First Measurement of the Branching Fraction of the Decay psi(2S) --> tau tau

The branching fraction of the psi(2S) decay into tau pair has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is Bττ=(2.71±0.43±0.55)×10−3B_{\tau\tau}=(2.71\pm 0.43 \pm 0.55) \times 10^{-3}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e+e- and mu+mu of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance the total width of the psi(2S) is determined to be (252±37)(252 \pm 37) keV.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    The processes ψ(2S)â†’ÎłÏ€+π−\psi(2S)\to \gamma \pi^+ \pi^-, ÎłK+K−\gamma K^+ K^- and Îłppˉ\gamma p \bar{p} have been studied using a sample of 3.7×1063.7 \times 10^6 produced ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays. We determine the total width of the χc0\chi_{c0} to be Γχc0tot=14.3±2.0±3.0\Gamma^{tot}_{\chi_{c0}} = 14.3\pm 2.0\pm 3.0 MeV. We present the first measurement of the branching fraction B(χc0→ppˉ)=(16.3±4.4±5.4)×10−5B(\chi_{c0} \to p \bar{p}) = (16.3 \pm 4.4 \pm 5.4)\times 10^{-5}, where the first error is statistical and the second one systematic. Branching fractions of χc0,2→π+π−\chi_{c0,2} \to \pi^+ \pi^- and K+K−K^+ K^- are also reported.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 3 figures, 2 table

Measurement of the Inclusive Charm Cross Section at 4.03 GeV and 4.14 GeV

The cross section for charmed meson production at s=4.03\sqrt{s} = 4.03 and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 pb−1pb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 pb−1pb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures. Full text link
A sample of 3.95M ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for ψ(2S)→ppˉ\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}, ΛΛˉ\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}, ÎŁ0Σˉ0\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0, Ξ−Ξˉ+\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+, Δ++Δˉ−−\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}, ÎŁ+(1385)Σˉ−(1385)\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385), Ξ0(1530)Ξˉ0(1530)\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530), and Ω−Ωˉ+\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table

We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} recorded at the ΄(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance and 3.9 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the ΄(4S)\Upsilon(4S), is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes J/ψKS0J/\psi K^0_S, ψ(2S)KS0\psi(2S) K^0_S, χc1KS0\chi_{c1} K^0_S, J/ψK∗0J/\psi K^{*0} (K∗0→KS0π0K^{*0}\to K^0_S\pi^0) and J/ψKL0J/\psi K^0_L, or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving D(∗)π/ρ/a1D^{(*)}\pi/\rho/a_1 and J/ψK∗0J/\psi K^{*0} (K∗0→K+π−K^{*0}\to K^+\pi^-). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. The proper time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample finds Δmd=0.516±0.016(stat)±0.010(syst)ps−1\Delta m_d = 0.516\pm 0.016 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.010 {\rm (syst)} {\rm ps}^{-1}. The value of the asymmetry amplitude sin⁥2ÎČ\sin2\beta is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged B0B^0 decays in the CP-eigenstate modes. We find sin⁥2ÎČ=0.59±0.14(stat)±0.05(syst)\sin2\beta=0.59\pm 0.14 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.05 {\rm (syst)}, demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson system. Copyright @ 2002 APS.We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0→D*+D*- and of the CP-odd component of its final state using the BABAR detector. With data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.4  fb-1 collected at the ΄(4S) resonance during 1999–2000, we have reconstructed 38 candidate signal events in the mode B0→D*+D*- with an estimated background of 6.2±0.5 events. From these events, we determine the branching fraction to be B(B0→D*+D*-)=[8.3±1.6(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10-4. The measured CP-odd fraction of the final state is 0.22±0.18(stat)±0.03(syst).This work is supported by DOE and NSF (USA), NSERC (Canada), IHEP (China), CEA and CNRS-IN2P3 (France), BMBF (Germany), INFN (Italy), NFR (Norway), MIST (Russia), and PPARC (United Kingdom). The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps−1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter

This is the pre-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the links below. Copyright @ 2002 APSNew measurements of Ds+ and Ds*+ meson production rates from B decays and from qq̅ continuum events near the ΄(4S) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 fb-1 of data on the ΄(4S) resonance and 2.6 fb-1 off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions B(B⃗Ds+X)=(10.93±0.19±0.58±2.73)% and B(B⃗Ds*+X)=(7.9±0.8±0.7±2.0)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections σ(e+e-→Ds+X)×B(Ds+→φπ+)=7.55±0.20±0.34pb and σ(e+e-→Ds*±X)×B(Ds+→φπ+)=5.8±0.7±0.5pb are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the ΄(4S) mass. The branching fractions ÎŁB(B⃗Ds(*)+D(*))=(5.07±0.14±0.30±1.27)% and ÎŁB(B⃗Ds*+D(*))=(4.1±0.2±0.4±1.0)% are determined from the Ds(*)+ momentum spectra. The mass difference m(Ds+)-m(D+)=98.4±0.1±0.3MeV/c2 is also measured. This work was supported by DOE and NSF (USA), NSERC (Canada), IHEP (China), CEA and CNRS-IN2P3 (France), BMBF (Germany), INFN (Italy), NFR (Norway), MIST (Russia), and PPARC (United Kingdom). Psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi Decay Distributions

Using a sample of 3.8 M psi(2S) events accumulated with the BES detector, the process psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi is studied. The angular distributions are compared with the general decay amplitude analysis of Cahn. We find that the dipion system requires some D-wave, as well as S-wave. On the other hand, the J/psi-(pi pi) relative angular momentum is consistent with being pure S-wave. The decay distributions have been fit to heavy quarkonium models, including the Novikov-Shifman model. This model, which is written in terms of the parameter kappa, predicts that D-wave should be present. We determine kappa = 0.183 +/- 0.002 +/- 0.003 based on the joint dipion mass - cos theta distribution. The fraction of D-wave as a function of the dipion mass is found to decrease with increasing dipion mass, in agreement with the model. We have also fit the Mannel-Yan model, another model that allows D-wave.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figure
