    s. rodríguez-echeverría, m.a. pérez-fernández, s. vlaar and t. finnan. 2003.Aims: This work analyses the diversity of rhizobia associated with some of the predominant shrubby legumes in central-western Spain. Symbiotic promiscuity and effectiveness were studied using cross-inoculation experiments with shrubby species.Material and Results: Six new bradyrhizobia strains were isolated from nodules collected from wild plants of six leguminous species, Cytisus balansae, C. multiflorus, C. scoparius, C. striatus, Genista hystrix and Retama sphaerocarpa. These isolates were genetically characterized by 16S rDNA partial sequencing and random amplification of polymorphic DNA2013PCR fingerprinting. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that these isolates could represent three new Bradyrhizobium species. Shrubby legumes and bradyrhizobia displayed a high symbiotic promiscuity both for infectivity and effectiveness. Symbioses were effective in more than 70% of the associations established by four of the six plant species. Conclusions: Native woody legumes in western Spain are nodulated by Bradyrhizobium strains. The high degree of symbiotic promiscuity and effectiveness highlights the complex dynamics of these communities in wild ecosystems under a Mediterranean-type climate. Furthermore, the results from this study suggest a potential importance of inoculation for these legume species in soil-restoration projects.Significance and Impact of the Study: This is the first study, to our knowledge, that combines both molecular analysis and pot trials to study the rhizobia2013legume symbiosis for wild legumes

Gender gap in physical education: teachers’ attitudes towards equality

This study follows a survey-type quantitative descriptive methodology in which 526 Spanish PE teachers have taken part. Data were collected using the Likert-type Scale SDG/t (School Doing Gender /teachers), made up of 30 items separated in three subscales. PE teachers mainly showed an adaptive attitude towards gender changes. Nevertheless, differences were observed with regard to the participants' attitude towards gender issues depending on their sex. More specifically, female teachers achieved higher scores than males. This result suggests a better training in gender issues should be carried out in order to raise awareness and update the PE teachers' knowledge, especially in the case of male teachers

Antiangiogenic Therapy in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

    Get PDF
Approximately 75% of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed at advanced stages (FIGO stage III/IV), with 15-23 months median global survival and 20% 5-year survival. Angiogenesis plays an important role in tumour development and proliferation. Increased angiogenesis is associated with worse clinical outcome in ovarian cancer. Here we review the play of bevacizumab in the treatment of ovarian cancer and also other antiangiogenic drugs. In total, to date there are no promising results for most of the reviewed antiangiogenic agents, except those already known for bevacizumab, trebananib, pazopanib, cediranib and nintedanib. Ongoing research will shed more light on this fascinating tumour process and its control

We determined the density and size ranges of individuals of the asteroid Oreaster reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1758) from three populations off the Venezuelan coast. Individuals were collected by hand, visually inspecting 100 m² quadrates in the localities of Caño León (N = 10), Las Luisas (N = 24), and Mochima (N = 5). In the field, each individual was turned upside down, in order to determine the condition of the asteroid's stomach (everted vs retracted), and to describe the substrate to which they were associated. Individuals were preserved and their gut contents were analyzed in the laboratory. Oreaster reticulatus (L., 1758) was found 65 % of the times on silt and in areas with low seagrass densities. At Las Luisas, the density of the asteroid was 0.0075 indiv/ m². However, in Caño León and Mochima, densities were at least one or two orders of magnitude higher, reaching 0.072 indiv/m² and 0.2 indiv/m², respectively. Size ranged between 4 and 9.3 cm at Las Luisas; 7.8 and 12.6 cm at Caño León; and 8.5 and 16.5 cm at Mochima. Of the 55 asteroids studied in Caño León, 63.64 % had the stomach everted on the silty substrate. Of these, 14.28 % were feeding on a colonial tunicate, and 71.34 %, on a filamentous alga. Spines of sea urchins were found in 19.05 % of all the specimens collected in Mochima.

    Get PDF
SummaryBackgroundSeveral studies have shown a growth in the number of visits to accident and emergency (A&E) hospital departments with a high proportion of inappropriate utilization. Methods to identify improper use based on implicit criteria limit the comparisons between hospitals. The aim of this study is to know the proportion of inappropriate attendance's in an A&E department and their associated factors, using a method with objective criteria.MethodsAn instrument based on diagnosis-independent explicit criteria was used to identify inappropriate visits in a random sample of 1845 14-year-old greater patients attended to A&E medical services, and the factors associated with improper demand were analysed.ResultsThe proportion of inappropriate attendance's was of the 26,8% (495/1.845). The unadjusted analysis show that the smaller age, absence of comorbidity, spontaneous visit and some diagnostic groups (diseases of the skin, muscle-skeletal, mental, and bad defined symptoms) were associated to a greater proportion of improper use. Upon adjusting the variables through logistics regression, the age, associated pathology, the spontaneous attendance's and diagnostic groups, maintained the association with improper use, but other variables as woman gender, and night hours were also associated to inappropriate utilization.ConclusionsAt least the fourth part of the attendance's in the A&E medical services do not require urgent attention. Inappropriate utilization is associated to characteristic of the patient and the attended process

Background: COVID-19 became a major public health concern in March 2020. Due to the high rate of hospitalizations for COVID-19 in a short time, health care workers and other involved staff are subjected to a large workload and high emotional distress. Objective: The objective of this study is to develop a digital tool to provide support resources that might prevent and consider acute stress reactions in health care workers and other support staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The contents of the digital platform were created through an evidence-based review and consensus conference. The website was built using the Google Blogger tool. The Android version of the app was developed in the Java and XML languages using Android Studio version 3.6, and the iOS version was developed in the Swift language using Xcode version 11.5. The app was evaluated externally by the Andalusian Agency for Healthcare Quality. Results: We detected the needs and pressing situations of frontline health care workers, and then, we proposed a serial of recommendations and support resources to address them. These resources were redesigned using the feedback received. A website in three different languages (Spanish, English, and Portuguese) and a mobile app were developed with these contents, and the AppSaludable Quality Seal was granted to the app. A specific self-report scale to measure acute stress and additional tools were included to support the health care workforce. This instrument has been used in several Latin American countries and has been adapted considering cultural differences. The resources section of the website was the most visited with 18, 516 out of 68, 913 (26.9%) visits, and the “Self-Report Acute Stress Scale” was the most visited resource with 6468 out of 18, 516 (34.9%) visits. Conclusions: The Be + against COVID platform (website and app) was developed and launched to offer a pool of recommendations and support resources, which were specifically designed to protect the psychological well-being and the work morale of health care workers. This is an original initiative different from the usual psychological assistance hotlines

Today's society is moving forward at a rapid pace, a fact that requires that our educational model change in parallel with such developments. Education is one of the drivers of change and as such must respond to the demands made on it. There is ample literature about the quality of education, but very little of it focuses on assessing the quality of educational spaces as such. The aim of this study is to examine the views and needs of students at the Faculty of Education at the University of Granada with respect to such educational spaces.Departamento de Psicología Socia
