Whereas the question of history is one of the most discussed issues in the work of Walter Benjamin, that of the nature occupies a secondary place in the benjaminian critique. However, this essay aims to show that with the reduction of the role of the subject in modernity, there is an increasing importance of a nature which escapes to his control. Rejecting a progressive conciet of history, the historical events seem to obey much more, for Benjamin, to processes known from the natural sciences than to the political projections of a modern society.
Red list and checklist of the lichens
Currently, 315 lichen taxa (310 species, 3 subspecies, 1 variety and 1 forma) are known from Berlin. The Red List contains 112 (35.6 %) of them. 59 taxa are extinct or missing, 47 are endangered and 6 species are extremely rare. Compared to the last Red List (Otte 2005) the categories of 44 taxa have changed. 21 taxa are classified into a lower category of threat, 23 taxa into a higher category
Red list and checklist of the lichenicolous fungi
Currently, 23 species of lichenicolous fungi are known from Berlin. The Red List contains only two extinct or at least possibly extinct species. Nine species (39.1 %) are classified as not threatened. For 12 species (52.2 %) data are not sufficient. Especially the scarcity of historical records makes an assessment difficult
Effect of local chemistry and structure on thermal transport in doped GaAs
Using a first-principles approach, we analyze the impact of \textit{DX}
centers formed by S, Se, and Te dopant atoms on the thermal conductivity of
GaAs. Our results are in good agreement with experiments and unveil the physics
behind the drastically different effect of each kind of defect. We establish a
causal chain linking the electronic structure of the dopants to the thermal
conductivity of the bulk solid, a macroscopic transport coefficient.
Specifically, the presence of lone pairs leads to the formation of structurally
asymmetric \textit{DX} centers that cause resonant scattering of incident
phonons. The effect of such resonances is magnified when they affect the part
of the spectrum most relevant for thermal transport. We show that these
resonances are associated with localized vibrational modes in the perturbed
phonon spectrum. Finally, we illustrate the connection between flat adjacent
minima in the energy landscape and resonant phonon scattering through detailed
analyses of the energy landscape of the defective structures.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Proteomic analysis of Daphnia magna hints at molecular pathways involved in defensive plastic responses
Background: Phenotypic plasticity in defensive traits occurs in many species when facing heterogeneous predator regimes. The waterflea Daphnia is well-known for showing a variety of these so called inducible defences. However, molecular mechanisms underlying this plasticity are poorly understood so far. We performed proteomic analysis on Daphniamagna exposed to chemical cues of the predator Triops cancriformis. D. magna develops an array of morphological changes in the presence of Triops including changes of carapace morphology and cuticle hardening. Results: Using the 2D-DIGE technique, 1500 protein spots could be matched and quantified. We discovered 179 protein spots with altered intensity when comparing Triops exposed animals to a control group, and 69 spots were identified using nano-LC MS/MS. Kairomone exposure increased the intensity of spots containing muscle proteins, cuticle proteins and chitin-modifying enzymes as well as enzymes of carbohydrate and energy metabolism. The yolk precursor protein vitellogenin decreased in abundance in 41 of 43 spots. Conclusion: Identified proteins may be either directly involved in carapace stability or reflect changes in energy demand and allocation costs in animals exposed to predator kairomones. Our results present promising candidate proteins involved in the expression of inducible defences in Daphnia and enable further in depth analysis of this phenomenon
Índices do pensamento mítico em Walter Benjamin
While disputing the supposed overcoming of myth in the modern world and the validity of the mythos-logos dichotomy, this paper suggests an approximation between the categories of mythical thought enumerated by Ernst Cassirer and the work of Walter Benjamin, represented here especially by the author’s youthful writings, which make up his philosophy of language. More precisely, other essays and books of his will be resorted to in order to suggest this thinker’s abundance of material as a profitable field for the study of myth.
Not surgical technique, but etiology, contralateral MRI, prior surgery, and side of surgery determine seizure outcome after pediatric hemispherotomy
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess determinants of seizure outcome following pediatric hemispherotomy in a contemporary cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the seizure outcomes of 457 children who underwent hemispheric surgery in five European epilepsy centers between 2000 and 2016. We identified variables related to seizure outcome through multivariable regression modeling with missing data imputation and optimal group matching, and we further investigated the role of surgical technique by Bayes factor (BF) analysis. RESULTS: One hundred seventy seven children (39%) underwent vertical and 280 children (61%) underwent lateral hemispherotomy. Three hundred forty-four children (75%) achieved seizure freedom at a mean follow-up of 5.1 years (range 1 to 17.1). We identified acquired etiology other than stroke (odds ratio [OR] 4.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-18.0), hemimegalencephaly (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.1-7.3), contralateral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings (OR 5.5, 95% CI 2.7-11.1), prior resective surgery (OR 5.0, 95% CI 1.8-14.0), and left hemispherotomy (OR 2.3, 95% CI 1.3-3.9) as significant determinants of seizure recurrence. We found no evidence of an impact of the hemispherotomy technique on seizure outcome (the BF for a model including the hemispherotomy technique over the null model was 1.1), with comparable overall major complication rates for different approaches. SIGNIFICANCE: Knowledge about the independent determinants of seizure outcome following pediatric hemispherotomy will improve the counseling of patients and families. In contrast to previous reports, we found no statistically relevant difference in seizure-freedom rates between the vertical and horizontal hemispherotomy techniques when accounting for different clinical features between groups
