Lipocortin I (Annexin I) Is Preferentially Localized on the Plasma Membrane in Keratinocytes of Psoriatic Lesional Epidermis as Shown by Immunofluorescence Microscopy
Lopocortin I (LPC-I, also called annexin I) is a 35-kD protein that binds phospholidpids and actin ina a Ca++-dependetn manner. It is also a major substrate for EGF recepto/kinase and rotein kinase C,. and a putative inhibito of phospholipase A2, which produces chemical mediators to cause inflammation. Psoriasos (PS) is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by a rapid turnover of keratinocytes and a defect in keratinization with increased activities of phospholipase C and A2, and EGF receptor. To understand the mechanism of the PS lesion formation and the function of LPC-I, its didtribution was studied in the epiedermis of PS, subacure eczema and normal skin, and in tumor, cells of seborheic keratosis and Bowen's disease. This study involved immunofluorescence and immunoblotting using affinity-purified polyclonal and monclonal antibodies specific to LPC-I and to its Ca++- bound form. In normal, nonlesional PS and subacute eczema epidermis, LPC-I was detected , mainly in the cytoplasm of the suprabasal cells, although it was on the inner aspects of the plasma membrane in some parts of the granular layer. In lesional epidermis of PS it was localized mainly on the inner aspects of the plasma membrane, but not in the cytoplasm of the whole suprabasal cells as the Ca++-bond form, indicating a preferential localization of the plasma membrane. This membrane-binding of LPC-I was also observed in seborrheic keratosis, but not in Bowen's disease. These results suggest that the binding of LPC-I to the plasma membrane occurs actually in living cells, plays a role not necessarily disease specific, in the PS lesion formation, and has some relevance to normal or abnormal differentiation of keratinocytes
Fluid inclusions in an osumilite-bearing granulite from Bunt Island in the Archean Napier Complex, East Antarctica: implications for a decompressional P-T path?
We report high-density CO_2-rich fluid inclusions in garnet, orthopyroxene, and quartz from an osumilite-bearing aluminous granulite from Bunt Island of the Archean Napier Complex,East Antarctica. The melting temperatures of fluids lie in the range of -56.8 to -57.8゜C being close to the triple point for pure CO_2 (-56.6゜C ). Homogenization of the CO_2,-rich fluids into the liquid phase occurs at temperatures in the range of -35.4 to 24.7゜C. This translates into CO_2 densities in the range of 0.788-1.084g/cm^3 .The estimated CO_2 ,isochore for high-density inclusions in garnet intersects the P-T trajectory of Bunt Island at around 10 kbar at 1050゜C, which corresponds to the peak metamorphic conditions of the region derived from mineral phase equilibria. We therefore infer that CO_2 ,was the dominant fluid species present during the ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism in Bunt Island.CO_2 inclusions with lower density occurring in quartz and garnet provide isochores that intersect the P-T path at <7 kbar and <950゜C indicating density reversal of originally high-density inclusions along a decompressional exhumation path of the ultrahigh-temperature rocks in the Bunt Island
Boring bivalve traces in modern reef and deeper-water macroid and rhodolith beds
Macroids and rhodoliths, made by encrusting acervulinid foraminifera and coralline algae, are widely recognized as
bioengineers providing relatively stable microhabitats and increasing biodiversity for other species. Macroid and
rhodolith beds occur in different depositional settings at various localities and bathymetries worldwide. Six case
studies of macroid/rhodolith beds from 0 to 117m water depth in the Pacific Ocean (northern Central Ryukyu
Islands, French Polynesia), eastern Australia (Fraser Island, One Tree Reef, Lizard Island), and the Mediterranean Sea
(southeastern Spain) show that nodules in the beds are perforated by small-sized boring bivalve traces
(Gastrochanolites). On average, boring bivalve shells (gastrochaenids and mytilids) are more slender and smaller than
those living inside shallow-water rocky substrates. In the Pacific, Gastrochaena cuneiformis, Gastrochaena sp., Leiosolenus
malaccanus, L. mucronatus, L. spp., and Lithophaga/Leiosolenus sp., for the first time identified below 20m water depth,
occur as juvenile forms along with rare small-sized adults. In deep-water macroids and rhodoliths the boring bivalves
are larger than the shallower counterparts in which growth of juveniles is probably restrained by higher overturn rates
of host nodules. In general, most boring bivalves are juveniles that grew faster than the acervulinid foraminiferal and
coralline red algal hosts and rarely reached the adult stage. As a consequence of phenotypic plasticity, small-sized
adults with slow growth rates coexist with juveniles. Below wave base macroids and rhodoliths had the highest
amounts of bioerosion, mainly produced by sponges and polychaete worms. These modern observations provide
bases for paleobiological inferences in fossil occurrences.Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT)

Dynamics of the photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition in a nickelate film
The control of materials properties with light is a promising approach
towards the realization of faster and smaller electronic devices. With phases
that can be controlled via strain, pressure, chemical composition or
dimensionality, nickelates are good candidates for the development of a new
generation of high performance and low consumption devices. Here we analyze the
photoinduced dynamics in a single crystalline NdNiO film upon excitation
across the electronic gap. Using time-resolved reflectivity and resonant x-ray
diffraction, we show that the pump pulse induces an insulator-to-metal
transition, accompanied by the melting of the charge order. Finally we compare
our results to similar studies in manganites and show that the same model can
be used to describe the dynamics in nickelates, hinting towards a unified
description of these photoinduced phase transitions.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

The first observed stellar occultations by the irregular satellite Phoebe (Saturn IX) and improved rotational period
peer reviewedWe report six stellar occultations by Phoebe (Saturn IX), an irregular satellite of Saturn, obtained between mid-2017 and mid-2019. The 2017 July 6 event was the first stellar occultation by an irregular satellite ever observed. The occultation chords were compared to a 3D shape model of the satellite obtained from Cassini observations. The rotation period available in the literature led to a sub-observer point at the moment of the observed occultations where the chords could not fit the 3D model. A procedure was developed to identify the correct sub-observer longitude. It allowed us to obtain the rotation period with improved precision compared to the currently known value from literature. We show that the difference between the observed and the predicted sub-observer longitude suggests two possible solutions for the rotation period. By comparing these values with recently observed rotational light curves and single- chord stellar occultations, we can identify the best solution for Phoebe's rotational period as 9.27365 ± 0.00002 h. From the stellar occultations, we also obtained six geocentric astrometric positions in the ICRS as realized by the Gaia DR2 with uncertainties at the 1-mas level
