    Assessment of potential effects of the electromagnetic fields of mobile phones on hearing

    BACKGROUND: Mobile phones have become indispensable as communication tools; however, to date there is only a limited knowledge about interaction between electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by mobile phones and auditory function. The aim of the study was to assess potential changes in hearing function as a consequence of exposure to low-intensity EMF's produced by mobile phones at frequencies of 900 and 1800 MHz. METHODS: The within-subject study was performed on thirty volunteers (age 18–30 years) with normal hearing to assess possible acute effect of EMF. Participants attended two sessions: genuine and sham exposure of EMF. Hearing threshold levels (HTL) on pure tone audiometry (PTA) and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE's) were recorded before and immediately after 10 min of genuine and/or sham exposure of mobile phone EMF. The administration of genuine or sham exposure was double blind and counterbalanced in order. RESULTS: Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in the mean HTLs of PTA and mean shifts of TEOAE's before and after genuine and/or sham mobile phone EMF 10 min exposure. The data collected showed that average TEOAE levels (averaged across a frequency range) changed less than 2.5 dB between pre- and post-, genuine and sham exposure. The greatest individual change was 10 dB, with a decrease in level from pre- to post- real exposure. CONCLUSION: It could be concluded that a 10-min close exposure of EMFs emitted from a mobile phone had no immediate after-effect on measurements of HTL of PTA and TEOAEs in young human subjects and no measurable hearing deterioration was detected in our study

    International Consensus Statement on Rhinology and Allergy: Rhinosinusitis

    Background: The 5 years since the publication of the first International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Rhinosinusitis (ICAR‐RS) has witnessed foundational progress in our understanding and treatment of rhinologic disease. These advances are reflected within the more than 40 new topics covered within the ICAR‐RS‐2021 as well as updates to the original 140 topics. This executive summary consolidates the evidence‐based findings of the document. Methods: ICAR‐RS presents over 180 topics in the forms of evidence‐based reviews with recommendations (EBRRs), evidence‐based reviews, and literature reviews. The highest grade structured recommendations of the EBRR sections are summarized in this executive summary. Results: ICAR‐RS‐2021 covers 22 topics regarding the medical management of RS, which are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Additionally, 4 topics regarding the surgical management of RS are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Finally, a comprehensive evidence‐based management algorithm is provided. Conclusion: This ICAR‐RS‐2021 executive summary provides a compilation of the evidence‐based recommendations for medical and surgical treatment of the most common forms of RS

    Influence of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions on distortion product otoacoustic emission amplitudes

    Although the influence of the levels and ratios of the primary stimulus on the amplitude of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) has been studied intensely, the influence of the presence of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) has been investigated less thoroughly. The present investigation analysed whether the unilateral presence of 58 SOAEs in 43 normal-hearing adults was related to larger DPOAEs in the ear with SOAEs compared to the contralateral ear having no SOAEs. The study was designed such that the only factor that could influence the amplitude of DPOAEs was the presence of SOAEs. Input/output (IIO) functions were collected in response to primary tones that were presented in 5-dB steps from 70 to 40 dB SPL at the frequency of the unilaterally recorded SOAE of each subject. The primary outcome was the demonstration of statistically significant (P < 0.05) larger DPOAEs in ears exhibiting SOAEs than in ears without measurable SOAEs, except at the highest stimulus level of 70 dB SPL. These results suggest that SOAEs play an additive role in the measurement of DPOAEs. The enhancing effect of the unilateral presence of SOAEs on DPOAEs was statistically significant for 65 dB SPL and lower levels of primary tones. The authors speculate that passive cochlear properties begin to participate in the generation of DPOAEs at primary-stimulus levels greater than 65 dB SPL. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.     Coronally advanced flap adjunct with low intensity laser therapy: A randomized controlled clinical pilot study

    PubMedID: 22092477Aim Coronally advanced flap (CAF) technique and its modifications have been proposed in the literature. Low intensity laser therapy (LILT) is shown to increase wound healing. The aim of this split-mouth randomized controlled pilot study was to assess the effects of LILT with respect to root coverage after CAF procedure for the treatment of multiple-recession type defects (MRTD). Material and Methods Ten patients with symmetrical 74 Miller I and II gingival recessions were included in this study (37 in test, 37 in control group). A diode laser (588 nm) was applied to test sites before and immediately after surgery, and for 5 min. daily 7 days post-operatively. Comparisons of the surgical sites were made with clinical measurements. Results Statistically significant differences were observed between test and control sites in the gingival recession depth (GRD), gingival recession width (GRW) and width of the keratinized tissue (WKT) and clinical attachment level (CAL) measurements after 1 year (p = 0.014, p = 0.015, p = 0.009 and p = 0.018 respectively). The test group presented greater complete root coverage (n = 7, 70%) compared with the control group (n = 3, 30%) after treatment. Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, the results indicated that LILT may improve the predictability of CAF in multiple recessions. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons A/S
