The Impact of Intelligent Tutoring Software on Geometry Students

    Get PDF
This purpose of this paper is to deepen the understanding for a problem of practice in the mathematics educators’ classroom of low retention of information thus leading to poor mathematics achievement. The identification of the problem of practice led to a development of a research focus examining the effects of using intelligent tutoring software in the mathematics classroom and the impact it has on mathematics achievement, student motivation as it relates to self-efficacy, student engagement and attitudes towards mathematics. Using a convergent mixed methods approach (Creswell, 2012), this paper elaborates on the research questions addressing “What effects does the integration of ALEKS, an artificial intelligence, web-based software program, have on the achievement, self-efficacy, engagement and attitudes towards mathematics of 11th grade geometry students?” Baseline data was collected on the students and a theoretical framework justified the need for the study. A research plan was developed that would collect and analyze data over a period of six weeks that would best answer the research questions. Results showed that ALEKS had a positive impact on student achievement, although the results were not statistically significant. Results also showed that ALEKS positively impacted the self-efficacy and attitudes of students by aiding in their understanding and enjoyment of mathematics. Lastly, an action plan was developed that delineates the next steps in the study. The teacher researcher will share and communicate results of this study and implement action steps that involve further exploration of the impact of ALEKS when used in a high school setting

Current research in multilingualism and education in Lebanon : a report

    Get PDF
In their research report the authors introduce 11 research projects in the area of multilingualism and education currently undertaken in Lebanon. A number of projects tackle the issue of multilingualism and language learning. Empirical studies describe students' perceptions as well as the perspectives of their teachers and discuss consequences for educational practices in schools and universities. The authors present the contributions in three groups: The section on 'Multiculturalism' between yesterday and today' comprises papers dealing various aspects of multicultural aspects of life and communication, whereas the focus of the second group, 'Special cases of multilingualism', is on specific patterns of multilingual communication. The contributions of the last section, 'Multiculturalism and education', discuss a variety of language related issues in multilingual education. The overall aim of the article is to present the studies to a wider public and encourage a more international discussion of these issues which are relevant in many countries around the Mediterranean.peer-reviewe

Objective(s): This study aimed to characterize the co-utilization of non-benzodiazepine sedative ‘Z’-drugs with opioids at ambulatory care visits in the United States. Design: A cross-sectional analysis of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) from 2006 to 2016 was completed. Setting and participants: Ambulatory care visits in the United States involving adult patients with an opioid prescription were included in the analysis. Outcome measures: The primary outcome was initiation or continuation of a Z-drug (zolpidem, eszopiclone, or zaleplon) in a patient visit in conjunction with an opioid medication. Results: The authors analyzed 564,090,296 visits (weighted from a sample of 28,773) with a reported opioid prescription. Co-utilization of opioids with Z-drugs fluctuated during the study period beginning at 4.0% in 2006 (95% CI 2.2%–5.7%), 6.3% in 2012 (3.7%–8.9%), and 4.7% in 2016 (2.8%–6.5%). Among all opioid visits in the study period, co-utilization with a Z-drug was not significantly different among female patients compared with male patients (5.26% vs. 4.63%, P = 0.26). Among visits with concomitant opioid and Z-drugs, 7.0% reported new initiation of both medications in the same visit. Conclusion: At ambulatory care visits between 2006 and 2016, co-utilization of opioids and Z-drugs fluctuated with some differences by sex. Major regulatory advisories and policy changes during this period may have contributed to these varying rates of utilization. Additional work is needed to identify predictors of co-utilization and downstream consequences more widely

Humanitarian law and human rights today

The objectives of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law are inspired by principles of humanity. They are tightly linked and share many common elements. The two bodies of laws complement each other to protect further human beings. A comparative analysis in this regard shows many similarities. However there are still some differences between them: they are two separate laws despite being too close. Many criteria are used to study them in parallel. This study reveals their mutual relations, and the existing legal movement. They are getting closer and shifting from a mere complementarity to a more advanced stage. Are they moving towards a real integration between their norms

Effects of diglossia on classical Arabic: language developments in bilingual learners

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Arabic diglossia on the development of classical Arabic language acquisition amongst bilingual learners in a private school in Lebanon. The study compares the Arabic language (L1) performance to that of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in accordance with Bialystok’s model. One hundred-forty participants; (n=140), ranged from five to eleven years of age, with a mean of eight years were sampled. A two-stage random sampling technique was applied, while ensuring that students with contrastive academic achievement were included within the study. The participants sampled for this correlational research were learners enrolled at a private middle school. Participants were given two standardized measures so as to establish the trend of development in oral skills for both classical and colloquial Arabic, determine the grade level at which convergence occurs between the two forms of acquisition and finally compare the degree of classical Arabic (L1) acquisition with respect to their EFL acquisition. The findings indicated interrelatedness between Arabic diglossia and the late oral development of classical Arabic, whereas participants showed a higher degree of comfort with English than with their mother language. Recommendations for future directions and research are also given
