A Conserved Bach Current
The Bach tensor and a vector which generates conformal symmetries allow a
conserved four-current to be defined. The Bach four-current gives rise to a
quasilocal two-surface expression for power per luminosity distance in the
Vaidya exterior of collapsing fluid interiors. This is interpreted in terms of
entropy generation.Comment: to appear in Class. Quantum Gra
Phase Transition in the Three-Dimensional Ising Spin Glass
We have studied the three-dimensional Ising spin glass with a
distribution by Monte Carlo simulations. Using larger sizes and much better
statistics than in earlier work, a finite size scaling analysis shows quite
strong evidence for a finite transition temperature, , with ordering below
. Our estimate of the transition temperature is rather lower than in
earlier work, and the value of the correlation length exponent, , is
somewhat higher. Because there may be (unknown) corrections to finite size
scaling, we do not completely rule out the possibility that or that
is finite but with no order below . However, from our data, these
possibilities seem less likely.Comment: Postscript file compressed using uufiles. The postscript file is also

Spatial patterns of desynchronization bursts in networks
We adapt a previous model and analysis method (the {\it master stability
function}), extensively used for studying the stability of the synchronous
state of networks of identical chaotic oscillators, to the case of oscillators
that are similar but not exactly identical. We find that bubbling induced
desynchronization bursts occur for some parameter values. These bursts have
spatial patterns, which can be predicted from the network connectivity matrix
and the unstable periodic orbits embedded in the attractor. We test the
analysis of bursts by comparison with numerical experiments. In the case that
no bursting occurs, we discuss the deviations from the exactly synchronous
state caused by the mismatch between oscillators
Impact of Scale Dependent Bias and Nonlinear Structure Growth on the ISW Effect: Angular Power Spectra
We investigate the impact of nonlinear evolution of the gravitational
potentials in the LCDM model on the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) contribution
to the CMB temperature power spectrum, and on the cross-power spectrum of the
CMB and a set of biased tracers of the mass. We use an ensemble of N-body
simulations to directly follow the potentials and compare results to
perturbation theory (PT). The predictions from PT match the results to high
precision for k<0.2 h/Mpc. We compute the nonlinear corrections to the angular
power spectrum and find them to be <10% of linear theory for l<100. These
corrections are swamped by cosmic variance. On scales l>100 the departures are
more significant, however the CMB signal is more than a factor 10^3 larger at
this scale. Nonlinear ISW effects therefore play no role in shaping the CMB
power spectrum for l<1500. We analyze the CMB--density tracer cross-spectrum
using simulations and renormalized bias PT, and find good agreement. The usual
assumption is that nonlinear evolution enhances the growth of structure and
counteracts linear ISW on small scales, leading to a change in sign of the
CMB-LSS cross-spectrum at small scales. However, PT analysis suggests that this
trend reverses at late times when the logarithmic growth rate
f(a)=dlnD/dlna<0.5 or om_m(a)<0.3. Numerical results confirm these expectations
and we find no sign change in ISW-LSS cross-power for low redshifts.
Corrections due to nonlinearity and scale dependence of the bias are found to
be <10% for l<100, therefore below the S/N of the current and future
measurements. Finally, we estimate the CMB--halo cross-correlation coefficient
and show that it can be made to match that for CMB--dark matter to within 5%
for thin redshift shells, mitigating the need to model bias evolution.Comment: 27 pages, 19 figure. Hi-res. version:

Plate-impact loading of cellular structures formed by selective laser melting
Porous materials are of great interest because of improved energy absorption over their solid counterparts. Their properties, however, have been difficult to optimize. Additive manufacturing has emerged as a potential technique to closely define the structure and properties of porous components, i.e. density, strut width and pore size; however, the behaviour of these materials at very high impact energies remains largely unexplored. We describe an initial study of the dynamic compression response of lattice materials fabricated through additive manufacturing. Lattices consisting of an array of intersecting stainless steel rods were fabricated into discs using selective laser melting. The resulting discs were impacted against solid stainless steel targets at velocities ranging from 300 to 700 m s-1 using a gas gun. Continuum CTH simulations were performed to identify key features in the measured wave profiles, while 3D simulations, in which the individual cells were modelled, revealed details of microscale deformation during collapse of the lattice structure. The validated computer models have been used to provide an understanding of the deformation processes in the cellular samples. The study supports the optimization of cellular structures for application as energy absorbers. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd
Electrocardiographic safety evaluation of dihydroartemisinin piperaquine in the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria.
Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) could become a leading fixed combination malaria treatment worldwide. Although there is accumulating evidence of efficacy and safety from clinical trials, data on cardiotoxicity are limited. In two randomized controlled trials in Thailand, 56 patients had ECGs performed before treatment, 4 hours after the first dose, and 4 hours after the last dose. The mean (95% CI) changes in QTc interval (Bazett's correction) were 2 (-6 to 9) ms and 14 (7 to 21) ms, respectively. These small changes on the third day of treatment are similar to those observed elsewhere in the convalescent phase following antimalarial treatment with drugs known to have no cardiac effects and are therefore likely to result from recovery from acute malaria and not the treatment given. At therapeutic doses, DP does not have clinically significant effects on the electrocardiogram
Oscillations and secondary bifurcations in nonlinear magnetoconvection
Complicated bifurcation structures that appear in nonlinear systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) can be explained by studying appropriate low-order amplitude equations. We demonstrate the power of this approach by considering compressible magnetoconvection. Numerical experiments reveal a transition from a regime with a subcritical Hopf bifurcation from the static solution, to one where finite-amplitude oscillations persist although there is no Hopf bifurcation from the static solution. This transition is associated with a codimension-two bifurcation with a pair of zero eigenvalues. We show that the bifurcation pattern found for the PDEs is indeed predicted by the second-order normal form equation (with cubic nonlinearities) for a Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation with Z2 symmetry. We then extend this equation by adding quintic nonlinearities and analyse the resulting system. Its predictions provide a qualitatively accurate description of solutions of the full PDEs over a wider range of parameter values. Replacing the reflecting (Z2) lateral boundary conditions with periodic [O(2)] boundaries allows stable travelling wave and modulated wave solutions to appear; they could be described by a third-order system
Fish schooling as a basis for vertical axis wind turbine farm design
Most wind farms consist of horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) due to the
high power coefficient (mechanical power output divided by the power of the
free-stream air through the turbine cross-sectional area) of an isolated
turbine. However when in close proximity to neighbouring turbines, HAWTs suffer
from a reduced power coefficient. In contrast, previous research on vertical
axis wind turbines (VAWTs) suggests that closely-spaced VAWTs may experience
only small decreases (or even increases) in an individual turbine's power
coefficient when placed in close proximity to neighbours, thus yielding much
higher power outputs for a given area of land. A potential flow model of
inter-VAWT interactions is developed to investigate the effect of changes in
VAWT spatial arrangement on the array performance coefficient, which compares
the expected average power coefficient of turbines in an array to a
spatially-isolated turbine. A geometric arrangement based on the configuration
of shed vortices in the wake of schooling fish is shown to significantly
increase the array performance coefficient based upon an array of 16x16 wind
turbines. Results suggest increases in power output of over one order of
magnitude for a given area of land as compared to HAWTs.Comment: Submitted for publication in BioInspiration and Biomimetics. Note:

The Masses Of The B-Stars In The High Galactic Latitude Eclipsing Binary IT Lib
A number of blue stars which appear to be similar to Population I B-stars in
the star forming regions of the galactic disk are found more than 1 kpc from
the galactic plane. Uncertainties about the true distances and masses of these
high latitude B-stars has fueled a debate as to their origin and evolutionary
status. The eclipsing binary IT Lib is composed of two B-stars, is
approximately one kiloparsec above the galactic plane, and is moving back
toward the plane. Observations of the light and velocity curves presented here
lead to the conclusion that the B-stars in this system are massive young
main-sequence stars. While there are several possible explanations, it appears
most plausible that the IT Lib system formed in the disk about 30 million years
ago and was ejected on a trajectory taking it to its present position.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the PASP (January
