Dimensional Orientation of Calcite Grains in a Flexure Fold

    Get PDF
The direction, the length of the longest dimension of elongated calcite grains, and the normal to it have been measured on each sector in nine columns on ac-profile in a folded calcareous schist layer interbedded in spotted pelitic schist. The results are shown in diagrams (Figs. 2 to 10). From the diagrams, mean directions of the longest dimension and the normal to it have been determined. The pattern of distribution of the directions of the longest dimension and its normal is quite similar to the stress pattern of a buckling beam.今村外治教授退官記念特集

An analysis of concentric diversification strategy on Organization competitiveness: Case of sugar firms in Kenya

    Get PDF
Sugar industry in Kenya has faced a lot of challenges in the recent past. Inefficient production process and stiff competition from low cost producers as well as high cost of sugar production in Kenya are among the main challenges faced by the sector. The sugar firms have resulted into using various diversification strategies in order to build a competitive edge over their rivals and try to overcome these challenges. The paper analyzes the contribution of concentric strategies on sugar firm competitiveness in Kenya. The study adopted descriptive correlational survey design and this being a census study; all the nine main sugar firms in the Kenya were studied. This being a census study, all the sugar firms in Kenya which were registered and licensed by the Kenya Sugar Board as at February 2013, and still in operation at the time of data collection in the year 2013 were studied. Using a questionnaire, primary data was collected from the production and marketing managers as key informants of each of the sugar firms. The production  and marketing managers of every sugar firm were selected to take part in the study as they are perceived to be knowledgeable on the issues under study and for which they are either responsible for their execution or they personally execute them. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to measure the reliability of the scale, which was used to assess the interval consistency among the research instrument items. In order to determine the strength and the direction of the relationship between the study variables, the researcher used simple regression analysis. The regression results reveal that concentric strategies had overall significance impact on competitiveness (p-value = 0.000). The regression results also shows that at individual level, there was a statistically significant positive linear relationship between concentric diversification and firm competitiveness (? = 0.269, p-value 0.001) in that the p-value is less than ? (0.001 < 0.05). The study found out that concentric diversification had positive effect on sugar firms’ competitiveness in that 54.8 percent of the sugar firm competitiveness can be explained by concentric diversification (R square= 0.548). Key Words: Concentric Diversification, Competitiveness, Sugar Firms in Keny

RE-TREATMENT OF MISMANAGED BILATERAL CONDYLAR FRACTURE AND POST-SURGICAL COMPLICATION

    Get PDF
Introduction: Improper management of condyle fractures can lead to changes in the structure of the temporomandibular joint, which can impact the patient's oral function. Corrective surgery is necessary to restore the patient's function and quality of life. This case report aims to discuss the procedure of bilateral condylectomy in neglected condylar fracture, as well as the risks and post-operative complication management. Case: A 26-year-old female patient presented with mandibular hypomobility and occasional temporomandibular pain. The patient had history of a traffic accident around four months ago, and was managed in a public hospital but symptoms persisted. Case Treatment: After thorough examinations, the patient was diagnosed with neglected complete bilateral condylar fracture with displacement and managed via bilateral condylectomy. Post-operative, the patient presented with anterior open-bite and facial paralysis on the right side, and was treated accordingly. During 4-month follow-up, complications and chief complaints had all subsided. Discussions: Mismanagement of condylar fracture could result in malunion of fragments, which is difficult to reposition due to the changes that have already occurred in the temporomandibular structure. Condylectomy is often necessary to relieve symptoms, although bilateral condylectomy poses certain neurological risks. Prompt recognition and intervention of nerve injury is important to prevent permanent complication. Conclusion and Suggestions: Condylectomy could properly treat neglected bilateral condylar fracture in adult patients. Operators must know the associated risk and management of post-operative complications

The characteristics of Lake Tonle Sap in Cambodia based on changes in conductivity

    Get PDF
金沢大学環日本海域環境研究センターエコテクノロジー研究部門Lake Tonle Sap in Cambodia is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, covering an area of about 2,500 km2 in the dry season and 12,500 km2 in the monsoon season. Due to such a unique seasonal change in hydrological phenomena related to the Mekong River system, the lake\u27s water quality must change dramatically. As there is a lack of basic data on the water quality and hydrological phenomena of Lake Tonle Sap, we launched a limnological research survey. This paper deals with the characteristics of the lake based on conductivity changes. Between the monsoon dry seasons, conductivity and water depth in the lake shore changed dramatically. Both were low in the dry season when the water depth was 0.5 m and the conductivity was 40 μS cm-1, and they were both high in the monsoon season, at 8 m and 120 μS cm-1, respectively. However, the conductivity offshore was high at an approximately constant rate throughout the year at around 100 ∼ 120 μS cm-1. This is because the waters that flow back from the Mekong River in the monsoon season remain in the offshore area. Conductivity decreases in the lake shore area in the dry season, which causes a low level of conductivity water to flow in from surrounding regions of the lake. It is the influence of the water flowing back from the Mekong River that increases the conductivity in the lake shore region during the monsoon season

Diacylglycerol Kinase β Knockout Mice Exhibit Attention-Deficit Behavior and an Abnormal Response on Methylphenidate-Induced Hyperactivity

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) is an enzyme that phosphorylates diacylglycerol to produce phosphatidic acid. DGKβ is one of the subtypes of the DGK family and regulates many intracellular signaling pathways in the central nervous system. Previously, we demonstrated that DGKβ knockout (KO) mice showed various dysfunctions of higher brain function, such as cognitive impairment (with lower spine density), hyperactivity, reduced anxiety, and careless behavior. In the present study, we conducted further tests on DGKβ KO mice in order to investigate the function of DGKβ in the central nervous system, especially in the pathophysiology of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: DGKβ KO mice showed attention-deficit behavior in the object-based attention test and it was ameliorated by methylphenidate (MPH, 30 mg/kg, i.p.). In the open field test, DGKβ KO mice displayed a decreased response to the locomotor stimulating effects of MPH (30 mg/kg, i.p.), but showed a similar response to an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, MK-801 (0.3 mg/kg, i.p.), when compared to WT mice. Examination of the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is involved in regulation of locomotor activity, indicated that ERK1/2 activation induced by MPH treatment was defective in the striatum of DGKβ KO mice. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These findings suggest that DGKβ KO mice showed attention-deficit and hyperactive phenotype, similar to ADHD. Furthermore, the hyporesponsiveness of DGKβ KO mice to MPH was due to dysregulation of ERK phosphorylation, and that DGKβ has a pivotal involvement in ERK regulation in the striatum

Polyacrylic acid/Glassy carbon electrode (PAA/GCE) was employed for the determination of lead(II), cadmium(II) and cobalt(II). With differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the following optimal conditions were determined: Deposition potential: -0.8V, Accumulation time: 300seconds, amplitude: 0.06V, pulse period: 0.02seconds, pulse width: 0.01seconds and sampling width: 0.0033seconds and pH 6.0. Under these optimal conditions, linear calibration curves were obtained in a range of 12

Feedstock Recycling of Flame-Resisting Poly(lactic acid)/Aluminum Hydroxide Composite to L,L-lactide

    Get PDF
To achieve the chemical recycling of flame-resisting materials consisting of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), a safer flame-resisting material, PLLA/aluminum hydroxide {Al(OH)3} composite, was investigated the capability of the feedstock recyclability to optically active monomer L,L-lactide. The thermal stabilization of the composite was improved compared to those of as-polymerized PLLA and Al(OH)3 themselves, which makes the melt processing of the composite easier. Nevertheless, at temperatures lower than 300°C the effective depolymerization of PLLA proceeded, without any racemization reaction, to selectively convert into L,L-lactide, with Al(OH)3 acting as a catalyst for the depolymerization. This means that the PLLA/Al(OH)3 composite is capable of reconciling flame resistance with feedstock recycling of PLLA to cyclic monomer
