    Origin of gamma-ray emission in the shell of Cassiopeia A

    Non-thermal X-ray emission from the shell of Cassiopeia A (Cas A) has been an interesting subject of study, as it provides information about relativistic electrons and their acceleration mechanisms in the shocks. Chandra X-ray observatory revealed the detailed spectral and spatial structure of this SNR in X-rays. The spectral analysis of Chandra X-ray data of Cas A shows unequal flux levels for different regions of the shell, which can be attributed to different magnetic fields in those regions. Additionally, the GeV gamma-ray emission observed by Large Area Telescope on board Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope showed that the hadronic processes are dominating in Cas A, a clear signature of acceleration of protons. In this paper we aim to explain the GeV-TeV gamma-ray data in the context of both leptonic and hadronic scenario. We modeled the multi-wavelength spectrum of Cas A. We use synchrotron emission process to explain the observed non-thermal X-ray fluxes from different regions of the shell. These result in estimation of the model parameters, which are then used to explain TeV gamma-ray emission spectrum. We also use hadronic scenario to explain both GeV and TeV fluxes simultaneously. We show that a leptonic model alone cannot explain the GeV-TeV data. Therefore, we need to invoke a hadronic model to explain the observed GeV-TeV fluxes. We found that although pure hadronic model is able to explain the GeV-TeV data, a lepto-hadronic model provides the best fit to the data.Comment: Accepted in A&

    Is neck circumference measurement an indicator for abdominal obesity? A pilot study on Turkish Adults

    Background: Neck circumference (NC) measurement is one of the simple screening measurements which can be used as an index of upper body fat distribution to identify obesity.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between neck circumferences and obesity.Methods:A total 411 volunteer adults participated in this study (174 men, 237 women). A questionnaire which consisted of anthropometric measurements and demographic features was used. Patients with NC ≥37 cm for men and ≥34 cm for women require evaluation of overweight status.Results: The percentages of the men and women with BMI ≥ 25kg/m2 were 55.2% and 27.0% respectively and with high neck circumferences were 85.1% and 38.8%, respectively. The percentages of the men and women with high waist circumference were 31.6% and 79.3%, respectively. In both gender there were positive significant correlations between neck circumference, body weight (men, r=0.576; women, r=0.702; p=0.000), waist circumferences (men, r=0.593; women r=0.667; p=0.000), hip circumferences (men, r=0.568; women, r=0.617; p=0.000) and BMI (men, r=0.587; women, r=0.688; p=0.000).Conclusions: This study indicates that NC was associated with body weight, BMI, waist and hip circumferences and waist/hip ratio for men and women. A significant association was found between NC and conventional overweight and obesity indexes. NC was associated with waist/hip ratio for men and women.Key words: Neck circumference, obesity

    Estimating catch rates in real time: Development of a deep learning based Nephrops (Nephrops norvegicus) counter for demersal trawl fisheries

    Demersal trawling is largely a blind process where information on catch rates and compositions is only available once the catch is taken onboard the vessel. Obtaining quantitative information on catch rates of target species while fishing can improve a fisheries economic and environmental performance as fishers would be able to use this information to make informed decisions during fishing. Despite there are real-time underwater monitoring systems developed for this purpose, the video data produced by these systems is not analyzed in near real-time. In other words, the user is expected to watch the video feed continuously to evaluate catch rates and composition. This is obviously a demanding process in which quantification of the fish counts will be of a qualitative nature. In this study, underwater footages collected using an in-trawl video recording system were processed to detect, track, and count the number of individuals of the target species, Nephrops norvegicus, entering the trawl in real-time. The detection was accomplished using a You Only Look Once v4 (YOLOv4) algorithm. Two other variants of the YOLOv4 algorithm (tiny and scaled) were included in the study to compare their effects on the accuracy of the subsequent steps and overall speed of the processing. SORT algorithm was used as the tracker and any Nephrops that cross the horizontal level at 4/5 of the frame height were counted as catch. The detection performance of the YOLOv4 model provided a mean average precision (mAP@50) value of 97.82%, which is higher than the other two variants. However, the average processing speed of the tiny model is the highest with 253.51 frames per second. A correct count rate of 80.73% was achieved by YOLOv4 when the total number of Nephrops are considered in all the test videos. In conclusion, this approach was successful in processing underwater images in real time to determine the catch rates of the target species. The approach has great potential to process multiple species simultaneously in order to provide quantitative information not only on the target species but also bycatch and unwanted species to provide a comprehensive picture of the catch composition

    Tc-Glutathione Complex (Tc -GSH) : Labelling, Chemical Characterization and Biodistribution in Rats

    The chemical structure of 99mTc-GSH has been estabilished using the 99Tc isotope. Labeling of glutathione with technetium in the presence of stanous chloride gave a high yield result. In a comparative study between 99Tc and 99Tc glutathione, the Tc-GSH complex obtained was purified and characterized by uv, visible spectroscopy, HPLC, Biogel chromatography, mass and NMR spectroscopy. Stoichiometric analysis showed a 2 : 1 molar ratio of GSH/Tc for the reaction. The molecular mass assessed by mass spectroscopy was 727 Da corresponding to an oxo(bis) glutathione technetate. NMR studies demonstrated that each glutathione molecule was coordinated to technetium via cysteinyl sulfur and nitrogen atoms. The biodistribution of the complex was studied in normal rats. Blood clearance was rapid during the first hour involving a biexponential curve ( t1/2 (1) : 50 min, t1/2 (2) : 400 min ). No radioactive accumulation was found in any specific organ except kidney and bladder. All the activity excreted was found unchanged in urine. In conclusion, Tc-GSH displayed an anionic dimer form as GSH-Tc-GSH. We assume that the complex is a tetradentate (2N,2S) complex containing a pentavalent technetium coordinated by two thiol and nitrogen atoms of both GSH ligands, and an apical oxo group

    Planetary migration in evolving planetesimals discs

    In the current paper, we further improved the model for the migration of planets introduced in Del Popolo et al. (2001) and extended to time-dependent planetesimal accretion disks in Del Popolo and Eksi (2002). In the current study, the assumption of Del Popolo and Eksi (2002), that the surface density in planetesimals is proportional to that of gas, is released. In order to obtain the evolution of planetesimal density, we use a method developed in Stepinski and Valageas (1997) which is able to simultaneously follow the evolution of gas and solid particles for up to 10^7 yrs. Then, the disk model is coupled to migration model introduced in Del Popolo et al. (2001) in order to obtain the migration rate of the planet in the planetesimal. We find that the properties of solids known to exist in protoplanetary systems, together with reasonable density profiles for the disk, lead to a characteristic radius in the range 0.03-0.2 AU for the final semi-major axis of the giant planet.Comment: IJMP A in prin

    RXTE Studies of Long-Term X-ray Spectral Variations in 4U 1820-30

    We present the results of detailed spectral studies of the ultra-compact low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1820-30 carried out with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) during 1996-7. 4U 1820-30 is an ``atoll'' source X-ray burster (XRB) located in the globular cluster NGC 6624. It is known to have an 11 minute binary period and a ~176 day modulation in its 2--12 keV flux. Observations were made with the PCA and HEXTE instruments on RXTE at roughly one-month intervals to sample this long-term period and study flux-related spectral changes. There are clear correlations between our fitted spectral parameters and both the broad-band (2--50 keV) flux and the position in the color-color diagram, as described by the parameter S_a introduced by Mendez et al. (1999). In addition, we find a strong correlation between the position in the color-color diagram and the frequencies of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) reported by Zhang et al. (1998). This lends further support to the notion that evidence for the last stable orbit in the accretion disk of 4U 1820-30 has been observed. For a model consisting of Comptonization of cool photons by hot electrons plus an additional blackbody component, we report an abrupt change in the spectral parameters at the same accretion rate at which the kHz QPOs disappear. For a model consisting of a multicolor disk blackbody plus a cut-off power law, we find that the inner disk radius reaches a minimum at the same accretion rate at which the kHz QPO frequency saturates, as expected if the disk reaches the last stable orbit.     Possible evolution of dim radio quiet neutron star 1E 1207.4-5209 based on a B-decay model

    Dim radio-quiet neutron star (DRQNS) 1E 1207.4-5209 is one of the most heavily examined isolated neutron stars. Wide absorption lines were observed in its spectrum obtained by both XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray satellites. These absorption lines can be interpreted as a principal frequency centered at 0.7 keV and its harmonics at 1.4, 2.1 and possibly 2.8 keV. The principal line can be formed by resonant proton cyclotron scattering leading to a magnetic field which is two orders of magnitude larger than the perpendicular component of the surface dipole magnetic field (B) found from the rotation period (P) and the time rate of change in the rotation period (\.{P}) of 1E 1207.4-5209. Besides, age of the supernova remnant (SNR) G296.5+10.0 which is physically connected to 1E 1207.4-5209 is two orders of magnitude smaller than the characteristic age (Ï„\tau=P/2\.{P}) of the neutron star. These huge differences between the magnetic field values and the ages can be explained based on a B-decay model. If the decay is assumed to be exponential, the characteristic decay time turns out to be several thousand years which is three orders of magnitude smaller than the characteristic decay time of radio pulsars represented in an earlier work. The lack of detection of radio emission from DRQNSs and the lack of point sources and pulsar wind nebulae in most of the observed SNRs can also be partly explained by such a very rapid exponential decay. The large difference between the characteristic decay times of DRQNSs and radio pulsars must be related to the differences in the magnetic fields, equation of states and masses of these isolated neutron stars.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur
