In this paper, we derive several interesting subordination results for certain class of analytic functions defined by the Salagean Operator which was introduced and studied by Oyekan et. Al.[1]

Economic Impact Assessment for Technology: The Case of Improved Soybean Varieties in Southwest Nigeria

    Get PDF
The Study on economic impact assessment for the production of improved soybean varieties in Nigeria was carried out in Nigeria using the agronomic data on yield of the nationally coordinated soybean research from two major zones namely the southwest and the middle belt. The study assesses the economic returns due to improved soybean varieties. Primary data were collected with the use of structured and validated questionnaires. A sample of 288 respondents was drawn from four states namely Oyo, Ogun, Kwara and Niger State at 72 respondents per state.Secondary data were collected from Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, (IAR & T), National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Central Bank of Nigeria CBN and Federal Office of Statistics (FOS).An internal rate of return (IRR) of 38 percent was estimated from the stream of netted real social gains at 1985 constant. The return to investment in soybean production technology is attractive and justifies the investments made on the technologies. The policy implication is that there is underinvestment in soybean production research

Relationship between PPARα activation and NO on proximal tubular Na(+ )transport in the rat

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) regulates renal proximal tubular (PT) Na(+ )handling through modulation of Na(+)-K(+ )ATPase. Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptorα (PPARα), a nuclear transcription factor, is expressed in PTs and has been reported to influence NO generation/activity in renal tissues. This study tested the hypothesis that PPARα interacts with NO and thereby affects renal tubular Na(+ )transport. Urinary excretion of nitrite (UNO(X)V) and Na(+ )(U(Na)V) and PT Na(+ )transport (Na(+)-K(+ )ATPase activity) were determined in rats treated with clofibrate (250 mg/kg i.p) or WY14643 (45 mg/kg; i.p.), a PPARα ligand, 2% NaCl (orally), clofibrate/NaCl, L-NAME, an inhibitor of NO production (100 mg/kg; orally), L-NAME/Clofibrate. RESULTS: Clofibrate or WY14643 increased PPARα expression by 106 ± 7% (p < 0.05) and 113 ± 8% (p < 0.05), respectively. Similarly, clofibrate and WY14643 increased expression of MCAD, a downstream target protein of PPARα by 123 ± 8% (p < 0.05) and 143 ± 8% (p < 0.05), respectively. L-NAME attenuated clofibrate-induced increase in PPARα expression by 27 ± 2% (p < 0.05) but did not affect MCAD expression. UNO(X)V excretion increased 3–4 fold in rats treated with clofibrate, WY14643 or NaCl from 44 ± 7 to 170 ± 15, 144 ± 18 or 132 ± 11 nmol/24 hr, respectively (p < 0.05). Similarly, clofibrate, WY14643 or NaCl elicited a 2–5 fold increase in U(Na)V. L-NAME significantly reduced basal UNO(X)V and U(Na)V and abolished the clofibrate-induced increase. Clofibrate, WY14643, NaCl or clofibrate + NaCl treatment reduced Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity in the PT by 89 ± 23, 62 ± 10, 43 ± 9 and 82 ± 15% (p < 0.05), respectively. On the contrary, L-NAME or ODQ, inhibitor of sGC, abolished the inhibition of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity by clofibrate (p < 0.05). Clofibrate either alone or with NaCl elicited ~2-fold increase in the expression of the α1 subunit of Na(+)-K(+ )ATPase in the PT while L-NAME abolished clofibrate-induced increase in Na(+)-K(+ )ATPase expression. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that PPARα activation, through increased NO generation promotes renal excretion of Na(+ )through reduced Na(+)-K(+ )ATPase activity in the PT probably via post translational modification of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase

Formulating a biblical teaching on sex for Nigerian Christian couples : a study of 1 Corinthians 7:1–5

    Get PDF
The issue of sexual relations between spouses is a major cause of broken homes in Nigeria and Christian couples are not an exception. People believe that a large percentage of broken homes have the root of their problem traced to sex. The preponderance of broken homes (and homes under tension of crises) notwithstanding, most studies in this area have been from the socio-scientific and medical cum psychological point of view and many more have focused on teenagers and young people to the exclusion of married couples that need healing in this regard. This article is aimed at bringing out biblical instruction concerning the issue of sex that could help to restore peace to many homes at the verge of breaking down. The focal passage is 1 Corinthians 7:1–5, which was Paul’s instructions to the Corinthian church when they faced a similar problem. This article is an exegetical analysis of the passage and is read rhetorically (rhetorical analysis examines how a text persuades readers of its point of view) with the Nigerian situation in mind. It concludes that sex must be enjoyed within the ambits of marriage and within this ambit, the only reason for abstinence is mutual agreement for the purpose of prayer. CONTRIBUTION: The article upholds gender equality in initiating and enjoying sex and rejects looking down on women who request sex. It also calls for the eradication of female genital mutilation, a tradition based on making women not enjoy sex.http://www.hts.org.zaNew Testament Studie

Using Therbligs to embed intelligence in workpieces for digital assistive assembly

Current OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) facilities tend to be highly integrated and are often situated on one site. While providing scale of production such centralisation may create barriers to the achievement of fully flexible, adaptable, and reconfigurable factories. The advent of Industry 4.0 opens up opportunities to address these barriers by decentralising information and decision-making in manufacturing systems through CPS (Cyber Physical Systems) use. This research presents a qualitative study that investigates the possibility of distributing information and decision-making logic into ‘smart workpieces’ which can actively participate in assembly operations. To validate the concept, a use-case demonstrator, corresponding to the assembly of a ‘flat-pack’ table, was explored. Assembly parts in the demonstrator, were equipped with computation, networking, and interaction capabilities. Ten participants were invited to evaluate the smart assembly method and compare its results to the traditional assembly method. The results showed that in its current configuration the smart assembly was slower. However, it made the assembly process more flexible, adaptable and reconfigurable

© Springer International Publishing AG 2018. This paper presents a posture assessment tool which utilizes the depth sensing techniques of a 3D imaging sensor for ergonomic risk assessment of seated worker’s postures during controlled manual handling tasks. The tool, which has been developed to utilize the manual handling guidelines by the Health and Safety Regulators of some selected countries to measure and assess the postures of the upper bodies of Operators, is tested to ascertain its effectiveness in assessing seated postures. The tool offers real-time posture assessment with real-time feedback to inform Operators on when to adjust awkward seated postures. An experiment has been performed to record, assess and display the work postures of some seated Operators in real-time with ‘Good’ and ‘Awkward’ postures identified with real-time feedback provided to the Operators. Results show that the tool can assess seated work postures in real-time which helps to reduce the rate of occurrence of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders
