Polarization qubit phase gate in driven atomic media
We present here an all--optical scheme for the experimental realization of a
quantum phase gate. It is based on the polarization degree of freedom of two
travelling single photon wave-packets and exploits giant Kerr nonlinearities

Fel Oscillators with Tapered Undulators: Inclusion of Harmonic Generation and Pulse Propagation
We review the theory of FEL oscillators operating with tapered undulators. We
consider the case of a uniform tapering and introduce a parameter which
characterizes the effect of the tapering on the gain and on the saturation
intensity. We analyze the effect of the tapering on the FEL dynamics by
including the pulse propagation effects too. We analyze the importance of
tapering as a tool to model the optical pulse shapes and to control the higher
harmonic intensities
The immuneregulator role of neprilysin (NEP) in invertebrates
Neprilysin (NEP) represents an important enzyme in both vertebrates and invertebrates. In the present report we have focused our attention to invertebrates. In particular, a structure related to CD10/NEP as well as its activity in different tissues, such as immunocytes, nervous tissue and muscle of various species were detected. Moreover, the role played by the enzyme in the interactions between host and parasite has also been reported. The findings indicate that NEP immunoregulation is a well-balanced process that, with appropriate physiological and homeostatic responses to challenges, allows the survival and well-being of the species
Polarization phase gate with a tripod atomic system
We analyze the nonlinear optical response of a four-level atomic system
driven into a tripod configuration. The large cross-Kerr nonlinearities that
occurr in such a system are shown to produce nonlinear phase shift of order
. Such a substantial shift may be observed in a cold atomic gas in a
magneto-optical trap where it coupl be fasibly exploited towards the
realization of a polarization quantum phase gate. The experimental feasibility

Deep Saturated Free Electron Laser Oscillators and Frozen Spikes
We analyze the behavior of Free Electron Laser (FEL) oscillators operating in
the deep saturated regime and point out the formation of sub-peaks of the
optical pulse. They are very stable configurations, having a width
corresponding to a coherence length. We speculate on the physical mechanisms
underlying their growth and attempt an identification with FEL mode locked
structures associated with Super Modes. Their impact on the intra-cavity
nonlinear harmonic generation is also discussed along with the possibility of
exploiting them as cavity out-coupler.Comment: 28 page
Cerebral plasticity in acute vestibular deficit
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of acute vestibular deficit on the cerebral cortex and its correlation with clinical signs and symptoms. Eight right-handed patients affected by vestibular neuritis, a purely peripheral vestibular lesion, underwent two brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in 1 month. The first SPECT analysis revealed reduced blood flow in the temporal frontal area of the right hemisphere in seven of eight patients, independent of the right/left location of the lesion. The alteration was present always in the right, non-dominant hemisphere and was reversible in some patients 1 month after the onset, together with attenuation of signs and symptoms. It may be hypothesized that the transient reduction of cortical blood flow and subsequently of cortical activity in the non-dominant hemisphere, also the expression of cerebral plasticity, may serve as a defense mechanism aimed to attenuate the vertigo symptom
Dominant BIN1-related centronuclear myopathy (CNM) revealed by lower limb myalgia and moderate CK elevation
We report a BIN1-related CNM family with unusual clinical phenotype. The proband, a 56-year-old man suffered of lower limbs myalgia since the age of 52. Clinical examination showed short stature, mild symmetric eyelid ptosis without ophthalmoplegia, scapular winging and Achilles tendon retraction. A muscle weakness was not noted. CK levels were up to 350 UI/L. Deltoid muscle biopsy showed nuclear centralization and clustering, deep sarcolemmal invaginations and type 1 fiber hypotrophy. Whole body MRI revealed fatty infiltration of posterior legs compartments, lumbar paraspinal and serratus muscles. Myotonic dystrophy type1 and 2, Pompe disease and MTM1 and DNM2-related CNM were ruled out. By sequencing BIN1, we identified a heterozygous pathogenic mutation [c.107C > A (p.A36E)], and we demonstrate that the mutation strongly impairs the membrane tubulation property of the protein. One affected sister carried the same mutation. Her clinical examination and muscle MRI revealed a similar phenotype. Our findings expand the clinical and genetic spectrum of the autosomal dominant CNM associated with BIN1 mutations
