Publisher transparency among, communications and library and information science journals: analysis and recommendations

    Get PDF
The principal goal of the research study is to analyze the transparency of a selection of academic journals based on an analysis model with 20 indicators grouped into 6 parameters. Given the evident interest in and commitment to transparency among quality academic journals and researchers' difficulties in choosing journals that meet a set of criteria, we present indicators that may help researchers choose journals while also helping journals to consider what information from the editorial process to publish, or not, on their websites to attract authors in the highly competitive environment of today's scholarly communication. To test the validity of the indicators, we analyze a small sample: the Spanish Communications and Library and Information Science journals listed in the Scimago Journal Rank. The results confirm that our analysis model is valid and can be extrapolated to other disciplines and journals

Phase-mediated magnon chaos-order transition in cavity optomagnonics

    Get PDF
Magnon as a quantized spin wave has attracted extensive attentions in various fields of physics, such as magnon spintronics, microwave photonics, and cavity quantum electrodynamics. Here, we explore theoretically magnon chaos-order transition in cavity optomagnonics, which is still remains largely unexplored in this emerging field. We find that the evolution of the magnon experiences the transition from order to period-doubling bifurcation and finally enter chaos by adjusting the microwave driving power. Different from the normal chaos, the magnon chaos-order transition proposed here is phase-mediated. Beyond their fundamental scientific significance, our results will contribute to the comprehending of nonlinear phenomena and chaos in optomagnonical system, and may find applications in chaos-based secure communication

3D characterization of a Boston Ivy double-skin green building facade using a LiDAR system

On the way to more sustainable and resilient urban environments, the incorporation of urban green infrastructure (UGI) systems, such as green roofs and vertical greening systems, must be encouraged. Unfortunately, given their variable nature, these nature-based systems are difficult to geometrically characterize, and therefore there is a lack of 3D objects that adequately reflect their geometry and analytical properties to be used in design processes based on Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies. This fact can be a disadvantage, during the building's design phase, of UGIs over traditional grey solutions. Areas of knowledge such as precision agriculture, have developed technologies and methodologies that characterize the geometry of vegetation using point cloud capture. The main aim of this research was to create the 3D characterization of an experimental double-skin green facade, using LiDAR technologies. From the results it could be confirmed that the methodology used was precise and robust, enabling the 3D reconstruction of the green facade's outer envelope. Detailed results were that foliage volume differences in height were linked to plant growth, whereas differences in the horizontal distribution of greenery were related to the influence of the local microclimate and specific plant diseases on the south orientation. From this research, along with complementary previous research, it could be concluded that, generally speaking, with vegetation volumes of 0.2 m3/m2, using Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus Tricuspidata) under Mediterranean climate, reductions in external building surface temperatures of around 13 °C can be obtained and used as analytic parameter in a future 3D-BIM-object.The authors at GREiA research group would like to thank the Catalan Government for the quality accreditation given to their research group (2017 SGR 1537). Establishing a definitive diagnosis of pneumonia using conventional tests is difficult and expensive. Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) are an advantageous point of care (POC) test option, but they have some limitations in terms of detection and quantification. In this work we have developed a lateral flow immunoassay for the ultrasensitive detection of penumolysin employing plasmonic Surface-Enhanced Resonance Raman Scattering (SERRS) tag as labelled probe. The combination of Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles as plasmonic platform and Rhodamine B Isothiocyanate as Raman reporter has allowed us to fabricate a SERRS tag with high efficiency and reliability. The limit of quantification of the SERRS-based LFIA was 1pg/mL, while the limit of detection was 3.6 pg/mL. This could be a strong foundation for a pneumonia diagnosis test based on pneumolysin detectio

Embolization therapy with microspheres for the treatment of liver cancer: State-of-the-art of clinical translation

    Get PDF
Embolization with microspheres is a therapeutic strategy based on the selective occlusion of the blood vessels feeding a tumor. This procedure is intraarterially performed in the clinical setting for the treatment of liver cancer. The practice has evolved over the last decade through the incorporation of drug loading ability, biodegradability and imageability with the subsequent added functionality for the physicians and improved clinical outcomes for the patients. This review highlights the evolution of the embolization systems developed through the analysis of the marketed embolic microspheres for the treatment of malignant hepatocellular carcinoma, namely the most predominant form of liver cancer. Embolic microspheres for the distinct modalities of embolization (i.e., bland embolization, chemoembolization and radioembolization) are here comprehensively compiled with emphasis on material characteristics and their impact on microsphere performance. Moreover, the future application of the embolics under clinical investigation is discussed along with the scientific and regulatory challenges ahead in the field

Long COVID in hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients in a large cohort in Northwest Spain, a prospective cohort study

Survivors to COVID-19 have described long-term symptoms after acute disease. These signs constitute a heterogeneous group named long COVID or persistent COVID. The aim of this study is to describe persisting symptoms 6 months after COVID-19 diagnosis in a prospective cohort in the Northwest Spain. This is a prospective cohort study performed in the COHVID-GS. This cohort includes patients in clinical follow-up in a health area of 569,534 inhabitants after SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 diagnosis. Clinical and epidemiological characteristics were collected during the follow up. A total of 248 patients completed 6 months follow-up, 176 (69.4%) required hospitalization and 29 (10.2%) of them needed critical care. At 6 months, 119 (48.0%) patients described one or more persisting symptoms. The most prevalent were: extra-thoracic symptoms (39.1%), chest symptoms (27%), dyspnoea (20.6%), and fatigue (16.1%). These symptoms were more common in hospitalized patients (52.3% vs. 38.2%) and in women (59.0% vs. 40.5%). The multivariate analysis identified COPD, women gender and tobacco consumption as risk factors for long COVID. Persisting symptoms are common after COVID-19 especially in hospitalized patients compared to outpatients (52.3% vs. 38.2%). Based on these findings, special attention and clinical follow-up after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection should be provided for hospitalized patients with previous lung diseases, tobacco consumption, and women
