Superlattice platform for chiral superconductivity with tuneable and high Chern numbers
Finding concrete realizations for topologically nontrivial chiral
superconductivity has been a long-standing goal in quantum matter research.
Here we propose a route to a systematic realization of chiral superconductivity
with nonzero Chern numbers. This goal can be achieved in a nanomagnet lattice
deposited on top of a spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG)
with proximity s-wave superconductivity. The proposed structure can be regarded
as a universal platform for chiral superconductivity supporting a large variety
of topological phases. The topological state of the system can be electrically
controlled by, for example, tuning the density of the 2DEG.Comment: 5+6 pages, 4 figure
Topological superconductivity in ferromagnetic atom chains beyond the deep-impurity regime
Recent developments in the search for topological superconductivity have
brought lattices of magnetic adatoms on a superconductor into intense focus. In
this work we will study ferromagnetic chains of adatoms on superconducting
surfaces with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Generalising the deep-impurity
approach employed extensively in previous works to arbitrary subgap energies,
we formulate the theory of the subgap spectrum as a nonlinear matrix eigenvalue
problem. We obtain an essentially analytical description of the subgap
spectrum, allowing an efficient study of the topological properties. Employing
a flat-band Hamiltonian sharing the topological properties of the chain, we
evaluate the -valued winding number and discover five distinct
topological phases. Our results also confirm that the topological band
formation does not require the decoupled Shiba energies to be fine-tuned to the
gap centre. We also study the properties of Majorana bound states in the
system.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figure
Majorana states in helical Shiba chains and ladders
Motivated by recent proposals to realize Majorana bound states in chains and
arrays of magnetic atoms deposited on top of a superconductor, we study the
topological properties of various chain structures, ladders and two-dimensional
arrangements exhibiting magnetic helices. We show that magnetic domain walls
where the chirality of a magnetic helix is inverted support two protected
Majorana states giving rise to a tunneling conductance peak twice the height of
a single Majorana state. The topological properties of coupled chains exhibit
nontrivial behaviour as a function of the number of chains beyond the even-odd
dichotomy expected from the simple nature of coupled Majorana
states. In addition, it is possible that a ladder of two or more coupled chains
exhibit Majorana edge states even when decoupled chains are trivial. We
formulate a general criterion for the number of Majorana edge states in
multichain ladders and discuss some experimental consequences of our findings.Comment: 6 pages, 7 Fig
Millainen vaikutus medialla on matkailumotivaatioon?
The basis of this thesis was writer’s interest towards the impacts that natural disasters have on tourism. Year by year the amount of natural disasters increases. People keep building and creating new infrastructure constantly and the impacts of natural disasters seem to be stronger and stronger. The purpose of this research was to find out what kind of impact natural disasters and media have on travelers’ traveling motivation. This research gives answers to three research questions. Do natural disasters have an impact on tourists’ traveling decisions and traveling motivation? What kind of impact do media have on traveling motivation? How do disasters and their consequences affect tourists’ traveling motivation?
The main goal of this thesis was to clarify what kind of impact natural disasters have on travelers’ traveling decisions and traveling routines. In the research was examined how risky travelers consider tourist destinations which have already been exposed to some kind of disaster and are they willing to travel to these areas in the future. The research was based on material collected from different Internet sources, professional literature, discussions and articles dealing with the topic. Different catastrophes, tourism safety and traveling motivation and the factors influencing traveling motivation, like media, were examined in the thesis.
According to research results of the thesis natural disasters do not have any special affects on Finns’ traveling customs. They are considered dangerous but people do not believe disaster to strike them. However, in the conversations were also travelers who were frightened of disasters because of subjective, relatives’ or friends’ experiences of them and for this reason are going to avoid traveling to disaster areas. The analysis concerning the rhetoric of media shows that media use many different rhetorical ways to convince the readers. These rhetorical ways are also affecting travelers’ traveling decisions. The research shows that media is an important source of information for traverels and that is why media have and effect on Finns’ traveling
Amorphous topological superconductivity in a Shiba glass
Topological states of matter support quantized nondissipative responses and
exotic quantum particles that cannot be accessed in common materials. The
exceptional properties and application potential of topological materials have
triggered a large-scale search for new realizations. Breaking away from the
popular trend focusing almost exclusively on crystalline symmetries, we
introduce the Shiba glass as a platform for amorphous topological quantum
matter. This system consists of an ensemble of randomly distributed magnetic
atoms on a superconducting surface. The collection of magnetic moments gives
rise to subgap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states that form a topological superconducting
phase at critical density despite a complete absence of spatial order.
Experimental signatures of the amorphous topological state can be obtained by
STM measurements probing the topological edge mode. Our discovery demonstrates
the physical feasibility of amorphous topological quantum matter and presents a
concrete route to fabricating new topological systems from nontopological
materials with random dopants.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Support vector machine based classification in condition monitoring of induction motors
Continuous and trouble-free operation of induction motors is an essential part of modern power and production plants. Faults and failures of electrical machinery may cause remarkable economical losses but also highly dangerous situations. In addition to analytical and knowledge-based models, application of data-based models has established a firm position in the induction motor fault diagnostics during the last decade. For example, pattern recognition with Neural Networks (NN) is widely studied.
Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a novel machine learning method introduced in early 90's. It is based on the statistical learning theory presented by V.N. Vapnik, and it has been successfully applied to numerous classification and pattern recognition problems such as text categorization, image recognition and bioinformatics. SVM based classifier is built to minimize the structural misclassification risk, whereas conventional classification techniques often apply minimization of the empirical risk. Therefore, SVM is claimed to lead enhanced generalisation properties. Further, application of SVM results in the global solution for a classification problem. Thirdly, SVM based classification is attractive, because its efficiency does not directly depend on the dimension of classified entities. This property is very useful in fault diagnostics, because the number of fault classification features does not have to be drastically limited. However, SVM has not yet been widely studied in the area of fault diagnostics. Specifically, in the condition monitoring of induction motor, it does not seem to have been considered before this research.
In this thesis, a SVM based classification scheme is designed for different tasks in induction motor fault diagnostics and for partial discharge analysis of insulation condition monitoring. Several variables are compared as fault indicators, and forces on rotor are found to be important in fault detection instead of motor current that is currently widely studied. The measurement of forces is difficult, but easily measurable vibrations are directly related to the forces. Hence, vibration monitoring is considered in more detail as the medium for the motor fault diagnostics.
SVM classifiers are essentially 2-class classifiers. In addition to the induction motor fault diagnostics, the results of this thesis cover various methods for coupling SVMs for carrying out a multi-class classification problem.reviewe
Value of cognitive diversity in science
When should a scientific community be cognitively diverse? This article presents a model for studying how the heterogeneity of learning heuristics used by scientist agents affects the epistemic efficiency of a scientific community. By extending the epistemic landscapes modeling approach introduced by Weisberg and Muldoon, the article casts light on the micro-mechanisms mediating cognitive diversity, coordination, and problem-solving efficiency. The results suggest that social learning and cognitive diversity produce epistemic benefits only when the epistemic community is faced with problems of sufficient difficulty.Peer reviewe
Ilmiöiden jäljillä : Tutkimuksia luokittelusta ja käsitteellisestä muutoksesta yhteiskunta- ja käyttäytymistieteissä
The articles comprising this dissertation concern classification and concept formation in the social and behavioral sciences. In particular, the emphasis in the study is on the philosophical analysis of interdisciplinary settings created by the recent intellectual developments on the interfaces between the social sciences, psychology, and neuroscience. The need for a systematic examination of the problems of conceptual coordination and integration across disciplinary boundaries is illustrated by focusing on phenomena whose satisfactory explanation requires drawing together the theoretical resources from a variety of disciplines.
In philosophy, questions regarding the nature of scientific concepts have often been framed in terms of theories of natural kinds. For this reason, analysis of the notion of natural kind as well as examination of how theories of natural kinds should be connected to recent philosophical accounts of scientific explanation and mechanisms form the core of the study. Building on contemporary discussions on these topics in the philosophy of biology, the philosophy of cognitive science, and the philosophy of the social sciences, the articles develop a mechanistic theory of natural kinds in the social and behavioral sciences, and scrutinize its applicability and usefulness as a theory of conceptual change in interdisciplinary settings. The study suggests that, although the mechanistic theory cannot account for the functioning of the whole range of scientific concepts, interweaving biological, cognitive, and social mechanisms in the manner suggested by the mechanistic theory offers a naturalistic and non-reductionist basis for conceptualizing epistemic coordination across disciplinary boundaries.
Defending behavior in bullying situations
In order to encourage children and adolescents to defend and support their victimized peers, it is
important to identify factors that either maximize or minimize the probability that students will
engage in such behaviors. This thesis is composed of four studies designed to elucidate how
a variety of factors work in conjunction to explain why some children defend their victimized
classmates, whereas others remain passive or reinforce the bully. The conceptual framework of
this thesis is drawn from several theoretical considerations, including social cognitive learning
theory, the expectancy-value framework as well as the literature emphasizing the importance
of empathy in motivating behaviors. Also the child-by-environment perspective and the socialecological
perspective influenced this research. Accordingly, several intra- and interpersonal
characteristics (e.g., social cognitions, empathy, and social status) as well as group-level factors
(e.g., norms) that may either enhance or reduce the probability that students defend their
victimized peers are investigated.
In Studies I and II, the focus is on social cognitions, and special attention is paid to take
into account the domain-specificity of cognition-behavior processes. Self-efficacy for defending
is still an interest of study III, but the role of affective empathy on defending is also investigated.
Also social status variables (preference and perceived popularity) are evaluated as possible
moderators of links between intrapersonal factors and defending. In Study IV, the focus is
expanded further by concentrating on characteristics of children’s proximal environments (i.e.,
classroom). Bullying norms and collective perceptions (i.e., connectedness among the students
and the teachers’ ability to deal with bullying situations) are examined. Data are drawn from
two research projects: the Kaarina Cohort Study (consisting of fourth and eighth graders) and
the randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the effects of the KiVa antibullying program
(consisting of third to fifth graders).
The results of the thesis suggest that defending the victims of bullying is influenced by
a variety of individual level motivational characteristics, such as social cognitions and affective
empathy. Also, both perceived popularity and social preference play a role in defending, and
the findings support the conceptualization that behavior results from the interplay between
the characteristics of an individual child and their social-relational environment. Classroom
context further influences students’ defending behavior. Thus, antibullying efforts targeting
peer bystanders should aim to influence intra- and interpersonal characteristics of children and
adolescents as well as their social environment.Kiusatun oppilaan puolustaminen ja tukeminen
Jotta lapsia ja nuoria voidaan rohkaista tukemaan ja puolustamaan kiusattuja luokkatovereita,
on tiedettävä mitkä tekijät lisäävät tai vähentävät todennäkököisyyttä kiusatun oppilaan
puolustamiseen.
on muodostettu useiden teoreettisten lähtökohtien pohjalta.
Osatutkimuksissa I ja II keskitytään sosiaalisiin kognitiohin. Tutkimuksissa kiinnitetään
erityistä huomiota siihen, että kognitioita mitataan mahdollisimman tarkasti suhteessa tiettyyn
käyttäytymiseen. Osatutkimuksessa III tarkastellaan sosiaalisten kognitioden (tarkemmin
pystyvyysusko) lisäksi empatian roolia kiusatun oppilaan puolustamisessa. Lisäksi tarkastellaan
yhdysvaikutuksia, tarkemmin sitä mahdollistaako oppilaan asema ryhmässä yksilön
sisäisten ominaisuuksien (empatia ja pystyvyysusko) ja käyttäytymisen välisen yhteyden.
Osatutkimuksessa IV kohdistetaan huomio ryhmään ja tutkitaan luokkatason tekijöitä (normit,
jaetut käsitykset). Tutkimusten aineisto perustuu kahteen eri tutkimusprojektiin: Kaarina
vaikuttaa siihen puolustavatko oppilaat kiusattua luokkatoveriaan. Rohkaistaessa lapsia
ja nuoria tukemaan ja puolustamaan kiusattuja oppilaita näihin kaikkiin tekijöihin on syytä
kiinnittää huomiota.Siirretty Doriast
