Aim: Chronic disorders have been increasing over the past century, and the relationship with nutrition has been widely discussed. The present study was carried out in order to determine health school students' nutrition styles, health lifestyle behavior, and their interactions. Method: With a cross-sectional design, data from 79 students in the Nursing School were collected via a socio-demographic data collection form, a nutrition form, and and a Health Promotion Life-Style Profile (HPLP) questionnaire. Percentages, McNemar data, Independent-sample t-test and paired-samples t-test were used in data assessment. Results: No significant differences were observed between the number of students with healthy nutrition and mean healthy lifestyle scores, pre and post-training. There was also no influence of presence of a family member with cancer and weight perception. However, there was a significant difference between HPLP scores before the training and six months following training (p=0.049) and the mean healthy lifestyle scores increased. Conclusion: Students with poor nutrition who were trained in cancer prevention and healthy diets, demonstrated increase in their HPLP, yet this did not make a difference to their healthy nutrition behavior

UTILIZATION POSSIBILITIES OF TIMBER WASTES IN LEATHER MANUFACTURING

7th International Conference on Advanced Materials and Systems -- OCT 18-20, 2018 -- Bucharest, ROMANIAWOS: 000464905000094In timber production, only the 24% of trees could be turned into timber and used as an end product, while the rest becomes the waste of forest goods. Although it is known that the wastes of timbers are utilized in different fields such as energy and composites production in general, their use in the leather industry as a tanning material is seemed to be a new concept. For this purpose, the usage possibilities of the timber wastes of red and black pine in the form of sawdust and bark were aimed to investigate for the leather manufacturing. The red and black pine wastes were extracted at Koch extractor at 90 degrees C for 8 h and the tannin contents, influences on the shrinkage temperature, filling properties and final physical characteristics of the leathers such as tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength and color measurements were investigated. The results revealed that the red pine barks (Pious resinosa L.) could be an alternative source of vegetable tannins compared to other timber wastes for the leather industry due to the better extraction yield and tannin content. Besides similar results in terms of tanning properties were obtained with the commonly used vegetable tannins such as valonea and mimosa.Minist Res & Innovat, Natl Res & Dev Inst Textile & Leather, Div Leather & Footwear Res InstEge University Scientific Research Project Department DirectorateEge University [17MUH001]The authors would like to thank the Ege University Scientific Research Project Department Directorate, (Project No: 17MUH001) for financial support and Tezcan Leather (Usak, Turkey) for providing pickled sheep skins

WOS: 000336834500048PubMed ID: 24815475Background: This research evaluated the effectiveness of an online education model in teaching breast self-examination to university staff and students. Materials and Methods: 1,679 women participated in a breast self-examination online training program. Breast self-examination knowledge evaluation forms developed by Maurer (1997) were used in the research and were evaluated on a 100 point scale. Paired t-test and McNemar's Test statistics were employed. Results: The participants scored an average of 46.5 (14.0%) on knowledge on breast self-examination before training, but 77.4 (11.0%) one month after education and 76.7 (9.52%) after six months. There was a clear significant difference between these knowledge levels (p<0.05). Similarly, while the rate for systematic practice of breast self-examination among women was 30.8% before training it increased to 47.8% afterwards. Again the difference was significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: Online education is an effective method for teaching breast self-examination to women

Introduction: In some countries, organ donation is not widespread enough due to medical, cultural, ethical and socioeconomic factors. Living-donor kidney transplant constitutes the main source of kidney donation. Aim: To evaluate the causes of cancellation of living-donor kidney transplant and improve the effectiveness of transplant programs. Methods: Medical records of possible donors and recipients who were evaluated for living-donor kidney transplant at a tertiary medical center between November 2010 and September 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Evaluations were performed on 364 potential donors and 338 living-donor kidney transplant recipients; 207 of the latter (61.24%) underwent living-donor kidney transplant. Immune disorders represented the majority of cancellations (38.84%). Fifty-six donors (15.38%) were rejected mainly due to renal disorders (39%). Conclusion: Timely referral of patients to transplant centers must be guaranteed in order to overcome immune problems. Transplant centers should invest in programs adequate both for their resources and for their patients: paired kidney exchange, desensitization protocols, future research, etc.

We compared the efficacy and safety of low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) in patients with cancer who are at low risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Patients were treated by medical oncologists in Turkey at 15 sites, where they were enrolled and followed up for a period of 12 months. Due to the study design, there was no specific treatment protocol for LMWH. Primary end points were efficacy and the time to change in VTE status. Of the included 250 patients, 239 (95.6%), 176 (70.4%), 130 (52.0%), and 91 (36.4%) completed their day 15, month 3, month 6, and month 12 visits, respectively. Number of patients treated with enoxaparin, bemiparin, and tinzaparin were 133, 112, and 5, respectively. Anticoagulant therapy provoked thrombus resolution in 1.2% and 12.7% of patients using enoxaparin and bemiparin, respectively ( P = .004). Thrombus resolution was observed in 81 more patients at month 3 visit. This ratio was 35 (40.2%) of 87 and 46 (54.1%) of 85 patients administered enoxaparin and bemiparin at the third visit, respectively ( P = .038). Thrombus resolution was observed in 21 more patients during month 6 visit. This ratio was 5 (7.7%) of 65 and 15 (23.4%) of 64 patients administered enoxaparin and bemiparin at the fourth visit, respectively ( P = .022). The LMWH was discontinued in only 2 patients due to gastrointestinal bleeding. This pioneering study shows bemiparin is more effective than enoxaparin in thrombosis resolution and has a similar tolerability profile
