    A wireless epiretinal retina implant sytem, capable of stimulating the retinal ganglion cells in blind Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) patients, was developed. The prosthesis itself is completely implanted into the eyeball, with no cable crossing the eye's wall. Data and energy are provided by inductive coupling. The implant is based on a flexible polyimide tape with an intergrated receiver coil, stimulation electrodes and microchips. The system was implanted into six legally blind patients for four weeks. All patients reported on visual sensations, evoked by electrical stimulations of their retina. The required stimulation thresholds were found to be very low. Implantation and explantation surgery were performed without complications. The implant was well tolerated for the duration of four weeks

    Flexoelectricity in an oxadiazole bent-core nematic liquid crystal

    We have determined experimentally the magnitude of the difference in the splay and bend flexoelectric coefficients, |e1 - e3|, of an oxadiazole bent-core liquid crystal by measuring the critical voltage for the formation of flexodomains together with their wave number. The coefficient |e1 - e3| is found to be a factor of 2-3 times higher than in most conventional calamitic nematic liquid crystals, varying from 8 pCm-1 to 20 pCm-1 across the ∼60 K - wide nematic regime. We have also calculated the individual flexoelectric coefficients e1 and e3, with the dipolar and quadrupolar contributions of the bent-core liquid crystal by combining density functional theory calculations with a molecular field approach and atomistic modelling. Interestingly, the magnitude of the bend flexoelectric coefficient is found to be rather small, in contrast to common expectations for bent-core molecules. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental values, offering an insight into how molecular parameters contribute to the flexoelectric coefficients and illustrating a huge potential for the prediction of flexoelectric behaviour in bent-core liquid crystals

    Creating number states in the micromaser using feedback

    We use the quantum theory of feedback developed by Wiseman and Milburn [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 548 (1993)] and Wiseman [Phys. Rev. A 49, 2133 (1994)] to investigate the photon-number noise properties of the micromaser with direct detection feedback. We find that the feedback can significantly reduce the amount of noise in the photon number. Under the right conditions the feedback locks the systems onto a number state. As opposed to other schemes in the past [P. Meystre, Opt. Lett. 12, 669 (1987); J. Krause, M. O. Scully, and H. Walther, Phys. Rev. A 36, 4547 (1987)], we can fix the number states to which the system evolves. We also simulate the micromaser using the quantum-trajectories method and show that these results agree with the quantum theory of feedback. We show that the noise of quantum island states [P. Bogar, J. A. Bergou, and M. Hillary, Phys. Rev. A 50, 754 (1994)] can be significantly reduced by the feedback

    Проблема обеспечения электромагнитной совместимости при использовании частотно‐регулируемого электропривода является актуальной, так как влияет на надежность и безопасность его эксплуатации. Одной из разновидностей выходных фильтров электромагнитной совместимости являются фильтры du/dt – Г‐образные фильтры нижних частот. В результате анализа параметров фильтров, выпускаемых фирмой Danfoss, получены аналитические выражения для определения их индуктивности, емкости и демпфирующего сопротивления в зависимости от мощности нагрузки преобразователя частоты. Также определены численные значения важных для синтеза фильтров характеристик.The problem of ensuring electromagnetic compatibility when using a frequency‐controlled electric drive is relevant, since it affects the reliability and safety of its operation. One of the types of output filters of electromagnetic compatibility are du/dt filters L‐shaped low‐pass filters. As a result of analyzing the parameters of the filters produced by Danfoss, analytical expressions are obtained for determining their inductance, capacitance and damping resistance depending on the load power of the frequency converter. Numerical values of the characteristics important for the synthesis of filters are also determined

    Screening for affective dysregulation in school-aged children: relationship with comprehensive measures of affective dysregulation and related mental disorders

    Affective dysregulation (AD) is characterized by irritability, severe temper outbursts, anger, and unpredictable mood swings, and is typically classified as a transdiagnostic entity. A reliable and valid measure is needed to adequately identify children at risk of AD. This study sought to validate a parent-rated screening questionnaire, which is part of the comprehensive Diagnostic Tool for Affective Dysregulation in Children (DADYS-Screen), by analyzing relationships with comprehensive measures of AD and related mental disorders in a community sample of children with and without AD. The sample comprised 1114 children aged 8–12 years and their parents. We used clinical, parent, and child ratings for our analyses. Across all raters, the DADYS-Screen showed large correlations with comprehensive measures of AD. As expected, correlations were stronger for measures of externalizing symptoms than for measures of internalizing symptoms. Moreover, we found negative associations with emotion regulation strategies and health-related quality of life. In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses, the DADYS-Screen adequately identified children with AD and provided an optimal cut-off. We conclude that the DADYS-Screen appears to be a reliable and valid measure to identify school-aged children at risk of AD

    Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children with and without affective dysregulation and their families

    Analyzing COVID-19-related stress in children with affective dysregulation (AD) seems especially interesting, as these children typically show heightened reactivity to potential stressors and an increased use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Children in out-of-home care often show similar characteristics to those with AD. Since COVID-19 has led to interruptions in psychotherapy for children with mental health problems and to potentially reduced resources to implement treatment strategies in daily life in families or in out-of-home care, these children might show a particularly strong increase in stress levels. In this study, 512 families of children without AD and 269 families of children with AD reported on COVID-19-related stress. The sample comprised screened community, clinical, and out-of-home care samples. Sociodemographic factors, characteristics of child and caregiver before the pandemic, and perceived change in external conditions due to the pandemic were examined as potential risk or protective factors. Interestingly, only small differences emerged between families of children with and without AD or between subsamples: families of children with AD and families in out-of-home care were affected slightly more, but in few domains. Improvements and deteriorations in treatment-related effects balanced each other out. Overall, the most stable and strongest risk factor for COVID-19-related stress was perceived negative change in external conditions—particularly family conditions and leisure options. Additionally, caregiver characteristics emerged as risk factors across most models. Actions to support families during the pandemic should, therefore, facilitate external conditions and focus on caregiver characteristic to reduce familial COVID-19-related stress.     Media Reporting and Business Cycles: Empirical Evidence based on News Data

    Recent literature suggests that news shocks could be an important driver of economic cycles. In this article, we use a direct measure of news sentiment derived from media reports. This allows us to examine whether innovations in the reporting tone correlate with changes in the assessment and expectations of the business situation as reported by firms in the German manufacturing sector. We fi nd that innovations in news reporting affect business expectations, even when conditioning on the current business situation and industrial production. The dynamics of the empirical model con rm theoretical predictions that news innovations affect real variables such as production via changes in expectations. Looking at individual sectors within manufacturing, we fi nd that macroeconomic news is at least as important for business expectations as sector-spefici c news. This is consistent with the existence of information complementarities across sectors

    The polarization observables T, P, and H and their impact on γppπ0\gamma p \to p\pi^0 multipoles

    Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction γppπ0\gamma p\to p\pi^0 are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for neutral-pion photoproduction
