    Utilization of POCUS in Family Medicine at CMMC

    Maine has a significant portion of patients who live in a rural area far from doctor’s offices and medical centers. Combined with a low SES population where transportation issues are common, POCUS can be an invaluable tool in an FM practice to reduce the number of appointments, and travel needed, for patients in need of healthcare. Access to Care was the number two health priority in the Franklin County community health needs assessment. This project surveyed family medicine practitioners at CMMC about their experience with, clinical use of, and willingness to continue education in POCUS. This survey had few respondents but found a low utilization of POCUS in Family Medicince practice and a high interest in POCUS continuing education.     Dark Matter from Monogem

    As a supernova shock expands into space, it may collide with dark matter particles, scattering them up to velocities more than an order of magnitude larger than typical dark matter velocities in the Milky Way. If a supernova remnant is close enough to Earth, and the appropriate age, this flux of high-velocity dark matter could be detectable in direct detection experiments, particularly if the dark matter interacts via a velocity-dependent operator. This could make it easier to detect light dark matter that would otherwise have too little energy to be detected. We show that the Monogem Ring supernova remnant is both close enough and the correct age to produce such a flux, and thus we produce novel direct detection constraints and sensitivities for future experiments.Comment: 8 Pages of Text, 3 Figure

    On the Role of Context in the Design of Mobile Mashups

    This paper presents a design methodology and an accompanying platform for the design and fast development of Context-Aware Mobile mashUpS (CAMUS). The approach is characterized by the role given to context as a first-class modeling dimension used to support i) the identification of the most adequate resources that can satisfy the users' situational needs and ii) the consequent tailoring at runtime of the provided data and functions. Context-based abstractions are exploited to generate models specifying how data returned by the selected services have to be merged and visualized by means of integrated views. Thanks to the adoption of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques, these models drive the flexible execution of the final mobile app on target mobile devices. A prototype of the platform, making use of novel and advanced Web and mobile technologies, is also illustrated

    Vector-meson contributions do not explain the rate and spectrum in K_L -> pi0 gamma gamma

    We analyze the recent NA48 data for the reaction K_L -> pi0 gamma gamma with and without the assumption of vector meson dominance (VMD). We find that the data is well described by a three-parameter expression inspired by O(p^6) chiral perturbation theory. We also find that it is impossible to fit the shape of the decay distribution and the overall rate simultaneously if one imposes the VMD constraints on the three parameters. We comment on the different fits and their implications for the CP-conserving component of the decay K_L -> pi0 e+ e-.Comment: Version accepted for publication on Phys. Rev.     Two-Loop Ď•4\phi^4-Diagrams from String Theory

    Using the {\em cutting and sewing} procedure we show how to get Feynman diagrams, up to two-loop order, of Φ4\Phi^{4}-theory with an internal SU(N) symmetry group, starting from tachyon amplitudes of the open bosonic string theory. In a properly defined field theory limit, we easily identify the corners of the string moduli space reproducing the correctly normalized field theory amplitudes expressed in the Schwinger parametrization.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure

    Temporin A and Bombinin H2 antimicrobial peptides exhibit selective cytotoxicity to lung cancer cells

    Background. Recently, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been investigated for their use in cancer therapy. They have been reported to selectively target and kill cancer cells whilst leaving normal healthy cells unaffected. Certain Anura AMPs have expressed selective cytotoxicity against tumour cells. Aim. To test the potential of Anura AMPs bombinin H2, bombinin H4, temporin A, and temporin L for use as therapeutic agents for non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Methods. Cytotoxic effects on NSCLC cell lines A549 and Calu-3 and normal epithelial cell line Beas-2B were tested using the CellTox Green Cytotoxicity Assay. Their haemolytic effects on human erythrocytes were also tested for their clinical relevance. Cell membrane profiling, using MALDI-TOF, was performed to ascertain if membrane characteristics of the NSCLC and Beas-2B cell lines may contribute to the AMPs mode of action. Results. Bombinin H4 (100-1.5 ÎĽM, p<0.05) and temporin A (100-50 ÎĽM, p<0.05) showed selective cytotoxicity towards the NSCLC cell lines. Furthermore, they exhibited low levels of haemolytic activity (bombinin H4, 0.061%; temporin A, 0.874%) comparable to untreated cells. Cell membrane profiling showed the phospholipid composition of normal epithelial cell line Beas-2B to be divergent from the cancerous cell lines. However, there was an overlap in the phospholipid profiles of the NSCLC cell lines supporting the hypothesis that the AMPs may have a selective affinity via the membrane composition of cancerous cell lines. Conclusion. These results suggest that bombinin H4 and temporin A show potential for application in lung cancer therapies. Further in vitro and in vivo studies are required to develop a greater understanding of their use as anticancer agents

    L-Idose: an attractive substrate alternative to d-glucose for measuring aldose reductase activity

    Although glucose is one of the most important physio-pathological substrates of aldose reductase, it is not an easy molecule for in vitro investigation into the enzyme. In many cases alternative aldoses have been used for kinetic characterization and inhibition studies. However these molecules do not completely match the structural features of glucose, thus possibly leading to results that are not fully applicable to glucose. We show how aldose reductase is able to act efficiently on L-idose, the C-5 epimer of D-glucose. This is verified using both the bovine lens and the human recombinant enzymes. While the kcat values obtained are essentially identical to those measured for D-glucose, a significant decrease in KM was observed. This can be due to the significantly higher level of the free aldehyde form present in L-idose compared to D-glucose. We believe that L-idose is the best alternative to D-glucose in studies on aldose reductase
