Gain limits of a Thick GEM in high-purity Ne, Ar and Xe
The dependence of the avalanche charge gain in Thick Gas Electron Multipliers
(THGEM) on the purity of Ne, Ar and Xe filling gases was investigated. The
gain, measured with alpha-particles in standard conditions (atmospheric
pressure, room temperature), was found to considerably drop in gases purified
by non-evaporable getters. On the other hand, small N2 admixtures to noble
gases resulted in high reachable gains. The results are of general relevance in
the operation of gas-avalanche detectors in noble gases, particularly that of
two-phase cryogenic detectors for rare events.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, submitted to JINS
Giant Liquid Argon Observatory for Proton Decay, Neutrino Astrophysics and CP-violation in the Lepton Sector (GLACIER)
GLACIER (Giant Liquid Argon Charge Imaging ExpeRiment) is a large underground
observatory for proton decay search, neutrino astrophysics and CP-violation
studies in the lepton sector. Possible underground sites are studied within the
FP7 LAGUNA project (Europe) and along the JPARC neutrino beam in collaboration

Radiological characterisation in view of nuclear reactor decommissioning: On-site benchmarking exercise of a biological shield
Nearly all decommissioning and dismantling (D&D) projects are steered by the characterisation of the plant being dismantled. This radiological characterisation is a complex process that is updated and modified during the course of the D&D. One of the tools for carrying out this characterisation is the performance of in-situ measurements.
There is a wide variety of equipment and methodologies used to carry out on-site measurements, depending on the environment in which they are to be carried out and also on the specific objectives of the measurements and the financial and personnel resources available. The extent to which measurements carried out with different types of equipment or methodologies providing comparable results can be crucial in view of the D&D strategy development and the decision-making process.
This paper concerns an on-site benchmarking exercise carried out at the activated biological shield of Belgian Reactor 3 (BR3). This activity allows comparison and validation of characterisation methodologies and different equipment used as well as future interpretation of final results in terms of uncertainties and sensitivities. This paper describes the measurements and results from the analysis of this exercise. Other aspects of this exercise will be reported in separate papers. This paper provides an overview of the on-site benchmarking exercise, outlines the participating organisations and the measurement equipment used for total gamma, dose rate and gamma spectrometry measurements and finally, results obtained and their interpretations are discussed for each type of measurement as a function of detector type.
Regarding the dose measurements, results obtained by using a large variety of equipment are very consistent. In view of mapping the inner surface of the biological shield the most appropriate equipment tested might be the organic scintillator, the BGO or even the ionisation chamber. In addition, for mapping this surface, the most appropriate total gamma equipment tested might be the LaBr(Ce), the thick organic scintillator or the BGO. These measurements can only be used as a secondary parameter in a relative way. Results for the gamma spectrometry are very consistent for all the equipment used and the main parameters to be determined
Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse energy and 0, 1, 2, or ≥3 b-quark jets in 7 TeV pp collisions using the variable α T
A search for supersymmetry in final states with jets and missing transverse energy is performed in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=7 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.98 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In this search, a dimensionless kinematic variable, α T, is used as the main discriminator between events with genuine and misreconstructed missing transverse energy. The search is performed in a signal region that is binned in the scalar sum of the transverse energy of jets and the number of jets identified as originating from a bottom quark. No excess of events over the standard model expectation is found. Exclusion limits are set in the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, and also in simplified models, with a special emphasis on compressed spectra and third-generation scenarios
Search for a non-standard-model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of new light bosons in four-muon final states
Results are reported from a search for non-standard-model Higgs boson decays to pairs of new light bosons, each of which decays into the oppositely charged dimuon final state. The new bosons may be produced either promptly or via a decay chain. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Such Higgs boson decays are predicted in several scenarios of new physics, including supersymmetric models with extended Higgs sectors or hidden valleys. Thus, the results of the search are relevant for establishing whether the new particle observed in Higgs boson searches at the LHC has the properties expected for a standard model Higgs boson. No excess of events is observed with respect to the yields expected from standard model processes. A model-independent upper limit of 0.78 +/- 0.05 fb on the product of the cross section times branching fraction times acceptance is obtained. The results are applicable to a broad spectrum of models and are also compared with the predictions of two benchmark scenarios as functions of a Higgs boson mass within the range 86-150 GeV and of a new light boson mass within the range 0.25-3.55 GeV
The ArDM experiment
The aim of the ArDM project is the development and operation of a one ton
double-phase liquid argon detector for direct Dark Matter searches. The
detector measures both the scintillation light and the ionization charge from
ionizing radiation using two independent readout systems. This paper briefly
describes the detector concept and presents preliminary results from the ArDM
R&D program, including a 3 l prototype developed to test the charge readout

Measurement of the production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} =7 TeV
The tt− production cross section (σtt−) is measured in proton-proton collisions at s√=7 TeV in data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1. The measurement is performed in events with two leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state, at least two jets identified as jets originating from b quarks, and the presence of an imbalance in transverse momentum. The measured value of σtt− for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV is 161.9±2.5(stat.)+5.1−5.0(syst.)±3.6(lumi.)pb , consistent with the prediction of the standard model
Measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair production in proton-proton collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV
The difference in angular distributions between top quarks and antiquarks, commonly referred to as the charge asymmetry, is measured in pp collisions at the LHC with the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.09 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Top-quark pairs are selected in the final state with an electron or muon and four or more jets. At least one jet is identified as originating from b-quark hadronization. The charge asymmetry is measured in two variables, one based on the pseudorapidities (η) of the top quarks and the other on their rapidities (y). The results View the MathML source and View the MathML source are consistent within uncertainties with the standard-model predictions
