pi-, Xi- pi+, antiXi+ pi- and antiXi+ pi+ invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s}=17.2 GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow Xi- pi- baryon resonance with mass of 1.862+/-0.002 GeV/c^2 and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c^2. The significance is estimated to be 4.0 sigma. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic Xi_(3/2)^-- baryon with S = -2, I = 3/2 and a quark content of (d s d s ubar). At the same mass a peak is observed in the Xi- pi+ spectrum which is a candidate for the Xi_(3/2)^0 member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of (d s u s dbar). The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Bose-Einstein correlations of pion pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS energies

    Measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of pion pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions were performed with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS for beam energies of 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. Correlation functions were measured in the longitudinally co-moving ``out-side-long'' reference frame as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in the forward hemisphere of the reaction. Radius and correlation strength parameters were obtained from fits of a Gaussian parametrization. The results show a decrease of the radius parameters with increasing transverse momentum characteristic of strong radial flow in the pion source. No striking dependence on pion-pair rapidity or beam energy is observed. Static and dynamic properties of the pion source are obtained from simultaneous fits with a blast-wave model to radius parameters and midrapidity transverse momentum spectra. Predictions of hydrodynamic and microscopic models of Pb+Pb collisions are discussed.Comment: 22 pages, 23 figure

    Rapidity and energy dependence of the electric charge correlations in A+A collisions at the SPS energies

    Results from electric charge correlations studied with the Balance Function method in A+A collisions from 20\emph{A} to 158\emph{A} GeV are presented in two different rapidity intervals: In the mid-rapidity region we observe a decrease of the width of the Balance Function distribution with increasing centrality of the collision, whereas this effect vanishes in the forward rapidity region. Results from the energy dependence study in central Pb+Pb collisions show that the narrowing of the Balance Function expressed by the normalised width parameter \textit{W} increases with energy towards the highest SPS and RHIC energies. Finally we compare our experimental data points with predictions of several models. The hadronic string models UrQMD and HIJING do not reproduce the observed narrowing of the Balance Function. However, AMPT which contains a quark-parton transport phase before hadronization can reproduce the narrowing of the BF's width with centrality. This confirms the proposed sensitivity of the Balance Function analysis to the time of hadronization.Comment: Submitted in Phys. Rev.
