At the world's edge: Reconstructing diet and geographic origins in medieval Iceland using isotope and trace element analyses
Objectives
A multi‐isotope study was conducted on individuals buried at Skriðuklaustur monastery (AD 1493–1554) to investigate their geographic origins and dietary composition. Comparative material from individuals excavated from Skeljastaðir, an inland farm site was also analyzed.
Materials and methods
Bone collagen was extracted from 50 humans (Skriðuklaustur and Skeljastaðir) and 25 animals (Skriðuklaustur) and analyzed for δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S. Dental enamel samples from 31 individuals (Skriðuklaustur) were also analyzed for 87Sr/86Sr, δ18O, δ13C, and trace elements (Pb, Sr, Zn, Ba).
Results
The mean value determined from individuals from Skriðuklaustur (n = 36) was δ13C = −18.7 ± 0.8‰, δ15N = 12.8 ± 1.1‰, and δ34S = 9.0 ± 1.6‰, whereas at Skeljastaðir (n = 14), it was δ13C = −20.5 ± 0.8‰, δ15N = 7.8 ± 0.9‰, and δ34S = 9.4 ± 1.6‰. At Skriðuklaustur, human dental enamel samples (n = 31) provided a 87Sr/86Sr range of 0.7060–0.7088, δ18Ophosphate from 13.9 to 16.1‰ and δ13Ccarbonate from −16.6 to −12.9‰. Inferred drinking water (δ18Odw) values range from −12.3 to −8.9‰. Sr concentrations range from 25.8 to 156.7 ppm, Ba from 0.11 to 0.81 ppm, Zn from 43.8 to 145.8 ppm, and Pb from 0.13 to 9.40 ppm.
Discussion
A combination of results indicates that the people from Skriðuklaustur were born in Iceland, but some lived inland during childhood while others lived closer to the coast. Since Skriðuklaustur was a hospital, these individuals may have sought medical treatment at the monastery. The δ13C and δ15N values determined from bone collagen indicate that the people residing at Skriðuklaustur consumed a diet high in marine protein, while those residing at Skeljastaðir exhibit values more consistent with terrestrial resources.This research was financed by Fornminjasjóður (the Archaeology Fund), Háskólasjóður Eimskipafélags Íslands (the Eimskip University Fund), and the Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Laboratory (SIBL).Peer Reviewe
Detection of the Natural Alpha Decay of Tungsten
The natural alpha decay of 180W has been unambiguously detected for the first
time. The alpha peak is found in a (gamma,beta and neutron)-free background
spectrum. This has been achieved by the simultaneous measurement of phonon and
light signals with the CRESST cryogenic detectors. A half-life of T1/2 = (1.8
+- 0.2) x 10^18 y and an energy release of Q = (2516.4 +- 1.1 (stat.) +- 1.2
(sys.)) keV have been measured. New limits are also set on the half-lives of

Food-induced Emotional Resonance Improves Emotion Recognition
The effect of food substances on emotional states has been widely investigated, showing, for example, that eating chocolate is able to reduce negative mood. Here, for the first time, we have shown that the consumption of specific food substances is not only able to induce particular emotional states, but more importantly, to facilitate recognition of corresponding emotional facial expressions in others. Participants were asked to perform an emotion recognition task before and after eating either a piece of chocolate or a small amount of fish sauce – which we expected to induce happiness or disgust, respectively. Our results showed that being in a specific emotional state improves recognition of the corresponding emotional facial expression. Indeed, eating chocolate improved recognition of happy faces, while disgusted expressions were more readily recognized after eating fish sauce. In line with the embodied account of emotion understanding, we suggest that people are better at inferring the emotional state of others when their own emotional state resonates with the observed one
From reading numbers to seeing ratios: a benefit of icons for risk comprehension
Promoting a better understanding of statistical data is becoming increasingly important for improving risk comprehension and decision-making. In this regard, previous studies on Bayesian problem solving have shown that iconic representations help infer frequencies in sets and subsets. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which icons enhance performance remain unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the benefit offered by icon arrays lies in a better alignment between presented and requested relationships, which should facilitate the comprehension of the requested ratio beyond the represented quantities. To this end, we analyzed individual risk estimates based on data presented either in standard verbal presentations (percentages and natural frequency formats) or as icon arrays. Compared to the other formats, icons led to estimates that were more accurate, and importantly, promoted the use of equivalent expressions for the requested probability. Furthermore, whereas the accuracy of the estimates based on verbal formats depended on their alignment with the text, all the estimates based on icons were equally accurate. Therefore, these results support the proposal that icons enhance the comprehension of the ratio and its mapping onto the requested probability and point to relational misalignment as potential interference for text-based Bayesian reasoning. The present findings also argue against an intrinsic difficulty with understanding single-event probabilities
The geochemistry of Middle Jurassic dykes associated with the Straumsvola-Tvora alkaline plutons, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica and their association with the Karoo large igneous province
Jurassic dykes of western Dronning Maud Land (Antarctica) form a minor component of the Karoo large igneous province. An extensive local dyke swarm intrudes Neoproterozoic gneisses and Jurassic syenite plutons on the margins of the Jutulstraumen palaeo rift in the Svedrupfjella region. The dykes were intruded in three distinct episodes (~204, ~176 and ~170 Ma). The 204 Ma dykes are overwhelmingly low-Ti, olivine tholeiites including some primitive (picritic) compositions (MgO >12 wt.%; Fe2O3 >12 wt.%; Cr >1000 ppm; Ni >600 ppm). This 204 Ma event precedes the main Karoo volcanic event by ~25 Ma, so any correlations to the wider province are difficult to make. However, it may record the earliest phase of rift activity along the Jutulstraumen. The 176 Ma dyke event is more intimately associated with the two syenite plutons. The dykes are alkaline (basanite/tephrite) and were small-degree melts from an enriched, locally derived source and underwent at least some degree of interaction with a syenitic contaminant. This ~176 Ma dyke event is widespread elsewhere in the Karoo (southern Africa and Dronning Maud Land). Later-stage (170 Ma) felsic (phonolite-comendite) dykes intrude the 176 Ma basanite-tephrite suite and represent the last phase of magmatic activity in the region
Prompting Peers\u27 Use of Choices to Promote Communication in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
© 2019 Anadolu Universitesi. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of prompting a preschool student to use choice making with a peer identified with autism spectrum disorder. The researchers used a single case research design. Researchers provided prompting across three thematic play activities. Results show that there was an initial effect in the first activity, which may have resulted in a carry-over effect in the other two activities. While peer-mediated instruction can be an effective method for increasing the dosage of learning opportunities that children with autism spectrum disorder experience in early childhood settings, peers may need more training or ongoing support to sustain their interactions with the child in a meaningful way
Understanding Visualization by Understanding Individual Users
Visualizations are tools to support thinking. They can be used to externalize knowledge about a complex analytical task or domain, and through interaction, they can embody a reasoning process. As such, visualization cannot be fully understood without also understanding how the user of a visualization thinks. This understanding is nontrivial, and has been complicated by mounting evidence that there is no single type of visualization user. Ultimately, making sense of visualization requires understanding how users vary and why. Past research in visualization theory has focused primarily on how data can be mapped to visual forms and how people perceive them. These research endeavors have led to the identification of fundamental principles regarding how humans perceive colors and visual patterns, and have led to the establishment of general design guidelines for developing useful visualizations.
